Chipola Nursing Students Learn On Patient Simulators
Chipola College’s final semester nursing students participated in an Adult Emergency Simulation Day on March 2.
Nursing students observed paramedic students perform a scenario of a patient with chest pain in the field and the handoff they give to nurses in the emergency room.
Katie Hayes, Patient Simulation Coordinator, said, “The scenario gave nursing students the opportunity to witness what paramedics do in the field and what they include in their reports. This helps establish inter-professional knowledge, teamwork and respect.
The students also practiced preparing medications used in emergency situations, reviewing Basic Life Support, proper ventilations, and case studies of the acute cardiac patient. The highlight of the day was allowing the students in small groups participate in a cardiac arrest scenario using a high-fidelity mannequin. Students performed the roles and actions of a team of healthcare providers working together to resuscitate a patient. The high fidelity mannequin allows for real life application and feedback. For instance, the students observe on a monitor how well they are performing chest compressions by depth, rate, recoil, and hand placement.
Hayes said, “The students find this Simulation Day extremely beneficial in preparing them for their preceptorship and soon to be graduate nurses in the hospital.”
