CHIPOLA HEAD
BASKETBALL COACH LEAVING FOR SOUTHERN MISS
MARIANNA—Chipola College men’s basketball coach Greg Heiar will be leaving
Chipola to take an assistant coaching job at the University of Southern
Mississippi. He will serve under head coach Larry Eustachy. USM is a member of
Conference USA.
Heiar will have some familiar faces on the USM roster, as two of his top Chipola
players—Torye Pelham and Gary Flowers—signed with USM earlier this year.
Coach Heiar led Chipola to four state championships in five seasons at the helm
of the Indians program, compiling a 165-15 career record. Last year, his
Indians finished third in the 2009 NJCAA national tournament. He guided the
Indians to seventh place in the 2008 National Tournament. His 2008 Indians also
set a school record for most wins in a season, finishing with a 35-2 mark.
In 2007, Coach Heiar and the Chipola Indians finished
second in the National Tournament.
Coach Heiar said, “When I was 27 years
old, Dr. Prough gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to coach the Chipola
Indians. I’m so appreciative to all the folks who have helped get our
program to the national level. Marianna and Jackson County is a fabulous place
to live and raise a family. Chipola is a fine institution with great traditions,
and I’m thankful for the part I was able to play in continuing those
traditions.”
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, said, “We are very pleased that coach Heiar
will have the opportunity to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a Division 1
basketball coach. We wish him and his family the best.”
Heiar served one season (2003-04) as top assistant to former Chipola coach Chris Jans. The 2004 season included a Conference Championship, State Championship and a sixth place finish at the 2004 National Tournament.
Before coming to Chipola, Heiar spent four seasons as an assistant at Loras College in Iowa. He also was an assistant coach at Franciscan University in Iowa in 1999.
As a player, Heiar was a second-team all-state selection at Dubuque Wahlert High in Iowa. At Kirkwood Community College, he earned second-team All-Region honors after leading his team to the National Tournament for the first time in school history. Heiar helped to guide his team to a conference championship and a 25-10 record. He also was captain of Chris Jans’ first team at Kirkwood.
Success followed Heiar to Franciscan University where he was twice named team captain and earned MVP honors. He earned numerous all-tournament honors, first-team all-conference, and led his team to the MCC Conference Title as a senior, the first time in school history.
Heiar and his wife, Jessica, have a seven year-old daughter, Alexis.

CHIPOLA ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO
CLAST TEST
MARIANNA—Chipola College officials recently announced changes to the College
Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) program.
The 2009 Florida Legislature has repealed the requirement to pass the “College
Level Communication and Mathematics Skills Examination” (CLAST) in order to be
awarded an Associate in Arts degree effective July 1, 2009.
In order to demonstrate continuing concern for institutional accountability and
effectiveness, as well as performance standards for student learning outcomes,
the Legislature maintained the current CLAST alternatives as degree
requirements. All community college students who are completing an Associate in
Arts (AA) Degree and are applying for admission to upper division (junior and
senior level) programs in Florida state colleges and universities must meet one
of the required CLAST alternatives. University students who are completing their
sophomore year also must meet the same requirements.
There are presently four CLAST Testing Alternatives:
1. Students who have earned a 2.5 GPA in both Communications Skills I & II (ENC
1101 & 1102) or its equivalent, may be exempt from the Reading, English Language
Skills, and Essay sections of the CLAST. Students who have earned a 2.5 GPA in
two 3-credit-hour Gordon Rule mathematics courses have met the CLAST Alternative
for the Mathematics section of the CLAST.
2. Alternatives via American College Testing Program (ACT): Math – Achieve 21 or
above on the Math subtest of the ACT.
Reading – Achieve 22 or
above on the Reading subtest of the ACT. English Language Skills and Essay –
Achieve 21 or above on the English subtest of the ACT.
3. Alternatives via Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT-I): Math – Achieve 500 or
above to meet Math requirement.
Verbal – Achieve 500 or
above to meet Reading, English Language Skills and Essay requirements
4. Alternatives via waiver by committee for students with documented specific
learning disabilities. If a student does not qualify for one of the CLAST
alternatives, the Associate in Arts (AA) degree will not be granted and
admission to upper division status at Florida state colleges and universities
may be denied.
CLAST requirements also apply to students transferring to Florida state colleges
and universities from private colleges in Florida and from out-of-state colleges
and universities. All CLAST alternatives must be approved by the Dean of
Enrollment Services.
For questions about Chipola’s CLAST alternatives, call 850-718-2271.

CHIPOLA EVENT TO
HONOR THE LATE ‘BIG SAM’ MITCHELL
MARIANNA—Legendary leader “Big Sam” Mitchell will
be honored at a ceremony, dinner and dance
celebrating his life on Aug. 29 at the National Guard Armory in Marianna.
The event will honor the former Florida legislator’s legacy while raising funds
to create a perpetual scholarship in his name at Chipola College, where he
played on the college’s first football and basketball teams in 1947.
“Big Sam,”
developed a larger than life persona during his 40-year career as
a coach, principal and father figure to thousands of
children in Vernon and Washington County.
He began his coaching career
at Campbellton High School in 1952 where he had a 24-2 record in his first
season.
He was called to service in the United States Army, and upon returning home from
military duty, Mitchell established himself at Vernon High School, where he
compiled an overall career record as a basketball coach of 396-59. As a football
coach, Mitchell compiled an impressive record of 113 wins and only 17 losses.
Mitchell’s basketball team won the state championship in 1957. He was chosen
basketball coach of the year in 1957, and football coach of the year in 1961.
Mitchell was appointed principal of Vernon High School in 1967 and served until
1977. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Florida High School
Activities Association from 1968-1975, and served as vice-president from 1975 to
1977.
Mitchell was
elected by the people of this area to serve in the Florida Legislature. He
served for more than 20 years, receiving many legislative awards. He completed
his term as speaker pro tempore during the 1988-1990 sessions.
At the time of his retirement from
the Florida House, Mitchell was one of the longest serving and most respected
members in the history of the Florida legislature.
Former Rep. Robert Trammell who served alongside
Mitchell in the Florida House for many years, said, “Big Sam was very proud of
his rural beginnings. He never forgot who he was or where he came from. Even
though he was one of the most powerful and influential leaders in the state of
Florida, he always preferred the simple things in life and was always a friend
to the little man.”
After retiring in 1994, he
worked with the Florida Lakes Department for three years. Mitchell was born Aug.
2, 1929, in Chipley. He married Nellie Henders on Sept. 4, 1951, and they had
two children, Brenda and Sammie Jean. After retirement he settled down in
Vernon, where he ran a small seafood business as a hobby, which allowed him to
make new friends until his death in November 2003.
The Aug. 29 dinner is
hosted by “Friends of Sam Mitchell" and sponsored by the
Chipola Appreciation Club. The event will celebrate Mitchell's
life and contributions to the people
of this area while helping to endow a scholarship in his
memory at the school that gave him his start. Chipola president
Dr. Gene Prough, said, “Sam loved Chipola and he gave the college credit for
providing him the opportunity to earn an education. I know that Sam would be
proud that we are establishing this scholarship in his name to insure that other
people have the same opportunity that he had.”
The event will
begin with a social hour at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
Entertainment will begin at 8 p.m., featuring the world-famous Embers, the
Raleigh, NC, band renowned for its exciting renditions of nostalgic "beach
music.” Also appearing will be a 1960’s era band, the Villagers, which includes
several Chipola alumni.

signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Corbin was selected in the second round of the 2009 Major League Baseball
First-Year Player Draft held in June.
According to an LA Times report, Corbin received a six-figure signing bonus. He
is expected to join Single-A Orem, Utah.
Chipola has several connections with the Angels organization. Former Chipola
pitcher Ryan Chaffee was drafted by the Angels in 2008. Tom Kotchman, a scout
and manager in the Angels minor league system, played at Chipola in the 1970’s.
His daughter Christal was a starting infielder on Chipola’s 2007 National
Championship Softball team. Tom also helped draft Marianna native Jeff Mathis,
brother of former Chipola player Jake Mathis. Jeff shares starting catcher
duties for the LA Angels.

CHIPOLA SUMMER
SESSION II REGISTRATION IS JUNE 25
MARIANNA—Registration for
Summer Session II at Chipola College is Thursday, June 25. Classes begin Monday,
June 29, with late registration continuing through noon on June 30.
New students who take at
least one class during the summer term may register early for Fall 2009 classes.
Applications for Admission
and the summer schedule of classes are available in the Admissions Office or
on-line at www.chipola.edu
College officials recently completed the 2009-2010 Schedule which has additional
terms to help students in scheduling. During the Fall 2009 semester, students
may choose from three different terms. Terms A and B both begin Aug. 24. Term A
runs Aug. 24 through Dec. 16. Term B classes are Aug. 24 through Oct. 15.
Term C runs Oct. 16 through Dec 16.
Dr. Sarah Clemmons, Senior Vice President of Instruction and Student Services,
says, “This new schedule has the potential to help many of our students. There
are students who miss the deadline at the beginning of the semester, or who
decide to go to college at the last minute. This gives them a chance to enroll
at mid-semester.”
Students who miss the regular Fall 2009 registration in late August will have a
couple of months to plan for the Fall B term registration on Oct. 15.
Clemmons says that condensing coursework into a shorter term also is a better
fit for some people. “There are students who prefer to work intensively on one
course for a few weeks, and then move on to the next course. We’re always trying
to improve our schedule of courses to help meet people’s needs in terms of life
and family situations.”
In addition to the new terms this Fall, the college will continue to offer most
courses four days a week with Fridays off. A good selection of Friday-only
classes are also scheduled. The college also has added at least a dozen new
online courses in an effort to provide access to more students.
Chipola offers the Associate
in Arts Degree, the Associate in Science Degree, the Associate in Applied
Science, Workforce Development programs and Bachelor of Science Degrees in
Secondary and Middle School Education with majors in Math and Science,
Elementary Education, Exceptional Student Education, Nursing and Business.
