PREPARE NOW FOR SPRING CLASSES AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—New students planning to enroll in Chipola College during the
Spring 2013 semester are encouraged to make application before the college
closes for the holidays.
There are several steps to completing the application process: (1)
complete the college Admission Application; call 718-2311 for assistance; (2)
request a final high school transcript be sent to Chipola Admission and Records
Office; and (3) take the College Placement Test; call 718-2284 for assistance.
New student testing begins Jan. 2. Returning student registration is Jan.
3. New and returning student registration is Jan. 4. Classes begin Jan. 7.
Chipola offers the Associate in Arts Degree,
the Associate in Science Degree and Workforce Development programs.
Bachelor’s Degrees include: Education majors in Middle and High School
Math or Science, English Education, Exceptional Student Education and Elementary
Education; Business Administration degree with concentrations in Management or
Accounting; and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Additionally, the
college offers the Educator Preparation Institute, a Teacher Certification
program for those with a B.S. in a non-teaching field.
The Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree is designed for students who plan to
complete their first two years of college work and then transfer to a four-year
program at Chipola or another college or university. Credits earned are
transferable and are applicable toward a bachelor’s degree. Academic
advising guides that outline requirements for specific majors are
available from Student Affairs and are located on the
college website at

Several Associate in Science (AS) and Workforce programs are offered
which provide training for high wage jobs. Workforce programs include:
Automotive Service Technology, Firefighter, Law Enforcement Officer,

TEACHER WORKSHOP SET AT CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Future Educators Club will host its sixth
Annual Teacher Workshop, Saturday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Teachers and students interested in a career in education are invited to attend.
Future educators currently enrolled at Chipola with the assistance of the
education faculty, staff, and education graduates will present the free workshop
for area educators and education students. The day will include various
sessions for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The students will
present hands-on activities that can be used in the classroom along with samples
for teachers and education majors to take and use in their own classrooms.
The program will include presentations and strategies in Math, Science,
Reading, English, ESOL, and ESE. Sessions include: Getting outside of the
Basal with Reading Strategies; Classroom Management Strategies; How To Make
Science Come Alive; Using JR Tolkien to Teach Poetry and Imagery; Science
Experiments in the Primary Grades; Activities Using Patricia Palacco Texts;
Teaching Middle School Language Arts Through the Use of Pop Culture; Blood
Typing Lab for the Biology Teacher; Get It For Free! (Free Resources Available
to Teachers); Pinterest in the Classroom; English Assessments Other Than Book
Reports; Integrating Art Into Writing; How to Bring the New Student Through a
Period of Culture Shock; Integrating Social Studies into Your Everyday
Curriculum; Using Your Tablet/IPAD to Maximize Instruction; The Classroom Polar
Express; and a General Ideas Room with representatives from the Chipola Area

Taura Brock (Vernon Middle) will be presenting Cooperative Learning Strategies
and Techniques as a guest session. Heather Bailey (Graceville Elementary) will
be presenting a session on Whole Brain Teaching
The workshop will be held in the Literature/Language (Building Z) on the

HAIRSPRAY AUDITIONS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College theatre director Charles Sirmon announces open
auditions for the hit musical “Hairspray,” Jan. 7-8 at 6 p.m., in the Center for
the Arts.
“Hairspray” tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a large girl with big hair
and a kind heart, who has only one passion—to dance. She wins a spot on the
local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and is quickly transformed into
a teen celebrity. She then successfully sets out to vanquish the program's
reigning princess, win the heart of the super handsome Link Larkin, and racially
integrate the television show.
Sirmon will cast a minimum of 18 women and 14 men in named roles. He also
will cast a dancing/singing ensemble. Some roles are race and gender specific.
There also are opportunities for anyone interested in working with the backstage
crew.

ILLUSIONIST TO PERFORM FOR CHIPOLA ARTIST
SERIES
MARIANNA—The second event in the Chipola Artist Series is a first for the
college. Illusionist Sammy Cortino will present his Las Vegas style magic show
in the Center for the Arts, Jan. 17, 2013.
With Siegfried and Roy and Lance Burton endorsing his International
Brotherhood of Magicians membership, Sammy Cortino is taking magic back to its
roots in its purest, up-to-date form. His raw, live, unprecedented style brings
out a sense of old Hollywood charm. Going against the mesh of cutting-edge
illusionists of today, he is reviving the classics of magic presented in the
spirit of the late Houdini and Harry Blackstone. Cortino holds a Doctoral Degree
in Magic from the International Magicians Society and is a member of London’s
Magic Circle.

Click “Fine Arts” and “Artist Series.” Online tickets can be printed at home, or
with an order confirmation, will-call tickets will be available at the box
office the night of the show. Box office hours will be
established closer to the performance. Single event ticket sales will be $14 for

Two more events follow Cortino in the Chipola Artist Series. The Davis
and Dow jazz quartet featuring a vocalist and a request-by-favorites second half
is Feb.7, 2013. The popular bluegrass/country comedy group, Three on a String,

CHIPOLA HOSTS STEM MEETING—Some
of the top students from area high schools recently participated in a STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) conference at Chipola College.
Students built and tested trebuchets (catapults) which launched tennis balls for
distance and accuracy. Guest speakers from the University of Florida were Dr.
Selman Hershfield, Department of Physics and Diane Archer-Banks, College of
Education. STEM is a three-year project to raise students’ interest in Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

INDIANS STILL PERFECT HEADING INTO SANTA FE
SHOOTOUT
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians play at Waycross Dec. 4 before heading to
Gainesville Dec. 8-9 for the Florida Shootout at Santa Fe College. Chipola plays
Polk at 5 p.m. Saturday and Palm Beach at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Chipola improved to 10-0 with a pair of home wins in the Panhandle
Classic. The Indians crushed Santa Fe 96-50 on Nov. 30. Six Chipola players
finished in double figures led by Cinmeon Bowers with 19 points and 5 rebounds.
Chris Thomas had 14 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds. Earl Watson scored 14
points with 8 rebounds. Demone Harrison had 13. Demetrious Floyd scored 11, and
Kruize Pinkins added 10.
The Indians beat Brunswick 81-65 on Dec. 1. Pinkins led Chipola with 26
points and 11 rebounds. Carlos Morris had 19 points and 6 rebounds. Chris Thomas
had 11 points and 5 assists. Earl Watson had 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Chipola moved to second place in the FCSAA Top 10 behind top-ranked
Northwest (9-0). Gulf Coast (10-1) is third. Tallahassee (8-2) is sixth.
Pensacola (10-2) is seventh.
Chipola logged two wins on Nov. 23-24 at the Northwest Florida Rick
Flores Classic. The Indians beat Columbia State 87-73. Carlos Morris led Chipola
with 18 points. Bowers and Pinkins added 16 points each. Chipola outlasted Lee
College 75-67 on Nov. 23.
In women’s basketball, the Chipola Lady Indians (11-1) are third in the
FCSAA state poll. Northwest (10-0) is first. Gulf Coast (9-1) is second.
Tallahassee (8-2) is fifth. Pensacola (8-3) is sixth.
The Lady Indians suffered their first misfire of the season in a 76-66
loss to Florida State College on Nov. 30. Jasmine Crawford led Chipola with 16
points. Kristine Brance had 15 points. Rahni Bell added 13.
Chipola whipped Miami-Dade 78-44 on Dec. 1. Rayven Brooks led Chipola
with 22 points. Kristine Brance had 17 points.
Rahni Bell had 14.

STARS SHINING IN CHIPOLA CENTER FOR THE ARTS
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Center for the Arts is a little brighter
with the Wall of Stars beaming with the names of those who have supported the
arts with donations to the Applause! fundraising campaign.
Stars are mounted on a special display in the lobby. Seat plaques are in
place and some donors are immortalized as legacy contributors with their own
room named after them.
“This is just the beginning,” said Dr. Daniel Powell, Associate Dean of
Fine and Performing Arts. “This Center for the Arts is the crown jewel of the
community, and I want people to feel welcome and even place their names proudly
on a star, seat, or even a room.”
Star donations are $500 for bronze, $1,000 for silver, and $2,500 for
gold. Seat plaques can be purchased for $250 for an orchestra level and
$150 for a balcony seat. Legacy gifts start at $10,000 to name a room and
go up to $1 million to name the main theatre. “There is a contribution
level for everybody and this make a great gift for someone who you would like to
have a permanent place in the Center surrounded by the arts,” Powell says.
The campaign will continue
for at least two more years and then will be reassessed at that point. All
funds raised will benefit the Center for the Arts and its programming.

CHIPOLA
PLACES IN GLOBAL BUSINESS COMPETITION
MARIANNA—Four teams from professor Bob Foulk’s Strategic Management class
represented Chipola College in a recent Global Business Simulation competition.
The 10-week competition included 3,142 teams from 226 colleges and
universities worldwide. The Chipola winner, DDynamic Footwear, co-managed
by Lee Herringerring, Jason Holland and Kim Grant, finished tied for the 42nd
best Overall Score worldwide.
Additionally, for the first time at Chipola, this team scored in the top
100 teams every week of the 10-week competition.
The team has been invited to compete in the next upcoming Best Strategy
Invitational against industry winning teams from colleges and universities
across the globe.

MAGIC SHOW
AT NEXT CRAA MEETING
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA) will feature the
Magic Comedy Show on the meeting program Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Jim’s Buffet and
Grill, with a Dutch-treat buffet luncheon from 11:30 to noon with the program at
noon.
The owner and illusionist, Vernon, is a member of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians and has been practicing magic and illusions since he
was 7 years old. He has a portable studio and performs everything from
large scale illusions to birthday parties. For more information about this

Attendees will also be entered into a drawing for artist series tickets
to Illusionist Sammy Cortino who will perform at the Center for the Arts on
January 17 at 7:00 PM.
The CRAA just received many applications for their popular mini-grant
program and will begin searching for rotating scholarship applicants in
Washington County this year. The upcoming Partner in the Arts campaign
makes it possible to continue these programs and improve the cultural life in
the Chipola District.
