CHIPOLA TO HOST PANHANDLE CLASSIC
MARIANNA—Chipola hosts the Panhandle Classic Dec. 2-4 in the Milton H. Johnson
Health Center.
Six teams from the FCCAA Top 10 will be in action. Northwest Florida State (9-0)
is the top-ranked team in the state poll. Chipola (8-1) is ranked third.
Tallahassee (7-2) is fourth. Miami Dade (6-2) is fifth. Santa Fe (8-1) is
sixth. Pensacola (8-3) is tied for tenth place with Daytona.
Action begins Thursday with Miami-Dade and Southern Sports Academy at 5 p.m.
Chipola plays Tampa Bay Academy at 7 p.m.
All five Panhandle Conference teams will be in action Friday beginning with
Tallahassee and Alabama Southern at noon. Pensacola plays Southern Sports
Academy at 2 p.m. Gulf Coast plays Miami-Dade at 4 p.m. Northwest Florida faces
Brunswick at 6 p.m. Chipola plays Santa Fe in the 8 p.m. nightcap.
Action continues Saturday with Pensacola and Alabama Southern at noon. Gulf
Coast and Southern Sports Academy face off at 2 p.m. Tallahassee and Sante Fe
meet at 4 p.m. Northwest Florida plays Miami Dade at 6 p.m.
Chipola takes on Brunswick in the 8 p.m. nightcap Saturday. During pre-game,
members of the Chipola Softball team will be presented their 2010 State
Championship rings. A reception will be held for the players’ families and
appreciation club members during halftime.
The Indians improved to 8-1 with an 86-78 win over Northwest Shoals (AL) on Nov.
27 at the Rick Flores Classic in Niceville. Marcus Knight led Chipola with
19 points. Shamarr Bowden had 18. Keith Dewitt and Geron Johnson scored 15
points apiece.
Chipola outlasted Daytona State to win 66-54 on Nov. 26. Marcus Sutton led
Chipola with 17 points. Shamarr Bowden had 14.
The Indians suffered their only misfire of the season in a 72-61 loss to Monroe
College Nov. 20 in the MDC Shark Classic. Chipola got back on track Nov. 21
beating Miami Dade, 71-69.
Both Chipola teams open the Conference season Jan. 8 at Gulf Coast. Chipola’s
next home games are Jan. 11, 2011, when both teams host Pensacola.

MARIANNA—The Chipola College District
Board of Trustees on Nov. 23 approved a two percent salary increase for career,
professional and administrative employees filling positions on the table of
personnel.
The
increase is effective for the 2010-11 year and includes faculty employees
contingent upon ratification by the faculty’s collective bargaining unit, the
Chipola Faculty Association.
The
board also agreed to continue to fully cover the cost of individual health
insurance premiums and retirement contributions. Health insurance premiums
increased 5.61 percent this year and have grown by more than 35 percent since
2007. Full-time employees of the college receive Blue Cross health insurance
coverage as part of their benefits package. The college pays $406 a month for
individual insurance premiums which totals $4,872 annually. Employees also have
the option of purchasing health insurance for spouses and children.
The
college also contributes 10.77 percent of each full-time employee’s annual
salary to the Florida Retirement System which reflects a .92 percent increase
over last year.
Chipola president Dr. Prough said, “Chipola’s most
important resource is the people who serve our students. I am proud that
our board agreed to improve salaries and to fully cover the increased cost of
benefits for these employees who provide quality
educational opportunities for this community.”
Chipola is one of 28 community colleges in Florida and was designated a state
college in 2008. Some 2,000 students are enrolled this Fall with an annual
enrollment of more than 5,000.
The
college offers the Associate in Arts (AA) degree which provides the first two
years of college for students planning to transfer to a university at the junior
level or into one of Chipola’s four-year programs.
Chipola
offers eight Bachelor’s degrees: Secondary Education with majors in Mathematics
and Science for middle or high school, Elementary Education, Exceptional Student
Education, Business Management and RN to BSN in nursing.
The
college also offers several Workforce programs, including Automotive
Technology, Corrections, Computer Systems
Technology, Cosmetology and Law Enforcement. Associate in Science (AS) programs
include: Business Administration and Management, Computer Information
Administration, Criminal Justice Technology, Culinary Management, Dental
Hygiene, Early Childhood Education, Fire Science, Network Administration and
Recreation Technology.
The Health Science Division offers the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program
leading to LPN or RN certification. The college also offers Emergency Medical
Technician (EMT) and Paramedic programs. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

SUNDAY MATINEE ADDED TO
JAZZMATAZZ CHRISTMAS
MARIANNA—Due to the quick selling of tickets for Chipola Show Choir’s A
Jazzmatazz Christmas, the Fine Arts Department has added a Sunday matinee on
Dec. 12, at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 each for adults and $5 for children ages 18 and younger.
Tickets may be purchased in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building or from any Show
Choir member. Any remaining tickets will be on sale at the Theater box
office 30 minutes prior to show time.
All those with tickets to any of the Jazzmatazz shows are asked to bring a can
of non-perishable food to the concert for donation to local food banks to share

SMALL BUSINESS SEMINARS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer two small business seminars on Friday, Dec.
10.
Discovering Missed Business Income Tax Deductions will meet Friday, Dec. 10,
from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar will explore which tax deduction areas
are being missed due to lack of communication with the tax preparer. Existing
business owners may determine if a change of entity can decrease their taxes.
CPA Johnny Branch, a Certified Business Analyst, will lead the seminar.
Steps to Starting a Small Business will meet Friday, Dec. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Topics include discussion on organizational requirements and licensing for a
small business in Florida, personal financial assessments, credit checks,
defining customers, location considerations and employee requirements.
Valerie Simmons, a Certified Business Analyst with the Small Business
Development Center, will lead the seminar.
Both workshops will meet in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology
building. Cost of each seminar is $20.
The Small Business Development Center is based in Lynn Haven and utilizes
experienced business owners to present hands-on instruction from the business
world.

STUDENTS VISIT FAMU—Chipola
College Elementary Education Majors enrolled in the “Teaching Elementary
Social Science” course recently visited the Meek Archives at Florida A and M
University and the Florida History Museum. The field trip was intended to enrich
the students’ Social Science knowledge. The students are seniors in the
Elementary Education program and most will be interning in the Spring 2011
semester.

Nursing Assistant class beginning Jan. 10.
The course meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for
ten weeks.
The CNA certification offers the chance for good jobs locally. Most students in
the program are employed before completing the course.

ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
MARIANNA—The Chipola Theatre will hold auditions for “Little Shop of Horrors,”
Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. and Jan. 11 at 6 p.m.
The long-running Off-Broadway hit musical by the songwriting team of Alan Menken
and Howard Ashman will run March 9-13, 2011, in the Chipola Theatre.
The story centers on Floral-shop employee Seymour who discovers an exotic plant
species at a flea market and brings it back to Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist, where
the mysterious plant draws in curiosity seekers and customers. Mr. Mushnik
is thrilled with the new business, but soon, Seymour learns the plant has an
unusual appetite that must be satisfied. The plant, named “Audrey 2,” having
developed a mind and a rhythm-and-blues singing voice of its own, demands that
Seymour fulfill its cravings, promising wealth and fame in exchange.
Auditioners should be prepared to sing, dance and read lines from a script.
Parts available include:
Seymour, a tenor
singing voice and a bit of a klutz; Audrey, a high and squeaky voice with a
Brooklyn accent; Mr. Mushnik, a foreign accent who rants in Yiddish; Dentist
Orin Scrivello, who speaks with a cool drawl and sings in spoken and yelled
words; the Voice of Audrey 2, who sings in a powerful, deep R&B bass-baritone
voice; and the trio of Chiffon, Ronnette
and Crystal, ages 16-30, in extremely important singing and dancing roles.
In
addition to the voice of Audrey II, a puppeteer is needed to manipulate three of
the four Audrey II puppets.

INDIANS MOVE TO THIRD IN STATE
POLL
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians improved to 11-1 with three wins in the Panhandle
Classic played Dec. 2-4 in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
Chipola moved to third in the FCCAA State Poll behind Northwest and Palm Beach
both tied for first place. Tallahassee is fourth.
Chipola began the weekend with a
104-53 rout of visiting Tampa Bay Academy. Seven Indians scored in double
figures led by Rashad Perkins with 19. Elijah Pittman scored 16 and Sam Grooms
had 15.
The Indians outlasted sixth ranked Santa Fe 64-55 on Dec. 3. Shamarr Bowden led
Chipola with 15 points. Marcos Knight had 13. Pittman added 10.
Chipola closed out the classic with a 73-69 win over Brunswick on Dec. 4. Geron
Johnson led the Indians with 19 points. Bowden had 15 including four
three-pointers. Keith Dewitt added 12 points and 18 rebounds. Marcos Knight
suffered a shoulder injury in the game.
Chipola head coach Jake Headrick said overall he is pleased with the Indians’
progress. “We’ve got to focus on finishing games and we need to get a lot better
to be ready for the conference season.”
Chipola plays Polk and St. Pete in the final games of the Fall schedule Dec.
10-11 in the Gainesville Shootout.
In other action at the Panhandle Classic on Dec. 4, Alabama Southern defeated
Pensacola 65-63. Gulf Coast trounced Southern Sports Academy 88-55.
Tallahassee beat Santa Fe 61-51. Northwest beat Miami Dade 71-56.
On Dec. 3, Tallahassee beat Alabama Southern 78-68. Pensacola whipped Southern
Sports Academy 90-59. Miami Dade beat Gulf Coast 75-66. Brunswick College
outlasted Northwest 73-72.
On Dec. 2, Miami Dade crushed Southern Sports Academy 117-85. Alabama
Southern beat Gulf Coast 84-71.

LADY INDIANS RANKED FOURTH IN
STATE POLL
MARIANNA—The Chipola Lady Indians improved to 9-3 on the year with a 101-65 win
over Miami Dade on Dec. 4.
Carleeda Green led Chipola with 24. Jasmine Shaw scored 22. Sara Djassi had 20.
Brieona Warner added 10. Ance Celmina pulled in 9 rebounds.
The Lady Indians were 7 of 10 from the three-point line in the first half and 6
of 10 in the second half. Chipola led 52-32 at the half.
The Lady Indians outlasted St. Petersburg 60-58 on Dec. 3. Shaw led Chipola with
13 points. Djassi had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Celmina had 10 points and 9
rebounds.
Chipola will be without the services of sophomore point guard Tykeshia O’Neill
who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week.
The Lady Indians are tied for fourth in the FCCAA State Poll and sixteenth in
the NJCAA National Poll. Pensacola sits atop both the state and national polls.
Panhandle Conference teams occupy the top five spots in the FCCAA State Poll.
Pensacola (13-0) is first. Gulf Coast (6-1) is second. Tallahassee (7-1)
is third. Chipola (9-3) and Northwest (10-1) are tied for fourth.
Chipola hits the road for a series of games over the next few weeks, returning
to the area for games in Panama City, Dec. 17-18. The team opens the conference
season at Gulf Coast, Jan. 8. Chipola’s next home game is Jan. 11, 2011, when
they host Pensacola.

OLYMPIC SOFTBALL
PLAYERS COMING TO CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Area softball players will have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to
work with three team USA Olympic medalists at the Chipola College Softball
field, Jan. 22-23, 2011.
The Triple Threat team of Cat Osterman, Kelly Kretschman and Caitlin Lowe will
provide a weekend of softball instruction focusing on pitching, offense and
defense.
Pitcher Cat Osterman played at the University of Texas. She was an Olympic Gold
Medalist and Silver Medalist, a two-time World Cup Champion and a two-time Pan
American Gold Medalist. Osterman was a three-time USA Collegiate Player of the
Year and a three-time NFCA First-Team All-American. She was the two-time ESPY
Award winner as the Top Collegiate Female Athlete. Cat is the assistant softball
coach at DePaul University in Chicago, and plays professionally for the Rockford
Thunder.
Kelly Kretschman played outfield and infield at the University of Alabama. She
was an Olympic Gold Medalist and Silver Medalist. She also was a Gold medalist
at the Pan American Games and a member of the World Cup Championship team. The
four-time NFCA All-American lives in Southern California and plays for the USSSA
Pride.
Caitlin Lowe played outfield at the University of Arizona. She was an Olympic
Silver Medalist and a Gold medalist at Pan American Games. A member of the
two-time World Cup Championship team, she also was a four-time NFCA First-Team
All-American. Caitlin now resides in Texas where she gives specialized lessons
in out-fielding and slapping.
Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix says, “This is a great opportunity for local
players to learn from some of the best softball players in America.”
The two day Chipola camp will include six hours of instruction each day with
lunch included. Registration fee is $200 by Dec. 18 and $250 after Dec. 18.

BLOUNTSTOWN STUDENTS BEGIN
A+ CERTIFICATION
MARIANNA—Four Blountstown High students who are dual enrolled in the Chipola
College Networking Services Technology program completed the first of two exams
required to earn the A+ Certification.
The students—Sawyer Maxwell, Harlea Perdue, Travis Pittman and Brandon
Alford—completed the examination in Chipola’s Testing Center.
Chipola Computer Systems Technology Instructor Dean Giles, said, “We now have
the ability for our computer networking students to take their industry
certification exams right on campus. Our Testing Center and Information Systems

During the course, students installed systems and software, and performed
maintenance and troubleshooting on desktop computer systems.
Bud Riviere, Chipola Dean of Workforce Programs, said, “The great thing about
this program is that the students are able to earn the A+ Certification while
still in high school. A+ is the industry standard minimum certification to work
as a computer technician. Industry certification is crucial to be competitive in
this job market.”
Blountstown High technology instructor Debra Perdue facilitated the class at the
high school.

CHIPOLA SPRING REGISTRATION
BEGINS JAN. 5
MARIANNA—Chipola College Spring registration for returning students is Jan. 5.
New and returning students may register on Jan. 6. Classes begin Jan. 7.
Chipola offers AA degrees,
workforce programs and BS degrees. The Associate in Arts (AA) degree provides
the first two years of college for students planning to transfer to a university
or into one of Chipola’s Bachelor’s degree programs. Curriculum guides that
outline requirements for specific majors are available on the college website at
www.chipola.edu
Chipola offers eight
Bachelor’s degrees programs: Secondary Education with majors in Mathematics and
Science for middle or high school, Elementary Education, Exceptional Student
Education, Business Management and an RN to BSN program in nursing. The college
also offers an Educator Preparation Institute which provides teacher
certification for persons with a bachelor’s degree in a non-teaching major.
Chipola was recently
approved to offer a BS degree in Business Administration with concentrations in
Accounting and Management and a BS degree in English Education. The new
degrees will begin in May, 2011.
Chipola’s Workforce programs
include: Automotive Technology, Corrections, Computer Systems Technology,
Cosmetology and Law Enforcement. Associate in Science (AS) programs include:
Business Administration and Management, Computer Information Administration,
Criminal Justice Technology, Culinary Management, Early Childhood Education,
Fire Science, Network Administration and Recreation Technology.
The Health Science Division offers training programs for a number of
health-related careers. The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program is a 1+1 LPN
to RN curriculum. Students are eligible to take the LPN exam after the first
year, and the RN exam after the second year. The college also offers an
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program and a Paramedic program. A new
Paramedic to RN bridge program is set to begin in Summer of 2011.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) classes are set to begin in January.
Chipola’s open-door policy
allows any student with a high school diploma to enroll after completing an
application and providing high school or college transcripts.
