Chipola’s Literature/Language Winners

Some 66 students from 10 area high schools competed in writing, reading, speech, oral interpretation, literature, humanities, grammar, and Spanish contests at Chipola College on Feb. 3.

The occasion was the 33rd Annual Throssell Literature/Language Festival hosted by Chipola’s Letters Department. The purpose of the festival is to recognize and encourage academic excellence.

Prizes were awarded to first, second and third places, as well as two honorable mentions, in each category. The winner of the President’s Reading Contest received a special medallion as well as a cash award.

Contest winners from participating schools are listed below.

President’s Reading Award—Megan Hill and Madison Walker of Liberty County High School.

Writing: first—Elizabeth Baggett of Marianna High School; second—Jalyn Ingle of Bethlehem High School; third—Emma Baker of Blountstown High School; honorable mentions—Miracle Kersey of Graceville High School and Mikayla Seaborn of Chipley High School.

Speech: first—Hanah Leslie of Malone High School; second—Slade Buckalew of Cottondale High School; third—Macy Jordan of Malone High School; honorable mentions—Jayden Rimel of Liberty County High School and Sadajat Ahmed of Blountstown High School.

Oral Interpretation: first—Sarah Bush of Chipley High School; second—Justin Tate of Bethlehem High School; third—Leah Whitehead of Cottondale High School; honorable mention—Kaitlyn Powley of Bethlehem High School and Hunter Caudwell of Marianna High School.   

Literature: first—Devin Tharp of Cottondale High School; second—Zoe Saunders of Marianna High School; third—Karlee Williams of Malone High School; honorable mentions—Charles Huggins of Graceville High School and Justin Tate of Bethlehem High School.     

Humanities: first—John McClendon of Blountstown High School; second—Wyatt Dawdy of Cottondale High School; third—Tyson Summeraul of Bethlehem High School; honorable mentions—Taylor Holley of Holmes County High School and Case Leavins of Bethlehem High School.

Grammar: first—Lizzie Kern of Liberty County High School; second—Ava Johns of Chipley High School; third—Leah Whitehead of Cottondale High School; honorable mentions—Lael Faust of Malone High School and Jalynn Ingle of Bethlehem High School.

Spanish Language Contest: first—Lia Niero of Malone High School; second—Eladio Ramirez of Graceville High School; third—Lilimey Francisco of Liberty County High School; honorable mentions—Jennifer Francisco-Mendoza of Marianna High School and Rafael Beuitez of Marianna High School.
