Chipola Hoops In Action This Week

The Chipola College men’s basketball team will host the Milton Johnson Classic, Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6.

Chipola plays Marion Military Friday, at 7 p.m. Southwest Tennessee State plays Southwest Mississippi at 5 p.m. Friday. Chipola hosts Southwest Tennessee State Saturday, Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. Southwest Mississippi plays Marion Military Saturday, at 1 p.m.

The Lady Indians host Chattahoochee Valley at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 10, before hosting the Chipola Women’s Classic, Nov. 12-13. Chipola plays Seward at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12. Gulf Coast plays Georgia Highlands at 3 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, Nov. 13, Chipola plays Georgia Highlands at 5 p.m. Gulf Coast plays Seward at 3 p.m.

The Indians beat Davidson-Davie 94-69 on Nov. 1, picking up a career night from Shay Davis. He knocked down 8 three-point buckets en route to a 31-point night to lead all scorers. 

The Chipola women opened the 2021-2022 season with a thrashing of Denmark Tech, 120-24, on Nov. 1. The Lady Indians (NJCAA #3; FCSAA #2) jumped out to a 22-1 lead in the first six minutes of the game and never looked back. Three returning members of the defending 2021 FCSAA Champions turned in career nights, led by sophomore Ta'Shonna Wright-Gaskins from Reading, Pennsylvania. Wright-Gaskins led all scorers with 31 points. Jordan McLaughlin registered a triple-double, scoring 25 while dishing out 11 assists and grabbing 10 steals. Shimei Muhammad had 15 for the Lady Indians and just missed a double-double with eight steals.

One night after setting a career high, the Lady Indians Jordan McLaughlin upped that point total to 31 in a 90-44 win over East Georgia State College (0-2). Eleven players scored for the Lady Indians as they moved to 2-0 on the young season.

The Indians begin the season as the No.1 team in the FCSAA State Poll after finishing last season in the final four of the National Tournament. Chipola was 23-5 last year, with a Panhandle Conference title and the FCSAA State Championship. In his second year at Chipola, coach Donnie Tyndall returns three players from the State All-Tournament Team: Lance Erving (6’3), Carlos Lemus (6’3) and Nae’qwan Tomlin (6’10).  

The Lady Indians are ranked second in the FCSAA Poll. They finished in the Final Four of last year’s NJCAA National Basketball Tournament. The team finished with a 20-5 overall record and their seventh FCSAA Championship. The Lady Indians return two players from the State All-Tournament team: Jordan McLaughlin and Shimei Muhammad.

Chipola head coach Greg Franklin begins his tenth season at Chipola. He has won three state championships with two second place finishes and a national title in 2015.
