Chipola's open-door policy guarantees acceptance to any student with a standard
high school diploma or its equivalent. Prospective students should
complete a college application which is available in the Office of Admissions
and Records, or online at
www.chipola.edu. Students also must
provide an official high school and college transcript. Students should visit an
academic advisor in the Student Services building to register.
Chipola has expanded its offerings to include more than 40 individual programs,
including BS, AA, AS, Workforce Certificates and Continuing Education
programs. The college offers eight Bachelor of Science (BS) degree programs,
including: Business Management, Elementary Education, Mathematics Education (5-9
or 6-12), Science Education (5-9 or 6-12), Exceptional Student Education and RN
to BSN in Nursing. The Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) offers Teacher
Certification for those with a B.S. in a non-teaching field.
The majority of Chipola students are enrolled in the Associate in Arts (AA)
Degree program designed for students who plan to complete their first two years
of college work at Chipola and then transfer to a four year program at Chipola

WALDEN HIRED AS CHIPOLA
ACCOUNTING INSTRUCTOR
MARIANNA—Martin Walden, a native of Dothan, Alabama, recently joined the Chipola
College Business and Technology Division as an accounting instructor.
Walden earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Auburn University with a
major in accounting. He also earned a B.S. in Computer Information Systems
and an MBA with an Accounting concentration, both from Troy University.
Early in his career, Walden worked in the area in public accounting and industry
accounting. He spent 10 years in Oklahoma where he earned the CPA certification
which he still maintains.
After returning to Alabama he worked several years as an Assistant Controller,
and Controller of a $300 - $500 million subsidiary of a Marketing and
Distribution company. He also served as Regional Director of accounting for a
Fortune 500 company with a regional sales volume of approximately $5 billion and
annual sales of approximately $20 billion.
After years in the business world Walden says, “I felt a calling to develop
young minds and increase their knowledge of business and accounting.”
Some of his work experience prior to coming to Chipola, includes public
accounting, internal auditing, fraud investigation, management accounting,
systems design and coordination, and instructing accounting courses at Troy
University, Dothan and Fort Rucker campuses.
Walden will be teaching mainly upper level Accounting courses at Chipola. Of
joining the Chipola faculty, Walden says, “I am excited to be here and look
forward to working with the Chipola team and assisting students realize there
academic goals in business and accounting.”

MATH PROF INVITED TO NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION PANEL
MARIANNA—Chipola College associate professor of mathematics Dr. Irma Cruz-White
recently served on a panel to review and discuss proposals submitted to the
National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics (S-STEM) program.
At the panel meeting in Arlington, Virginia, Cruz-White met with a group of
other reviewers who are S-STEM faculty and administrators to discuss the
proposals. The S-STEM Program Team is part of the Division of Undergraduate
Education of the National Science Foundation, and awards grants to institutions
of higher education to support scholarships for academically talented,
financially needy students, enabling them to enter the workforce following
completion of an associate; baccalaureate; or graduate-level degree in science
and engineering disciplines. This provides direct educational opportunities
for Undergraduate Students, and focuses on educational developments for this
group such as curricula development, training or retention.
According to the program sponsors, “The Foundation must make difficult decisions
regarding the support of grant proposals, and the individual advice of
scientists, technicians, engineers, mathematicians, and educators is essential
to our making informed choices.”
Dr.
Cruz-White has been at Chipola College for the past seven years, teaching
mathematics in both the AA program and the B.S. program in Secondary Math
Education. She also directs Chipola Honors students on special projects,
and has been instrumental in the development of the curriculum for the Secondary
Math Education program. The experience of serving on such a prestigious
review panel was a valuable professional activity for Dr. Cruz-White.

BUSINESS MAG INVITES STUDENTS TO ENTER BUSINESS CONTEST
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Business Department invites students to enter 850
Business Magazine's Collegiate Entrepreneur Invitational.
Students are invited to create a business plan to submit to the
contest. Students may enter as individuals or as a team. A team may not consist
of more than four students. All proposals must be original work.
Entries must be postmarked no later than Nov. 29, 2010. Contest details are

Cash awards
will be provided to the top three contenders, to use for education or as seed
money to start their business. First place receives $5,000, with second place
earning $2,000, and third place picking up $1,000.
The first place winner be given the opportunity to pitch their business plan to
a group of local venture capitalists, although there will be no guarantee of
funding. The winner will be featured on the cover of the April/May 2011 issue of
850 – the Business Magazine of Northwest Florida. Top finalists will be
included in the cover story, along with feedback comments from the expert panel.

OPTIMISM SEMINARS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Social and Behavioral Science Division will host a
seminar entitled, “Harnessing Optimism for Success,” Tuesday, Oct. 12.
The seminar will be presented at 8, 9 and 10 a.m., in Z-116 of the Chipola
Literature/Language Building.
Seamus Allman, a counselor with Bay Care Behavioral Health will lead the
seminars which will focus on self-monitoring while staying the course for a

MARIANNA—Charles Lindbergh: The Lone Eagle, the second event in the Chipola
College Artist Series will be presented Nov. 9.
Individual event tickets - $12 for adults

“The Lone Eagle” was just one of many nicknames given
to Lindbergh by the press after he became the first pilot to fly nonstop from
New York to Paris in May of 1927. This one- man play written and portrayed
by Steve Carroll spans Lindbergh’s life as he returns from the grave to set the
record straight about his life. Guests will learn of his early barnstorming
days, the famous flight to Paris, his son’s kidnapping, the unpopular stance he
took against entering WWII, his subsequent heroism as a fighter pilot, and his
final days as a world renowned environmentalist. For information, visit

in Concert will be presented Feb. 7, 2011. Freddy Cole, a

OLYMPIC
SOFTBALL PLAYERS COMING TO CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Area softball players will have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to
work with three team USA Olympic medalists at the Chipola College Softball
field, Jan. 22-23, 2011.
The Triple Threat team of Cat Osterman, Kelly Kretschman and Caitlin Lowe will
provide a weekend of softball instruction focusing on pitching, offense and
defense.
Pitcher Cat Osterman played at the University of Texas. She was an Olympic Gold
Medalist and Silver Medalist, a two-time World Cup Champion and a two-time Pan
American Gold Medalist. Osterman was a three-time USA Collegiate Player of the
Year and a three-time NFCA First-Team All-American. She was the two-time ESPY
Award winner as the Top Collegiate Female Athlete. Cat is the assistant softball
coach at DePaul University in Chicago, and plays professionally for the Rockford
Thunder.
Kelly Kretschman played outfield and infield at the University of Alabama. She
was an Olympic Gold Medalist and Silver Medalist. She also was a Gold medalist
at the Pan American Games and a member of the World Cup Championship team. The
four-time NFCA All-American lives in Southern California and plays for the USSSA
Pride.
Caitlin Lowe played outfield at the University of Arizona. She was an Olympic
Silver Medalist and a Gold medalist at Pan American Games. A member of the
two-time World Cup Championship team, she also was a four-time NFCA First-Team
All-American. Caitlin now resides in Texas where she gives specialized lessons
in out-fielding and slapping.
Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix says, “This is a great opportunity for local
players to learn from some of the best softball players in America.”
The two day Chipola camp will include six hours of instruction each day with
lunch included. Registration fee is $200 by Dec. 18 and $250 after Dec. 18.

SEEKING DONORS FOR FIRST GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Foundation is seeking donations for the First
Generation in College Scholarship for the 2010 Spring Semester. Donations must
be received by Nov. 12 to qualify for state matching funds.
The Florida Legislature created the scholarship program and appropriated funds
for each community college to match dollar for dollar with private
contributions. These new scholarships, which will be funded for the
upcoming Spring 2010 semester if the local matching dollars are raised, will be
awarded to students whose parents did not complete a bachelor’s degree.
Foundation Director Julie Fuqua, says, “Chipola serves many first generation
college students and the potential impact this scholarship program can have on
their lives, as well as their families, is tremendous. Last year
through the generosity of donors and state matching funds, Chipola was able to
award eight students with First Generation scholarships.”
Chipola is eligible to receive up to $8,030 in First Generation in College
Scholarship state matching funds this year. Donations will be matched dollar for
dollar to enable Chipola to award over $16,000 to first generation in college
students during this school year.

COURSE SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold an 8-hour Firearms Familiarization course,
Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Reddoch Firing Range on the Blue
Springs Highway.
Successful completion of the course may be used in applying for a Concealed
Weapons Permit.
Registration and payment of the $100 fee must be completed in advance. Class

DR. J.R. KIRKLAND TO VISIT
CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Dr. J.R. Kirkland, a Chipola College alumnus and founder of a
Washington-based government relations firm, will address the Chipola Honors
Seminar, Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m., in Jackson Hall.
College officials also are planning a reception in Kirkland’s honor to recognize
his contribution of a significant history collection to the college Library. The
reception is set for 2 p.m. in the Library. The public is invited to both
events.
Dr. Kirkland graduated from Chipola in 1960 and was named Chipola’s Alumnus of
the Year in 2000. He said that his successful career owes much to the
teaching he received at Chipola. “I have many fond and strong memories of a
number of faculty and administrators,” Kirkland said.
Dr. Kirkland is founder and President of FBA Inc., a
government relations firm that represents colleges and universities,
associations, foundations and private sector companies in their work with
Congress, the White House and Executive Agencies of the federal government.
In 1990 Kirkland and his brother, David, endowed the Kirkland Award for
Excellence in Teaching at Chipola in honor of their parents Carolyn and the late
Willis Kirkland. The award was the first at Chipola to recognize outstanding
teaching.
Dr. Kirkland has a special interest and expertise in the interrelationship of
federal science policies and programs and the research communities of technology
firms and American universities. During the past 20 years, he has directed
numerous business and academic coalitions that have secured federal funding for
research in advanced computing, neurosciences, nanotechnology and various health
related fields.
Also, Dr. Kirkland has led initiatives in the application of advanced technology
to education and training programs, and has extensive experience in the field of
distance learning and health care delivery to remote areas. He serves on a
number of advisory boards that recommend policies and programs to state and
federal government agencies to promote economic development through cooperative
relationships.
In addition to his business activities, Dr. Kirkland has served in numerous
positions in education and government. The holder of a Ph. D in American
History from the University of North Carolina, he has been a professor at
Cornell University, American University, and Heidelberg University in Germany.
Currently, he is Senior Research Fellow of the IC Squared Institute at the
University of Texas, Austin, and chairs the Graduate Education Advisory Board at
the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has staffed and has
served as advisor to a number of Congressmen and Senators. He served as a
member of the White House Domestic Policy Staff, and was a Director of the 1980
Conference on Small Business.
A resident of the Washington D. C. area since 1965, Dr. Kirkland is married and
has four children. His wife Martha is Executive Director of the American
Occupational Therapy Foundation.

FOULK JOINS CHIPOLA BUSINESS
FACULTY
MARIANNA—Robert M. (Bob) Foulk has joined the Chipola College faculty as
Instructor of Business Management in the Business and Technology Division.
Foulk earned an M.B.A. in Management from Southern Illinois University and a
B.A. in Economics from the University of Delaware. He also completed graduate
work at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He is a member of Beta
Gamma Sigma, the National Honor Society for Business.
Foulk says, “I’ve been a full-time college instructor for
the past 14 years, primarily in North Carolina, teaching the total range of
business courses and also economics. My focus here at Chipola will be the junior
and senior business courses and economics. It is a great privilege to
continue to provide my experience and expertise to this generation of students.”
He served as a Business supervisor with DuPont Company-Engineering Department
and served on a team of Accounting and Procurement personnel who provided
support for major company projects design and construction.
Foulk has a long and distinguished military career. He is a retired Military
officer with 28 years commissioned service. He earned the rank
Navy-Commander with 11 years active duty and nine years in the reserves. He
served eight years in the Delaware Army National Guard achieving the rank of
Lieutenant Colonel.
Foulk is a Vietnam veteran and lived in Japan for four years. He has traveled to
Europe and Far East a number of times.

BRAIN BOWLERS SCORE IN
ATLANTA AND LAKE CITY
MARIANNA—Dallin Kelson, playing as a solo team for Chipola College, finished in
second place at the Early Fall Brain Bowl Tournament held at Georgia Tech on
Oct. 23.
Kelson finished with an 8-2 record, recording wins over the University of
Georgia, Georgia Tech, the University of Alabama A, Florida State University,
Ole Miss, and Wofford. In the playoffs, he beat previously unbeaten Georgia
405-165, FSU 390-135, and Alabama 330-160. Kelson lost a close match to South
Carolina, the eventual winner the tournament with a 9-1 record. South Carolina
has a pre-season rank of number 17 in the nation.
Kelson was the leading scorer averaging over 107 points per game. For results,

Bowl team members were playing in Lake City at the Florida Gateway Classic.
Chipola Blue made it to the semifinals, losing to Central Florida CC on the last
question. Chipola Blue team members are: Brittany Stephens, Annemarie
Nichols, Travis Bontrager, and Harrison Fuqua. Chipola Blue finished the
tournament with an 8-1 record. Annemarie Nichols and Brittany Stephens both
finished in the top 10.
Chipola is the defending FCCAA State Brain Bowl champion. Coaches are Stan Young
and Dr. Robert Dunkle.

“Dearly Departed,” which plays Nov. 4-7 in the Chipola Theater. Show time is 7

Not since “Steel Magnolias,” has a more dysfunctional group of Southern
eccentrics gathered below the Mason-Dixon. When the patriarch of the family
keels over dead, the struggle to get him buried involves the whole clan,
including the not-so-grieving widow who wants to put “Mean and Surly” on the
tombstone. The play contains some adult humor.

LINDBERGH SHOW COMING TO CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Charles Lindbergh: The Lone Eagle, the second event in the Chipola
College Artist Series, will be presented Nov. 9.
Individual event tickets - $12 for adults
and $8 for ages 18 and under –go on sale Oct. 26 in the Chipola Business Office.
“The Lone Eagle” was just one of many nicknames given
to Lindbergh by the press after he became the first pilot to fly nonstop from
New York to Paris in May of 1927.
This one- man play written and portrayed by Steve Carroll spans Lindbergh’s life
as he returns from the grave to set the record straight about his life. Guests
will learn of his early barnstorming days, the famous flight to Paris, his son’s
kidnapping, the unpopular stance he took against entering WWII, his subsequent
heroism as a fighter pilot, and his final days as a world renowned

Conservation Biology students hike the Garden of Eden Trail
MARIANNA—Twenty-one students from the Conservation Biology classes at Chipola
College recently hiked the Garden of Eden Trail at the Apalachicola Bluffs and
Ravines Preserve outside of Bristol.
The 6,294 acre preserve is owned and managed by the Florida Chapter of The
Nature Conservancy. Dr. David Hilton, Chipola professor and Conservation
Biology instructor, guided the students on the 3.75 mile trail beginning in a
sandhill habitat with wiregrass and longleaf pines and eventually arriving at
the Alum Bluff overlook, 135 feet above the Apalachicola River.
The trail borders amphitheater-shaped steepheads, formed from below-ground
erosion, and descends into two ravines – lush slope forests with small seepage
streams leading to the river. The slope forest is home to two very rare
needle-leaved trees – the Florida torreya (Torreya taxifolia) and the
Florida yew (Taxus floridana).
In 1971 a local resident, E. E. Calloway, published his theory that this was
once the home of Adam and Eve. Calloway saw the rare trees, the crystal-clear
streams and the amazing view from the top of the bluff and determined that this
was indeed Heaven on Earth. The Garden of Eden Trail is located 1.6 miles
off of Highway 20 on State Road 12.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN THE
ARTS SET FOR NOV. 7
MARIANNA—“Some of the most
unique and creative works of art ever shown in Jackson County are on exhibit at
the 6th Annual Sunday Afternoon with the Arts at the Chipola Arts
Center on Nov. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m.,” according to the exhibit chairperson, Debra
Pelc Menacof.
With nearly 65 artists from
as far away as Arizona, Dothan, Panama City and Tallahassee, the exhibit has
captured the interest of professional and amateur artists from across the
country. Some of the artists with work in the show are college students,
and others work as professional artists. More than 150 pieces of work are on
display.
This year’s exhibit features
more three-dimensional art than previous years including sculpture and pottery.
Ceramic stoneware depicting African wildlife hand thrown by Joshua “Ben” King, a
graduate of Sneads High, is included in the exhibit. King and his family worked
in South Africa as missionaries for ten years where he became known as the
“Pilgrim Potter.” He traveled with his potter’s wheel into villages, schools,
and open markets and used his pottery creations to communicate the Gospel. King
will be on hand during the Artists Reception to demonstrating his ceramic
techniques.
Other artists with three
dimensional works in the show include Claude Reese, Maurice Fox, Debra Pelc
Menacof, Robert Paradis, Dawn Prietz and Joel Scilley.
Literature and visual art
are combined in several displays as the written word is presented by author
Darlene V. Earhart. Co-authors, Judy D. Brooten and Rachel M. Christopher are
exhibiting their newly published book, The History of the First Presbyterian
Church, Marianna, Florida 1835 -2010, in a shadowbox featuring historic
photographs of the church.
One of the most creative
literary presentations is by watercolor artist, L. Steven Spak and author,
Margena B. Myrick. Spak illustrated Myrick’s book filled with wonderful lessons
learned growing up. Their display chronicles the path from sketch, to painting
to a published, illustrated book.
In addition to these literary displays, author/historian Dale Cox will be on hand to discuss his numerous books about the area

stretch throughout the art center this year, as many artists chose to paint
bigger, bolder, and brighter. Brilliant florals, whimsical creatures and
intriguing contemporary designs delight the eye through the exhibit.
Thought-provoking sketches
and drawings challenge the intellect while handsome drawings in charcoal and pen
and ink capture scenes along the Chipola River or depict favorite places
in the Panhandle, such as Sam Carnley’s pen and ink drawing of Two Egg, Florida
and Marian Oswald’s watercolor of the old store in Two Egg.
The variety of art coupled
with the chance to watch artists demonstrating their techniques make this annual
event an excellent outing for the entire family. Some artists will lead
hands-on painting opportunities such as Karen Roland of Chipley who will invite
visitors to join her in painting a huge mural.
Sam Carnley will lead a
hands-on experience in drawing with pen and ink. Michele Tabor Kimbrough of
Marianna will show how to apply watercolor to a newly created pen and ink
drawing. Nancy Zurenda will demonstrate needle felting. Jerry Whitson will
be painting outdoors in plein air. Dawn Prietz will be outdoors at her potter’s
wheel. Roberta Newell will lead an oil and water resistance painting opportunity
as well.
Anita Pizza, internationally
renowned pianist, who now lives in Marianna, will play during the event.
Volunteers from through out
the community work behind the scenes to make this annual event a reality.
Members of the Chipola Regional Arts Association and The Artists Guild of
Northwest Florida, Inc., will be at the reception to greet visitors and answer
questions along with many exhibiting artists.
“Joan Stadsklev, the
Director of the Fine and Performing Arts Department at Chipola College is a
driving force behind this event. Without her support, and that of the college,
Sunday Afternoon with the Arts would not be possible,” added Menacof.
The Artists Reception at
Chipola Arts Center is a free event on Nov. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. In addition to
refreshments and live music, visitors will have the opportunity to win a variety
of door prizes including the grand prize of a beautiful piece of framed art
donated by John Brewer Studios.
The exhibit can be viewed
Monday through Friday during regular college hours from Nov. 1 to 12.

FSU PROFESSOR’S ART ON
DISPLAY AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Original works by Anne Stagg, Director of the BFA Studio Art Program at
Florida State University, are on display in the Gallery of the McLendon Fine
Arts Building on the campus of Chipola College.
Of her exhibit entitled, “Methods of Escape,” Stagg says, “We all need a means
of escape from the daily grind. Be it a fantasy, a trip to the river, a
mid-summer storm, a hobby, or the comfort of home, these escapes provide balance
and refuge from our daily stressors.”
Stagg admits the series of drawings began in the midst of a creative dry spell.
“My work was in transition and one day I looked around and realized that I had
put away all of the projects I had begun, she said. “All around me white, blank
canvases and stacks of paper returned my gaze and I felt a little daunted by the
thought of making the first mark and beginning the process of making again. On
impulse, I picked up a ruler and a tech pen. I put one line on the first sheet,
two on the second, three on the third and so on. These marks were not contrived,
they were just marks and I knew that I could be ruining a stack of paper or
freeing myself to begin making again,” she said.
Stagg says she didn't set out to make anything specific, just thinking about
escape. “I found myself reaching for watercolors. I was interested in the
dripping, slightly transparent immediacy of the material. In the end, I hope the
drawings in the Methods of Escape series are playful voids where the
viewer may find their own escape from the day-to-day,” Stagg said.
