title.
Dallin Kelson played solo as Chipola A and finished the tournament as the top
individual scorer as well. This is the first time a player has won the national
championship competing as a solo team. Kelson averaged 374 points per game, the
highest scoring average ever for a community college team and he broke the
individual scoring record by 20 points per game.
Chipola B consisted of: Paul Kelson, Harrison Fuqua, Ashley Adams, Zach Gilmore
and Nick Ratzlaff. Paul Kelson finished the tournament as the second overall
individual scorer behind his brother Dallin.

four-year college and university teams in the nation. Only six community college
teams in the country were invited to the DII championship.
Chipola Brain Bowl coach Stan Young said, “We are very proud of the work that
our players have done to reach this goal. Coach Dr. Robert Dunkle and I thank
the college and community for their continued support.”
In the three years preceding this one, Chipola teams have placed

CHIPOLA
PRESENTS AT HUMAN PATIENT SIMULATION CONFERENCE
TAMPA—Students
and faculty from the Chipola College Health Science program attended the Human
Patient Simulation Network (HPSN) Conference in Tampa, Feb. 21-24.
Chipola College Associate Degree in Nursing Program presented two sessions at
the conference. Through an interactive, scenario-based simulation exercise, the
group shared the benefits of utilizing advanced semester students to mentor
fundamental nursing students. The mentoring idea was born from a
suggestion by Chipola student nurse, Michelle Daniels, during her first semester
in the program.
The
work of nursing scholar Patricia Benner is utilized in the novice-to-expert
framework. The benefits of student mentoring include: leadership, improved
communication, and self-efficacy in clinical skills for advanced students.
Fundamentals students benefit from peer-oriented learning which is less
anxiety-producing and promotes cohesion among other students in the program.
Vickie Stephens, Chipola Health Science director, says, “The new simulation
mentoring program has been a win-win for all students in the nursing program.”
Chipola students and faculty were honored at a luncheon at the conference.
The group also attended other innovative learning sessions during the week.
Chipola was represented by nursing students: Michelle Daniels, Jessica
Tillman, Lyndsey Wainwright, and Keith Watford. Chipola faculty and staff
supporting the students were: Amy Sampson, Patient Simulation Coordinator;
Dr. Karen Lipford, Professor, and Vickie Stephens, Health Sciences Director.
More than 1,100 health science students and professionals from 35 countries
attended the international conference. Seven colleges/universities
attended with 31 students presenting in the plenary sessions.

MANHATTAN PIANO
TRIO TO PERFORM MARCH 17 AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA— The Manhattan Piano Trio, the final event in the Chipola College
Artist Series, is set for March 17 in the college theater.
Individual event tickets - $12 for adults and $8 for ages 18 and under –are on
sale in the Chipola Business Office.
The Manhattan Piano Trio
has been hailed by critics as “a grand departure from the usual.” The trio
has become one of the most creative, exciting, and dynamic young ensembles in
the country. The Trio uses piano, violin and cello as their individual
instruments of expression and listeners will experience the passion, joy, and
harmony in their playing of Classical, Romantic and Contemporary music.
With more than 300 concerts
in its first five seasons alone, MPT is one of the most active groups in the
classical music scene, welcomed by enthusiastic audiences in over 30 states,
Australia and South Africa, and in venues such as Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall,
and the Ravinia Festival.
This season, MPT embarked on
another set of exciting tours at home and overseas, returning to North Carolina
Wesleyan College, Virginia Wesleyan College, Hobart and William Smith College,
East Georgia College, and the Gualala Arts Center, as well as making debuts at
Music in Corrales, Chipola College, and the Associazione Filarmonica di Rovereto
in Italy.
The Trio recently celebrated
the release of its third album, a disc of Schumann and Chopin trios for the
Marquis Classics label, in honor of the composers’ bicentennials.
Since its formation, MPT has
carved out a unique niche for itself by performing concerts in a much wider
range of settings – from major concert halls around the country to venues in
smaller towns.
The Manhattan Piano Trio is
an ensemble that embodies, in the deepest sense, the borough that provides its
namesake. These three musicians represent starkly different backgrounds, and yet
connect on a fundamental level to enjoy making music together. Wayne Lee,
violinist, is originally from San Francisco; the group’s cellist, Dmitry Kouzov,
grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia; and Milana Strezeva, pianist, is a native of
Kishinev, Moldova and a naturalized American. Dmitry and Milana are founding
members of the group; Wayne, who joined in 2008, is the most recent addition to
the ensemble.
In addition to their
rigorous concert schedule, the members of MPT are soloists and recitalists who
have performed internationally. They are also devoted teachers; Milana and Wayne
maintain private studios in New York and Miami, and Dmitry is professor of cello
at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The performers all completed
graduate degrees at the Juilliard School, and the group still enjoys an active
presence in Manhattan. Visit

RONNIE MYERS
INDUCTED INTO FCCAA COACHES HALL OF FAME
MARIANNA—Former Chipola College basketball player Ronnie Myers was inducted into
the FCCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Hall-of-Fame on March 4, 2011, exactly 50
years after he played in the state tournament in 1961.
Myers was a player on Chipola’s 1961 team which hosted and won the first Florida
Junior College State Basketball Tournament. Myers also was instrumental in
bringing the state tournament back to Chipola in 1996 where it has been played
ever since.
Myers played for one year under the late Chipola coach Jim Pavy and under the
late Hall of Fame coach Milton Johnson. As a guard for the Indians, Myers’
lightning quickness was legendary, leading his Chipola teams to a state
championship in 1961 and a tournament appearance in 1962. Myers also
played for Johnson at Campbellton High School during Johnson’s incredible
winning streak of over 50 games, a Florida record.
Myers joins his former
Chipola coaches Johnson and Pavy who were inducted into the Hall of Fame in the
early 1990’s. The late Austin “Red” Robbins, another Chipola alumnus who
went on to play professional basketball in the ABA, is also in the Hall of Fame.
After graduating from
Chipola, Myers went on to play for LaGrange College in Georgia, where he earned
a degree in business. After a brief stint in high school coaching, he returned
to Marianna, to manage a successful tire and automotive retail business.
In 1966, he married the former Kitty Neel, who went on to become a Chipola math
professor and eventually a Chipola vice-president. The Myers have two daughters
and three grandchildren.
During his business career, Ronnie had the opportunity to help his old coach
Milton Johnson in raising money for his alma mater through the college’s booster
organization, the Chipola Appreciation Club. He has served the club in various
capacities as president and board member for more than 40 years during which
time the club has raised more than $1 million in support of Chipola athletics.
The Myers family regularly opens their home for special events to support the
college’s athletic programs. In 2008, more than 100 of the late coach Milton
Johnson’s former players and cheerleaders gathered there for a reunion. The home
is also the site of annual booster club meetings and ticket sales drives.
Myers was an officer when the Appreciation Club won the bid to host the
FCCAA/Region VIII Men’s Basketball Tournament at Chipola in 1996. He was among
the first to sign on to help direct the operations of the tournament. Chipola
was awarded the combined men’s and women’s tournament in 1997 where it has been
played ever since. Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough says, “As tournament
administrator, Ronnie is the first to welcome coaches, officials and recruiters
who visit the Milton H. Johnson Health Center for the tournament. He understands
the special camaraderie of coaches and athletes, and works hard to ensure that
the tournament at Chipola is among the best in the nation.”
Myers is an avid sports fan who follows all facets of JUCO and Division 1
basketball. He knows basketball from many angles, as a player, coach,
contributor, and as a leader in Florida Community College athletics.
Chipola Athletic Director
Dr. Dale O’Daniel, says, “As a successful businessman, Ronnie has been a
constant financial supporter of JUCO basketball and Chipola in particular.
As an active member of the Appreciation Club, he has been a strong part of the
athletic successes of the college.”
Former FCCAA Director Charles Smith, said, “Ronnie’s ability to relate to the
state coaches, athletes, athletics directors and administrators has been
phenomenal. He is responsible for getting the communities to participate and
make the tournament the ‘best’ tournament in the nation.”
