host the first “Chipola Champs Camp” for 18 children, ages 11-17, from Leon,
Bay, Gadsden, Jackson and Holmes counties on Feb. 19 and 20.
Last year, DCF and their partners across the state held more than a dozen
Camps for Champions for 1,000 children in foster care. These camps
provided mentoring, team-building and leadership activities. Several camps
focused on athletics, but others offered art classes, technology and more.
All of the camps helped the youth share a special experience, build self-esteem
and character and strengthen life skills.
The two-day Chipola Champs Camp will give youth in foster care and
children receiving services in their own homes an opportunity to experience a
college environment while participating in fun and educational arts, athletics
and academic activities. The camp will allow the youth to learn more about
themselves and their future career interests through leadership, professional
and growth activities, hands-on learning activities focused on science,
technology and vocational skills, and mentoring sessions.
During the men’s basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 19, the campers will be
called to the court at halftime to be recognized, and lucky campers will compete
in a shoot-out contest to win a big prize. On Wednesday, the youth will be
participating in various learning activities, and attending a special musical
performance arranged exclusively for these youth by the theatre department.
Champs Camp will conclude Wednesday afternoon with a session to guide the youth
to a clear pathway to post-secondary education led by Christen Bennett. DCF will
also announce a new local mentoring program for the youth.
Media are invited to attend the following events on the Chipola campus:
Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7:30 p.m. CST: Recognition of first ever “Chipola Champs Camp”
at halftime during men’s basketball game; Wednesday, Feb. 20: 9 a.m.-10 a.m.:

career-focused activities offered at the first-ever Chipola Champs Camp.
The Department of Children and Families, Big Bend Community Based Care
and Anchorage Children’s Home teamed up with Chipola College to host the two-day
camp for children ages 11-17.
The camp gave the youth an opportunity to experience a college
environment while participating in fun and educational arts, athletics and
academic activities.
Chipola employees Joc Calloway, Dr. Bryan Craven, Alicia Hatcher and
Alice Pendergrass served as hosts for the camp. Students were recognized
at a Chipola basketball game. Academic activities included “Weird Science

providing year-round camp experiences for more than 1,000 children in foster
care. The Chipola camp is the first to offer a curriculum focused on
post-secondary education and careers. It is also the first to pair the youth
with an adult volunteer who will guide and motivate them on an ongoing basis.
“We thank Chipola for designing an incredible curriculum full of hands-on
activities that really got our kids thinking about their futures,” said Vicki
Abrams, DCF’s Northwest Regional Director. “Through our new mentoring program,
adult volunteers will support these youth on an ongoing basis and enable them to
achieve their goals and aspirations.”
The camp was designed to allow the youth to learn more about themselves
and their future career interests through leadership, professional and growth
activities, and applied learning activities.
“We were very happy to have so many fine young people on our campus to
learn about the opportunities for higher education,” said Dr. Gene Prough,
President of Chipola College. “I am proud of all the students and faculty who
helped make this day a great success.”

MARCH CRAA
MEETING TO BE HELD AT LIBERTY COUNTY CIVIC CENTER
MARIANNA— Each year the Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA) holds a
meeting in a different featured county to increase interest and support for CRAA
programs. This year, the meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at

The public is invited to attend. There will be a catered lunch
available for $8-$10. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program at noon.
Please RSVP by March 10.
The program will feature teachers from Liberty County who have been
awarded CRAA mini-grants for improvement of instruction in the arts. The program
also will include a historical look into the development of the
Veterans Memorial Park Railroad
and the Liberty Arts Council.
Since its formation in 2003, the Liberty Arts Council has sponsored an annual
“Art Alive” Show and Sale and an annual performance of “The Nutcracker.” The
group recently produced its first Broadway Junior production, “The Music Man
Junior.” Additionally, they have sponsored numerous professional touring
arts programs to ensure that the Liberty County community has art programs
available for everyone.
Since the formation of the Council, Chipola has consistently had students
from this area majoring in Music, Art, or Theatre. In the last three years
there has been a 50% increase in these students and now students from Liberty
County now make up 1/5 of Chipola’s fine and performing arts programs.
The Partner in the Arts campaign has just been launched to support next
year’s CRAA programs. Contributors to this campaign not only help support
the arts in the community, but are also recognized on the Artist Series programs
