CHIPOLA WINS STATE SOFTBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP
The Chipola Lady Indians captured the 2010 FCCAA State and Region VIII
Championship with a 14-0 win over Miami-Dade on May 2.
Chipola, which beat State College of Florida for the second time in two days by
the final 13-8 to capture the FCCAA Gulf District Championship and is ranked
third in the country, will now advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in St.
George, Utah.
From an outstanding pitching performance all day from Brittany Black, Emma
Stevenson, and Skylar Davis, the Lady Indians were finally able to connect with
the bats in the final day; 20 hits in game one versus State College of Florida
and 18 against FCCAA Atlanta District Champion, Miami-Dade.
“I am extremely proud of our team and how we have fought all year long through
adversity,” said Coach Belinda Hendrix. “At the beginning of the season,
nobody thought we would compete for the conference title and make a run at the
state title.”
“To now have the
opportunity to compete in the National Tournament in Utah, it says a great deal
about the character and the heart of our team.”
Chipola’s road to victory in the state tournament was paved with victories
against South Florida (4-2), St. Petersburg (4-3), State College of Florida (7-4
& 13-8), and Miami-Dade (14-0).
In the Miami-Dade game, Chipola was led by Andrea Sullivan, who had three hits,
three runs, five RBIs, two walks, and two homeruns in three at bats.
Sullivan was named NJCAA Region VIII Tournament Most Valuable Player and batted
.667 for the tournament, 10 for 16.
Joining Sullivan in the hit parade was teammates Kellie Todd, four hits and four
RBIs; Michelle Hewett, three hits and two runs; Dana Cauthen, three hits and
three runs.
Pitcher Emma
Stevenson pitched a complete game shutout by allowing only six runs, one walk,
and four strikeouts on 100 pitches.
In her sixth season at the helm of the Lady Indians program, coach Belinda
Hendrix had 10 players on the Panhandle All-Conference team, including catcher
Kellie Todd, Conference Player of the Year, and Emma Stevenson, Conference
Pitcher of the Year.
The Lady Indians won the Panhandle Conference championship this year, and in
2008 and 2007. Chipola finished fifth in the 2009 State Tournament. The team
captured the state and national championships in 2007.

Graduation exercises are scheduled for Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m., in the Milton
Johnson Health Center.
State Rep. Marti Coley will
deliver the commencement address.
Coley is a native of Blountstown who graduated
from Chipola in
1981. Parents, relatives and
friends are invited to a reception immediately following the ceremony.
Five students will receive
President’s Medallions for earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average in all of
their coursework at Chipola.
Associate in Arts degree
graduates Tiffany Newsome, Marshall Hilton, Allison Ellis and Benjamin Griffin
earned a 4.0 for two years of work. Bachelor of Science degree graduate Daniel
Lee earned a 4.0 for four years of work.

REGISTRATION FOR
CHIPOLA SUMMER CLASSES IS MONDAY
MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold summer registration for new and returning
students, Monday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Summer I classes begin May
11. Late registration continues through noon on May 12.
Summer II classes begin June
28. Many evening and distance learning courses are available during the two
six-week summer sessions. Some classes have been extended to run for 12 weeks
rather than 6.
Online registration also is
available for students who qualify.
Fees for early registration
must be paid on the day of registration. Scholarship recipients should contact
the Business Office to declare fee payment method. Students from Georgia and
Alabama pay in-state tuition.
Graduating high school seniors who take at least one class during summer term I
may register early for Fall 2010 classes.
Application deadline for Summer Session II is June 3. Registration is June 24
and classes begin June 28. Application deadline for the Fall Semester is
Aug. 5. New students who have been cleared for admission for the Fall Term by
June 30 may register for Fall 2010 classes July 12-15. New students who register
in July will be required to attend orientation classes July 19, 20, 21, 22, and
26. Day and evening orientation classes will be offered.

Chipola offers the Associate
in Arts Degree, the Associate in Science Degree, Workforce Development programs.

WESTER ELECTED CHIPOLA SGA PREZ
MARIANNA—Madison Wester of Grand Ridge was elected president of the Chipola
College Student Government Association during the recent Spring elections.
Aja Finklea of Chipley was elected sophomore class president. Monica Guilford of
Blountstown was chosen Chief Justice.
The following students were elected sophomore senators: Mary Beth Alderman,
Chipley, Kristen Garney of Chipley, Ashleigh Lollie of Sneads, Dustin Miller of
Marianna, Olivia Mosier of Cottondale, Bhagyashri Patel of Chipley, Tiffany Stoe

All students enrolled at Chipola are members of the SGA and may, through their

programs of the college. SGA has jurisdiction over all student clubs and
organizations and facilitates understanding between the student body and the
faculty and administration of the college.

BEGINS STATE TOURNEY
MARIANNA— The Chipola Indians will make their sixth consecutive appearance in
the FCCAA State Baseball Tournament, May 6-10, at Tigertown Stadium in Lakeland.
Chipola faces Palm Beach in the opening round of the tournament, Thursday, May
6, at 10 a.m. (EST). A win will put the Indians in the 4 p.m. game on Friday. A
loss would move the Indians to the 10 a.m. game on Friday.

Eight teams have qualified for the FCCAA/NJCAA Gulf District Baseball
Tournament, including: Chipola (Panhandle Runner-up), Gulf Coast (Panhandle
Champion), Miami Dade (Southern Runner-up), Palm Beach (Southern Champion), St.
Johns River (Mid-Florida Runner-up), St. Petersburg (Suncoast Runner-up), Santa
Fe (Mid-Florida Champion) and State College of Florida (Suncoast Champion).
The Indians finished second in the Panhandle Conference race to Gulf Coast.
Chipola is ranked seventh in the FCCAA Poll.
The double-elimination tournament continues May 7-10, with the championship game
set for Monday, May 10, at 10 a.m. (EST).
Five Chipola College Indians have been named to the All-Panhandle Conference
team. Eric Sauls (OF), Blake Newalu (INF) and Austin Wright (LHP) were named
First Team All Conference.
LeVon Washington (OF) and CJ Reifenhauser (LHP) were named second team All
Conference.
Sauls, Wright and Newalu also were named among Top 10 Players from Panhandle
Conference.

Chipola Financial Aid
Night is tuesday, may 11
MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold a Financial Aid Evening Workshop on Tuesday,
May 11, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Financial Aid Office, in the Student
Services Building.
The workshop is scheduled to give those individuals who can’t leave work during
the day an opportunity to seek assistance with their financial aid paperwork.
Efforts will focus on new students enrolling at Chipola and helping students and
parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Applicants need to bring copies of the parent and applicant’s 2009 tax forms,
W-2 forms, and other un-taxable 2009 income documentation such as child support
received and paid out. Other helpful items to bring include driver’s license and
social security card for student and parent. Staff members will provide each
person with individualized assistance.
Dr. Jayne Roberts, Dean of Enrollment Services, says, “This event is designed to
help students with their college finances for Fall 2010 so they will be ready to
learn instead of being preoccupied with how to cover college costs.”

LAKELAND— The Chipola Indians lost to Palm Beach 16-10 in the opening round of

BASEBALL TEAM WINS IN DAY TWO STATE TOURNEY
LAKELAND— The Chipola Indians got back on track with a 3-2 win over St. Johns
River Community College on day two of the FCCAA State Baseball Tournament, May
7, at Tigertown Stadium in Lakeland.
The Indians scored three runs on seven hits and committed no errors. St. Johns
had two runs on seven hits with two errors. Marianna’s own Tyler Wilson was two
for three and scored a run.
Chipola will play either St. Pete or
Miami Dade at 4 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, May 8.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will host the annual
High School Baseball Showcase, Saturday, May 15, at the Chipola field.
The event is open to all
high school juniors or seniors who are current members of a varsity baseball
team.
Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson
says, “This is a great opportunity for players to showcase their skills and to
gain national exposure while being evaluated by JUCO and Division I coaches, as
well as professional scouts.” Johnson says he is expecting from 50 to 100
pro and college scouts to attend.
Check-in opens at 8 a.m. on
May 15. The event will continue rain or shine with indoor facilities available.
Skill evaluation for running, hitting and fielding begins at 9 a.m. Skill
evaluation for pitching and catching begins at 12:30 p.m. Players should wear
baseball pants and bring their own bats, spikes, gloves, hats, protective cups
etc.
Registration deadline is
Friday, May 7. Participants must provide proof of insurance and sign a waiver of
liability. Cost is $85.

INDIANS ELIMINATED FROM STATE BASEBALL TOURNEY - SAULS NAMED ALL-STATE
LAKELAND—The Chipola Indians finished the season with a 7-5 loss to Miami Dade
in the semi-final round of the FCCAA State Tournament, May 8.
Miami scored 7 runs on 9 hits with no errors and left 5 on base. Chipola scored
5 runs on 8 hits with two errors and 8 men left on base.
Cody Martin was 2 for 3 for Chipola. Tyler Wilson was 2 for 2.
The Indians finished second in the Panhandle Conference to Gulf Coast which was
also eliminated from the state tournament. Chipola chalked up a 13-11 conference
mark with an overall 27-25 record.
Chipola outfielder
Eric Sauls was named to the FCCAA
All-State First Team. Sauls finished the year with a .347 batting average with
66 hits, including 17 homeruns and 20 doubles.
Chipola outlasted St. Johns River 3-2 in the second round of the tournament.
Indian pitcher Rodney Quintero logged a 135-pitch performance allowing only
seven hits while striking out ten in eight innings of work.
Throughout the first four innings, each team had collected only one hit.
However, the aggressiveness of the Indians came to life when Marianna native,
Tyler Wilson, plated Cody Martin, who doubled earlier in the inning, on a
single.
Making minor adjustments to St. Johns River's left-hander pitcher Nick
Dellatorre's set-up, the Chipola base runners were able to board the
merry-go-round and steal bases at will. Wilson would steal second base and

before scoring on a Josh Allen single.
The aggressive play, combined with commendable defense, enabled the Chipola
Indians to withstand a late rally by St. Johns River in the top of the ninth. In
relieve for Quintero, Duncan Midkiff gave up one run before getting Jesse
Piccolo to fly out to center field with a runner at third.
The lightning strikes were not the only thing popping heard around Tigertown in
Lakeland as Chipola (26-26) battled Palm Beach (36-13) in the opening round of
the state tournament. The Indians were not able to keep pace with Palm Beach as
the Indians lost 16-10 and were forced to battle their way back through the
losers' bracket.
Eric Sauls' three-run home run, his second home run of the game, capped a
five-run seventh inning for the Chipola and gave them a 10-8 lead. However, a
53-minute rain delayed occurred after the final out and the Indians were not
able to continue their momentum after the delay.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Palm Beach pounced with their own
three-run home run and then the Panther's next batter hit a solo home run.
Indian pitcher Johnny Cristi was unable to cover first base as Alex Bello for
Palm Beach beat Chipola's Evan Stermer to the bag. An ensuing throwing error put
runners on second and third. Coach Johnson. "Today we didn't throw enough
strikes and made too many mistakes; that's been the story of our year.”

SUMMER CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola
College will offer programs for children of all ages this summer.
Swimming lessons
will be offered for ages four and up. Lessons are based on a combination of
nationally-recognized methods.
The following sessions are
scheduled: Session 1: June 7-17, registration deadline is June 1; Session 2:
June 21-July 1, registration deadline is June 14; Session 3: July 12-22,
registration deadline is July 6; and Session 4: Aug. 2-12, registration deadline
is July 26. Classes are available at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. or 7 p.m. Sessions are
Monday through Thursday for two weeks of 45-minute lessons. Cost is $45 and
pre-registration is required, with a $5 late registration fee.
An Adult Swimming class
is scheduled for July 26 – July 29 with classes available at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

LATE EDD AND
ELIZABETH HILL HONORED AT CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Friends and family of the late Edd and Elizabeth Hill of Grand Ridge
gathered at Chipola College on May 13 to recognize the Hill’s gift to Chipola
College.
In 1991, the Hill’s only son Glen was killed in an auto accident. Glen had
recently graduated from Chipola and was a student at FSU, a member of the
Marching Chiefs, a talented musician, an Eagle Scout and active in his church.
Edd Hill’s brother Gilford, said, “Glen was just an all around good kid who
loved life, but most of all, loved his mother, dad and family.”
The establishment of the “Glen Hill Memorial” scholarship was the result of the
decision to turn their own personal tragedy into a lasting, positive gift for
the benefit of other Grand Ridge students and also a means to give lasting honor
to their beloved son. Several students have already graduated from Chipola as a
result of this scholarship.
Prior to their deaths, Edd and Elizabeth decided to continue their gift through
the establishment of an additional scholarship in their name. The sale of
their home and property has already meant $475,000 to the Chipola Foundation.
An additional $100,000 to $125,000 is expected when the estate is finally
settled.
Half of the Hill’s estate will go to the Glen Hill Memorial Scholarship. The
other half will be used to establish the Ed and Elizabeth Hill Memorial
Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a Jackson County student
who has financial need. The award can be used for tuition and books as long as
the student maintains a 2.5 GPA.
Gilford said, “Just think about what this will mean for future students. This is
a gift which will just keep on giving for generations to come. What a
great day this is indeed for the students of Grand Ridge.”
The Hills had a passion for education and realized its importance for a
meaningful life. Elizabeth was a school teacher for almost 40 years and
never lost her love for her students. The Hills were active in their
church and community and took great pleasure in seeing kids from Grand Ridge
excel in all areas.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, said, “The Hills loved Chipola, and we are
honored that they chose to leave a lasting legacy to the college that will
support current and future generations of deserving students.”

HARRISON BUILDING
DEDICATED AT CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Chipola College on May 17 marked the completion of “The Chapel at
Chipola” donated by the family of Mr. and Mrs. Creshull Harrison, Sr.
Kolmetz Construction was the contractor and Donofro and Associates was the
architect for the 2,100 square foot building. The space is equipped with a large
video screen and meeting room with stained glass window. The building will be
used by students for spiritual meetings and gatherings.
Dave Barkalow, Associate Pastor of the First United Church of Marianna,
officially dedicated the building. Dr. Shannon Eads of the First Baptist Church
of Marianna pledged both churches’ support for Chipola students. Curt McGinnis,
Chipola Baptist Campus Ministry adviser, also spoke.
Creshull Harrison, Sr., is a retired businessman and was the original owner of
Harrison Chevrolet which is now Rahal-Miller Chevrolet. The Harrisons are
long-time members in the First Methodist Church of Marianna. At the dedication,
Harrison said, “We were just the conduit for God. It was only a seed that God
planted in my mind that developed into this.”
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough said, “Chipola is an institution of higher
learning where students develop their minds. The Harrisons believe that it’s
also important that our students develop character and faith. Through their
generosity, students will have a place gather to reflect on the important things
in life and to develop relationships that will last long after they have left
Chipola.”

end-of-year luncheon.
Presentation roasts were the order of the day. Harry Fleener honored Bob Brown,
Custodian, for his 26 years of service. Dr. Joan Miller highlighted the
career of Student Disability Services Advisor, Gayle Duncan for 19 years of
service. Dr. Rose Cavin honored June Mays, Professor of Biological Science
and Chemistry, for 28 years of service. Dr. Jayne Roberts highlighted the
careers of Dr. Joan Miller, Dean of Student Services, for 27 years of service
and Lisa Shores, Department Associate of Enrollment Services, for 18 years of
service. Bud Riviere honored Janet Wise, Senior Office Assistant of
Continuing Education, for 36 years of service.
Chipola
president Dr. Gene Prough presented resolutions from the college board of
trustees citing each retiree’s accomplishments. All six were presented Chipola
Gold Cards which provide lifetime admission to college events, and all were
awarded lifetime memberships in the Florida Association of Community Colleges
(FACC).
The event was sponsored by FACC, Council of Chipola Educators (CCE), Chipola
Faculty Association (CFA) and Career Employees Association (CEA).

Softball Tournament at the Canyons Sports Complex in St. George, Utah.

Applications for Admission

final high school transcript to be sent to Chipola as part of the application
process. Students must also take the College Placement Test unless otherwise
qualified by ACT or SAT scores.

MARIANNA—Business professor
Lee Shook was recently named Chipola College Faculty member of the year and was
chosen by his peers as the recipient of the 2010
Kirkland Award for Excellence in Teaching at Chipola College.
Since 1993 Shook has taught
business courses at Chipola. He teaches both AA and BS level courses,
including accounting, intermediate accounting, tax and general business. He was
also instrumental in developing new courses in the start-up of Chipola’s
Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.
In addition to teaching, Shook is a coordinator for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance program. He also trains Chipola students to prepare and file
tax returns at no charge to local residents. With the help of these
student volunteers, Shook and his students filed 320 tax returns this year
alone. Over the last five years, they have filed more than 1,000 returns.
Shook helped establish the
Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) by serving on the ACE Faculty Advisory
Committee. He also participated in the pilot of the First-Year Learning
Experience (FYLE) component of the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)
serving as a mentor for 30 students. His fellow mentor Geraldine DeFelix said,
“Lee was remarkable in how he related to students. He also met weekly with other
mentors during the pilot.”
Shook earned a B.S. from
University of Virginia and an M.P.A from University of Southern Mississippi.
Chipola president Dr. Gene
Prough said, “Lee Shook is a valuable member of the Chipola family. He is
involved in all aspects of the college from academics to fine arts and
athletics. He is very deserving of both of these awards.”
The Chipola College Faculty
Member of the year award includes reserved parking for a year, a $1,000 bonus,
and a $100 gift certificate from the College Book
Store.
The Kirkland Award was
established by brothers—J. R. Kirkland and David Kirkland—in honor of their
parents Carolyn and the late Willis Kirkland of Marianna. The award provides
$1,000 to the annual recipient.
Shook is a long time
supporter of the Chipola Theatre. He has appeared in numerous productions
and is a key supporter of the Chipola (ACT) Applauding
Chipola Theater fund. In 2005, Shook established a scholarship for
Chipola Theatre Majors. He plans to continue his contributions by donating
the $1,000 from the Kirkland Award to the Chipola Theatre.

CHIPOLA THEATER STUDENTS
VISIT THE BIG APPLE
NEW YORK CITY— Chipola College theatre students recently visited New York City
on five-day theatre extravaganza.
Students attended five Broadway and Off-Broadway show including Tony winners
“Billy Elliot,” “Ave. Q,” and saw Nathan Lane and Bebe Neworth in the new smash
hit musical “The Addams Family.”
Students attend a masters acting class taught by a Broadway professional.
Chipola Theater director Charles Sirmon says "Our acting coach said it was one
of his best classes and such a talented and energetic group."
Chipola students also visited NBC Studios where some were chosen to appear on
“The Jimmy Fallon” show as back up singers. Students also visited Time Square,
St. Patrick's Cathedral and Central Park. Sirmon makes the annual trip with
students every other year.

Brenton Jones Back Aven Pitts, Ben Grande, Dianna Glaze, Kristina Lopez, D.R.
Forrester and Austin Pitts.

MARIANNA MIDDLE
STUDENTS STUDY GROUNDWATER AT CAVERNS
MARIANNA—More than 200 Marianna Middle School seventh graders recently visited
the Florida Caverns State Park to study groundwater and native plants and
animals.
Seventh grade teacher Kenny Hamilton and his students were invited to take part
in the field trip sponsored by the Chipola Groundwater Outreach project.
MMS Principal, Dr. Gayle Westbrook, saw the health and environmental value for
seventh graders, and asked if all could participate. As a result, students
and 12 teachers from science, english, math, history and ESE classes attended.
They were: Kenny Hamilton, Tanya Gardner, Rochelle Summerwell, Glenda
Crawford, Kevin Domen, Ellen Eller, Resa Hunter, Nichole Kleiser, Nicole
Mooneyham, Larissa Robinson, Amanda Stripling and Megan Wilson.
Chris Hawthorne, Caverns Park Manager, said that this was one of the largest
field trips and with an environmental agenda. Students participated in an
interpretive program on park fauna led by Deanna Wickham and Bethany Wagner.
Students observed oak snakes, scarlet king snakes, ring neck snakes, earth
snakes and box turtles.
Park Rangers Frank Strickland, Scott Jacob, Dustin Calevro, Cristina Holley,
Natalie Johnson and Billy Bailey led the students on cave tours.
Students hiked the one mile Beech Magnolia Trail to find flora and land
topographical features. Students were given ground water bottles and
information about protecting natural resources. Kelly Banta, Park
Education Specialist, designed the tour with special emphasis on the Nature
Trail Learning Stations.
MMS science teacher Kenny Hamilton, said, “The great weather was an asset and
the park was simply beautiful. The students enjoyed being in the great outdoors
while soaking up firsthand knowledge of caves, sinkholes, aquifers, bluffs,
ground water, wetlands, flora, fauna, and karst topography. The field trip
was a great connection with nature and will hopefully raise our students’
environmental awareness.”
The Chipola Groundwater Outreach Program is funded by the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection.

CHIPOLA TO OFFER SMALL
BUSINESS SEMINARS
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer four small business seminars.
The seminars are listed
below: “Minimizing Income Taxes While Limiting Record Keeping”, will meet June
21 from 9 a.m. to noon; “Steps to Starting a Small Business,” will meet June 21
from 1 to 4 p.m.; “Turning Passions Into Profits” will meet July 19 from 9:00
a.m. to noon; “Steps to Starting a Small Business” will meet July 19 from 1 to 4
p.m.
Seminars will meet in the Chipola College Business Building (M108).
The small business development seminars are a collaborative effort among Chipola
College, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the Small Business Development
Council, and the Jackson County Development Council.

CHIPOLA FINISHES FIFTH IN
SOFTBALL NATIONALS
ST. GEORGE, Utah—The Chipola Lady Indians finished fifth in the NJCAA National
Softball Tournament on May 21.
Chipola mounted a late rally before falling to Seminole State College, 9-6, in
an elimination game. Chipola entered the tournament as the No. 3 team in the
NJCAA. Seminole broke open
a scoreless game with a pair of runs in the fifth off a two-run homer. Seminole
added three more in the sixth to make it 5-0.
Chipola broke into the scoring column with a single run in the sixth, but
Seminole answered with another run in the seventh in taking a 6-1 lead.
Chipola mounted a rally in the seventh, scoring twice to cut the lead to 6-3.
With two outs, Seminole Pitcher Kaci Quintero induced what was thought to be the
game-ending groundout off the bat of Ariell Van Hook. However, the Chipola
coaching staff protested the play, contesting that the Seminole player who
fielded the ball had not properly checked back into the lineup.
The protest was upheld and Van Hook returned to the plate. Two pitches
later, she drove in Chipola's third run of the frame on a single to cut the lead
to 6-4. Indian infielder Trish Bliss tied the score at 6-6 with a towering
two-run blast to left field to force extra innings.
The score stayed tied until the ninth when Seminole erupted for three runs
making the final score 9-6.
Van Hook finished 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI to lead the Indians.
Chipola starting pitcher Emma Stevenson, who reentered the game in the ninth,
suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on 13 hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Chipola lost a 16-7 battle to in-state rival Miami-Dade in the semi-finals of
the national tournament on May 21. The game was a rematch of the state
championship which Chipola won 14-0 on May 2.
Miami pounded out five home runs as part
of a 23-hit attack as the Sharks slugged their way past Chipola.
Both team combined for 15 runs and 15 hits in the final two innings. Leading 6-2
in the sixth, Miami seemed to be on its way to a run-rule victory as the Sharks
scored five runs in the frame, highlighted by two homeruns en route to an 11-2
advantage.
Chipola answered with five runs in the sixth, bolstered by a grand slam off the
bat of Trish Bliss, which pulled Chipola back to a four-run deficit at 11-7. But
Miami erupted for five more runs in the seventh, making the final 16-7.
Bliss finished with four RBI’s to pace the Indians' offensive effort. Chipola
starter Brittany Black was touched up for four runs in eight hits in 1.2 innings
of work to take the loss.
Timely hits led the Chipola Lady Indians to defeat Chattanooga 10-4 on the
opening day of the tournament. In the top of the first, Trish Bliss connected
with a two-run homerun to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead.
Chattanooga took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Indians’ bats
came to life in the top of the sixth when Brittany Black doubled to center field
and stole third base before Hannah Lovestrand was hit by a pitch. Selentia
Pittman hit a three run shot to put the Lady Indians up 6-3.
In the top of the seventh, Chipola’s Ariell Van Hook punched a straight line
drive over the left center field fence to give Chipola an 8-4 lead.
Chipola pitcher Emma Stevenson earned the win. She allowed eight hits and three
walks, striking out six in a complete game.
Chipola beat Georgia Perimeter 7-4 in the opening-round of the tournament on May
20. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind the bats of Nikki
Roddy who homered to put the Indians up 2-0 in the bottom of the first
inning. Van Hook extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo homer.
Georgia Perimeter struck back in the second scoring on a single and a two-run
homerun to tie the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Roddy doubled to score Hewett and increase the
Chipola lead to 6-4. Van Hook was then walked and third baseman Trish
Bliss was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brittany Black hit a high
flying pop-up that was mishandled by the entire Georgia Perimeter infield.
Roddy scored from third making the final score, 7-4.
Chipola was led by Michelle Hewett, who was 3-4 with one RBI. Nikki Roddy was 2
for 2 with 3 RBIs and a homerun. Van Hook was 2-2 with a homerun and an RBI.
The Lady Indians finished the season as the Panhandle Conference Champions and
the FCCAA State Champions with a record of 49-13.
