MARIANNA—Chipola
Junior College’s athletic programs achieved much success during the 2001-2002
school year.
The
CJC baseball team set the curve for Chipola’s four athletic programs
with a Runner-up finish in the FCCAA / NJCAA Region VIII tournament, a 46-10
record, and a second Panhandle Conference Championship in as many years. The Indians were ranked as high as third in the country for
much of the season. Head coach Jeff Johnson was named Panhandle Conference
Coach-of-the-Year for the second year in a row.
Several
baseballers were among the best in the state and nation. Blake Balkcom was named
to the NJCAA All District Team. Three
Indians were named to the FCCAA All Tournament Team: Balkcom, Ivan Naccarata and
Kyle Pawelcyzk.
Three
CJC players made the FCCAA All State squad: Balkcom, Ricardo Nanita and
Naccarata.
The
All Panhandle Conference team listed eight CJC players: Balkcom, Nanita,
Naccarata, Pawelcyzk, Russell Martin, Victor Alvarez, Troy Fry and Scott Wearne.
Russell
Martin was named to the Academic All Conference team and the state FCCAA All
Academic Team.
Chipola’s
men’s basketball
team had a very successful season with an 18-12 record. All Panhandle Conference
picks from Chipola include: Kareem Johnson, John Andrews and Brandon Freeman.
Michael Wilds was named to the Panhandle Conference All Freshman Team.
Brandon
Freeman and David Hilton were named to the Panhandle Academic All Conference
team.
The
Lady Indians softball squad finished the year with a 26-18 record. All
Panhandle Conference picks included: Neikole Royster, Jill Foye, Virginia
Spencer and Stephanie Gray.
Elisha Scott and Virginia Spencer were
named to both the FCCAA All Academic Team and the Academic All Conference team.
The
Lady Indians basketball team finished the season with 14-16 record.
Rebecca
Montz was named to the All Panhandle Conference Team. Amber Bryant and Lanita
Carter made the Panhandle Conference All Freshman Team. D'Leisha Cockerham and
Rebecca Montz were named to both the FCCAA All Academic Team and to the Academic
All Conference Team. Clouttia Young also made the Academic All Conference Team.

MARIANNA—Several
players from the Chipola Junior College baseball team that finished second in
the state tournament were picked in the Major League draft on June 6.
Sophomore
pitcher Kyle Pawelczyk of Elkins,
West Virginia, was drafted in the 3rd round by the Anaheim Angels. The
left-hander amassed a 6-1 record during his sophomore season. He threw 70
strikeouts in 67 innings with a 2.14 ERA. One of the Indians' top starters for
two years, he signed a scholarship with LSU earlier this season.
Freshman
Kellen Ludwig of Leesburg, GA, was
drafted in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants. Though his
record was 1-1, he threw 40 strikeouts in 28 critical innings, making him one of
the Indians top closers.
Freshman
Tony Mandel of Pensacola was drafted
in the 17th round by the Anaheim Angels. He had a stellar 6-0 season
on the mound for the Indians including a complete game against Manatee in the
state tourney. He threw 52 strikeouts in 64 innings.
Sophomore third baseman Russell Martin of Montreal, Canada, was picked in the 17th
by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The former member of the Canadian National team hit
.324 with 18 doubles, 4 homeruns and 42 RBI's. He signed a scholarship with NC
State earlier this year.
Sophomore second baseman Ivan Naccarata of Laval Quebec, Canada, was picked in the 21st
round by the Houston Astros. Also a member of the Canadian National team,
Naccarata hit .365 with 16 homeruns and 56 RBI's.
Freshman
Victor Alvarez of Valencia,
Venezuella, was picked in the 37th round by the Colorado Rockies. He
hit .316 on the season.
Ricardo Nanita and Johnny
Lynch also were offered pro contracts, but both turned them down for college
scholarships. Nanita will play at Florida International University. Lynch signed
with the University of South Alabama.
Chipola coach Jeff Johnson says, “Not only are these great athletes,
they’re all fine people. We’re very happy that these players came in here
and contributed to our success and became better ball players. They will be fine
representatives of Chipola.”

TRUSTEES REAPPOINTED TO CHIPOLA BOARD
TALLAHASSEE--Governor Jeb Bush on
Friday, June 7, announced the reappointment of two members of the Chipola Junior
College District Board of Trustees whose terms expired in 2002.
John W. Padgett, 71, of Marianna,
retired, and Mark S. Plummer, 49, of Bristol, pharmacist, were both reappointed
for a term beginning June 7, 2002 and ending May 31, 2006.
A total of nine
trustees represent the Chipola’s five county district. Seven other trustees
are serving their original appointments through the following dates: Jennie B.
Goodman of Bonifay (2003), Jeff Crawford, Jr., of Marianna (2003), Gary Clark of
Chipley (2003), Abby Hinson of Chipley (2003), Brenda Taylor of Bonifay (2005)
Gina Stuart of Marianna (2005) and Danny Ryals of Blountstown (2005).
The Chipola board meets on the

EVERGLADES
EXHIBIT ON DISPLAY AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA--A pictorial exhibit entitled “The Everglades, Its
Exploitation and Conservation” is on display in the lobby of the Chipola
Junior College Literature/Language Building through June 20.
According to Joan Stadsklev, CJC Director of Fine and Performing Arts,
the free-standing exhibit shows the development, exploitation, and restoration
of the Everglades from 1898 to the present.
The exhibit is made possible by a grant from the Florida Humanities
Council, a non-profit organization funded by private donations, the National
Endowment for the Humanities and Florida’s Department of State, Division of
Cultural Affairs.
The public is invited to view the exhibit which is open Monday through
Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MARIANNA – It’s official. Chipola Junior College will offer a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education beginning in the Fall of 2003.
The offering of a bachelor’s degree will probably necessitate a name change for the 54 year-old college. CJC will retain its community college status for participation in intercollegiate athletics.
The
Florida Board of Education in May adopted a plan to offer four-year degrees in
selected disciplines on the campuses of Chipola, Edison and Miami-Dade Community
Colleges.
Chipola
was given 30 days to negotiate with Florida State University to decide which
school would provide access to baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration,
Nursing and Secondary Education.
In
a June 18 memorandum, Florida Education Secretary Jim Horne granted Chipola the
authority to offer a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education beginning in the
Fall of 2003. FSU will offer bachelor’s degrees in Nursing and Business
Administration on the CJC campus beginning this Fall.
Secretary
Horne had high praise for Chipola’s Secondary Education program. “CJC has a
unique program tailored to place-bound students, in collaboration with local
school districts, with a career ladder for school district paraprofessionals.
This program requires flexibility in offering alternatives for paraprofessionals
currently working in surrounding school districts,” said Horne.
FSU
proposed offering the Secondary Education program at the FSU Panama City campus.
But Horne said he adopted Chipola’s proposal in the interest of local
students. “The CJC approach was constructed to provide greater program
delivery flexibility for community members,” Horne said.
FSU
will assign additional full-time faculty to expand office hours, advisement and
instruction in its Nursing program at CJC.
FSU
also will offer a Business Administration bachelor’s degree at CJC beginning
this Fall. Secretary Horne said, “While this is a general business degree and
does not contain the specific tracks of accounting and MIS that CJC had
proposed; a negotiated plan to test enrollment interest in those specified areas
will provide the evidence needed to determine if expansion of the degrees is
warranted.”
Chipola
president Dr. Dale O'Daniel "We’re very excited about the prospects of
making these programs available to our students. We have a large number of
students who are place-bound and work-bound who cannot move beyond the two-year
degree, but who have the desire and the ability. This will allow the opportunity
and the avenue to do so."
O'Daniel indicated it would take a year to set up the program and begin the accreditation process.
In 2001, the Florida Legislature earmarked $3 million in the Department of Education budget in startup funds for community colleges to offer four-year programs.
St. Petersburg College, formerly St. Petersburg Community College, was granted permission to offer baccalaureate degree programs in 2001, making it the first community college to take advantage of the four-year opportunity.
Chipola will receive $187,000 to support start-up costs associated with establishing the Secondary Education bachelor’s program. FSU will receive $310,000 for start-up costs associated with offering the Nursing and business Administration degrees at Chipola.
Several bachelor's and advanced degrees are presently offered on the Chipola campus through the University Center @ Chipola. The University of West Florida offers bachelor's degrees in criminal justice, special/elementary education, social work and interdisciplinary information technology; a master's degree in educational leadership with certification in administration; specialist and doctoral degrees in curriculum and instruction on the CJC campus.

MARIANNA— The Chipola Junior College District Board of Trustees elected pharmacist Jenny Goodman of Bonifay as chair for 2002-03 during the board’s regular monthly meeting on June 18. Mark Plummer, a pharmacist from Bristol, was elected vice chair.
In other business, the board approved the college’s 2002-03 operating budget. The $10,535,000 spending plan is down two percent from last year’s budget of $10,700,000. The college’s 2001-02 budget was reduced by $502,000 during this fiscal year due to a downturn in state revenue collections.
The new budget calls for a five
percent increase in overall student fees. The increase will cost a full-time
academic student around $37 more per semester. Chipola president Dr. Dale
O'Daniel said, "We make every effort to hold down costs, but because
tuition in Florida is low, a state goal is to have students pay a greater share
of the cost of education. Our fees remain well within the state average and I
believe that we offer a high quality education at a reasonable cost." The
budget also provides for a five percent fund balance which is recommended by
state law.

MARIANNA—Chipola
sophomore Dominique
Townes has signed a scholarship to play basketball at Fort Hays State University
in Kansas.
A native of Charlotte, NC, Townes transferred to
Chipola from Dixie State College in Utah. At CJC, he averaged 9.2 points, 3.4
rebounds and 4.4 assists per game and shot 51% from the floor.
Fort Hays is an NCAA Division II university in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The
team finished 21-7 last season and won the NCAA Division II National
Championship in 1997.
All five Chipola sophomores have now signed with four-year universities:
Kareem Johnson, University of Cincinnati; David Hilton, Drexel University; John
Andrews, University of Louisiana-Monroe and Wayne Bransom, University of
Louisiana-Monroe. Chipola
finished the season with an 18-12 overall record.

CHIPOLA
AND JACKSON COUNTY JOIN FORCES FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT
MARIANNA--Jackson District Schools and the Workforce Development Division
at Chipola Junior College are collaborating to enhance the career training
opportunities for high school students in Jackson County by providing
transportation to the college.
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a 2.0 may take advantage of
existing school bus routes to dual enroll in Workforce Development programs at
CJC. Specifically, students from
the Malone, Sneads, and Grand Ridge area may access the college on one bus while
those from the Graceville and Cottondale area will also have a route.
Students from Chipola’s five county district with a
2.0 GPA are eligible to dual enroll in Workforce Development programs
after completing the ninth grade.
Bus transportation from Marianna High will not be provided due to the
close proximity of the college.
Superintendent Danny Sims said, "This service will provide students
with an excellent opportunity to begin career training at Chipola while
satisfying their elective credits at no cost to them or their parents.”
Bud Riviere, Dean of Workforce Development at CJC, says, “Students can
enroll in the colleges' array of high wage/high skill training opportunities,
work toward program completion, and prepare for employment at or before
graduating from high school. The college sincerely appreciates the fact that our

SERVING NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION INTERNSHIP
MARIANNA—Recent Chipola Junior College graduate Stephanie Crisp of
Graceville is currently serving an internship with the National Science
Foundation in Washington, D.C.
Crisp was public relations officer of the Chipola chapter of Phi Theta
Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, which sponsors the
intern program.
During
her internship with the National Science Foundation, Crisp is working with
another intern to write a series of profiles about students from two-year
colleges who have received NSF Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics
Scholarships. The interns will
conduct interviews and make site visits to three nearby two-year colleges with
scholarship grants. The profiles
will be published as a booklet entitled, “Developing Tomorrow’s Technology
Workforce: Community College
Success Stories,” which emphasizes the importance of mathematics and science
in teacher education programs. The
publications will be widely distributed to two-year college educators,
proponents of broad based education, and senior institution representatives, to
showcase the achievements of two-year college students and to promote the
two-year institutions for their participation in scholarship programs funded by
NSF. Crisp will also facilitate a
workshop, to be held at the Mayflower Hotel, focusing on the role of two-year
colleges in cyber security.
“Interning
at the National Science Foundation will be an extraordinary experience, and I am
thankful for this once in a lifetime opportunity to learn and grow,” says
Crisp. Through my internship, I
hope to gain knowledge and skills that will be advantageous to me in my future
educational and career endeavors.”
Crisp is a Microbiology and Cell
Science major who plans to transfer to the University of Florida to pursue a
career in dentistry. She hopes to specialize in orthodontics, and possibly open
a private practice near her hometown of Graceville.
Crisp was one of 12 interns selected from
the 1,600 students who were eligible to apply. She
also was a member of the All-USA Academic Second Team that placed her among the
top 40 students in a pool of over 10 million community college students.
Crisp is the third CJC student in the last four years to be named to the USA
Today Community and Junior College All Academic Team.
She is the daughter of Benjie and Stephen Crisp of Graceville.

MARIANNA--The
University Center @ Chipola Junior College is pleased to announce a new
collaborative agreement between Florida State University and Chipola.
Beginning
in the Fall semester, FSU will offer a full-time BS in Business Administration
on Chipola’s campus. In addition,
a part-time RN to BS in Nursing (BSN) degree will be delivered face-to-face on
Chipola’s campus. Courses will be
taught by faculty from FSU’s nationally-recognized and accredited Schools of
Business and Nursing. Graduates
will be awarded FSU degrees.
Student
input will influence the times and days on which classes will be scheduled.
FSU officials will pay particular attention to the need for flexible
scheduling for RN’s who enroll in the BSN program.
FSU
and Chipola have scheduled Information Sessions for both degrees on the Chipola
campus. Admissions specialists and
faculty will be on-hand to discuss program requirements, admission information,
registration procedures, and more.
The
Business Administration meeting is Tuesday, July 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in L400
at CJC. The RN to BSN meeting is Thursday, July 11 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in L400
at Chipola.
Anyone who wishes to enroll for the fall
2002 semester or who might be interested in enrolling at a later date is
encouraged to attend.
Dr.
Kitty Myers, who directs the CJC University Center says, “This is a unique
chance to obtain answers to your questions and receive assistance in completing
admission, registration, and financial aid procedures.
Attendance at these meetings is important to make your transfer to FSU @
Chipola trouble free.” Students
are encouraged to bring copies of transcripts.

MARIANNA--This fall, Chipola Junior College will offer ENC 1101
(Communications Skills I) in an online format.
Students and instructor will interact
via the Internet, meeting only once every two weeks at the college to write
in-class essays. A chat room, CD-ROM, discussion room, and e-mail replace most
of the instructor's classroom lectures and group discussions.
Dr. Laurie Culbreth, a CJC English
instructor who also teaches English online for the University of Phoenix will
teach the course.
Culbreth says, "Online students
must possess computer/internet skills and should be able to manage effectively
their academic, personal, and/or professional schedules."
CJC students who enrolled in the spring
or summer terms may register for fall classes on July 22-25 or Aug. 14-16.
New students may register for fall classes on Aug. 15 and 16 after
completing the application process.
