CHIPOLA FALL REGISTRATION
BEGINS WEDNESDAY
MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold Fall registration for returning students
Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Returning students are those who
enrolled in the Spring or Summer 2011 terms.
New and returning
student registration is Aug. 18-19. Classes begin Aug. 22. Late registration
will continue through noon on Aug. 23. Drop/add will continue through noon on
Aug. 26.
Applications for Admission are available in
the Admissions Office located in the Student Service Building or on-line at
www.chipola.edu.
Chipola offers the Associate in Arts Degree, the
Associate in Science Degree and Workforce Development programs. Bachelor’s
Degrees in Education include majors in Middle and High School Math or Science,
English Exceptional Student Education and Elementary Education. A Business
Administration degree is available with concentrations in Management or
Accounting. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree also is offered.
The college also offers the Educator Preparation Institute, a Teacher
Certification program for those with a B.S. in a non-teaching field.
Chipola’s most popular program continues to be the Associate in Arts (A.A.)
degree which is designed for students who plan to complete their first two years
of college work and then transfer to a four-year program at Chipola or another
college or university. Credits earned are transferable and are applicable
toward a bachelor’s degree. Curriculum guides that outline requirements for
specific majors are available from Student Services and are located on the

MARIANNA—Season tickets for the 2011-12 Chipola Artist Series go on sale Monday,
Aug. 22, in the lobby of the McLendon Fine Arts Building. Individual tickets for
the first performance go on sale Aug. 29 in the college Business Office.
The highly acclaimed four-event series opens
Sept. 11 with a Sunday afternoon matinee at 2 p.m. in the Chipola
Theatre.
“Artistic Reflections”
presented by the Chipola College Music and Theatre Faculty will honor
Joan Stadsklev, the retiring Associate Dean of Fine and Performing Arts. A
memorable afternoon of music ranging from classical to modern will feature
pianists Dr. Christine Yoshikawa and Dr. Josh Martin, Dr. Daniel Powell,
saxophone, Adam Larison, guitar, Angie White, vocalist, Charles Sirmon, Theatre,
and others. Concert-goers are cordially invited to attend a reception in
the Arts Center hosted by the Chipola Regional Arts Association honoring
Stadsklev and her talented faculty and staff.
“Songs and
Stories of the Civil War” presented by Bobby Horton
will transport you back in time to the most
turbulent era in our nation’s history. Dressed as a 19th
century performer, using period musical instruments, Horton explores the stories
of both the North and South through the music they loved with each song placed
in historical context. Horton has produced and performed musical scores for
eight Ken Burns PBS films, including “The Civil War’ and “Baseball.” The
performance is Monday, Jan. 30, 2012,
at 7:00 p.m.
“Fused Tutu” a mixed dance
repertoire program presented by Dance Alive, the National Ballet Company, will
fill the Chipola stage on Sunday afternoon
at 2 p.m. on March 18, 2012. Ranging from classical ballet to
physically outrageous contemporary dance, from Bach to African music, the
program starts with a roar and never slows down. The show is sponsored in
part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs,
the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the National Endowment for the
Arts.
“The Whiffenpoofs,” the oldest
and best-known collegiate a cappella all-male singing group will perform
Thursday, April 26, 2012, at 7 p.m.
These 14 senior Yale University men carry on a tradition begun in
1909. The Whiffenpoofs have performed in Lincoln Center, the White
House, Carnegie Hall, the Rose Bowl, and on television shows The Today Show,
Saturday Night Live, 60 Minutes, and NBC’s The Sing-Off to name a
few.
The Chipola Artist Series is funded through Chipola's Performing Arts Fund, with
grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Southern Arts Federation,
the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Chipola Regional Arts Association
and corporate donors.
Season tickets—$40 for all four events—entitle holders to same seat reserved
seats, invitations to the "Meet The Artist" receptions, subscriptions to the
CRAA arts calendar, and early ticket-renewal next year. A limited number of
individual event tickets—$12 for adults and $8 for ages 18 and under—will be
available prior to each performance at the Chipola Business Office.

FINISH SIMULATION MODELING CLASS—Five
students recently completed Chipola College’s first Simulation Modeling (3-D)

Scholarship was recently established at Chipola College to honor Jack, Mary
Madge and Janice Hinson, all natives of Jackson County who are buried in the
Campbellton Baptist Church Cemetery. Relatives Kenneth Anderson (right) and JJ
Gilbert (left) recently presented the first Hinson Scholarship to Sarah Wade, a
single parent of two now attending Chipola. Anderson and Gilbert are nephews of
Jack Hinson. As benefactors of the Hinson estate, they established the
scholarship in memory of the Hinson family.

SMALL BUSINESS SEMINARS SET AT
CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer a series of small business seminars in the
coming months.
On Friday, Sept. 16, a seminar entitled, “Steps
to Starting a Business” will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Participants will learn about organizational requirements and licensing for a
small business in Florida, personal financial assessments, credit checks,
defining customers, location considerations, and employee requirements.
On Oct. 7, a seminar entitled, “How to write a
Business Plan,” will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will
learn to create an impressive, professional business plan to get it right the
first time. Participants also will review a software program and walk
through the business plan process.
“Starting Your Own Restaurant Business” is set
for Oct. 21. Marketing Series, Part 1: Introduction to 21st Century
Marketing is Nov. 4 and Marketing Part 2 Marketing on the Internet and
Using Social Media is Dec. 2.
The workshops will meet in Room M-108 of the
Chipola Business and Technology building. Cost of each seminar is $30.

MARIANNA—Chipola
College’s annual Select Baseball Showcase, is set for Saturday, Sept. 17, at the
Chipola field.
The event is open to all high school
sophomores, juniors or seniors who are current members of a varsity baseball
team.
Chipola head coach
Jeff Johnson says, “This is a great opportunity for players to showcase their
skills and to gain national exposure while being evaluated by JUCO and Division
I coaches, as well as professional scouts.” Johnson says he is expecting
from 50 to 100 pro and college scouts to attend.
Check-in opens at
8 a.m. on Sept. 17. The event will continue rain or shine with indoor facilities
available.
Skill evaluation
for running, hitting and fielding begins at 9 a.m. with skill evaluation for
hitting, pitching
and catching to
follow. Players should wear baseball pants and bring their own bats, spikes,
gloves, hats and protective cups.
Registration deadline is Sept. 14. Participants must provide proof of insurance and sign a waiver of liability. Cost is $100.

HELPS CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Altrusa
International of Marianna recently donated $2,500 to the Chipola College
Foundation for the club’s annual scholarship awards.
Altrusa sponsors an annual
award to a female student from Jackson County who is returning to Chipola in an
effort to secure advancements in her chosen career. The scholarship can be
applied toward tuition, books, and items required for coursework. The
scholarship was divided for the 2011-12 academic year between Amy Rehberg
($1,000) and Rhonda Johns ($500), both nursing majors at Chipola.
The club also awards a
scholarship to a returning woman in a literacy- related field. That award
was presented to Rebecca Hart ($500) who is majoring in Elementary Education.
In addition to the
individual scholarships awarded this year, the Altrusa club also made a $500
donation to the Vivian Ford Scholarship fund at the Chipola Foundation. Donna
Ford Rogers, Vivian’s daughter, is a long-time member of the Altrusa club.

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED CELLIST IN CONCERT AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College
will feature a special event on Thursday, Sept. 1, in the Chipola College Chapel
featuring Russian virtuoso cellist Alexei Romanenko performing a program
presented by the Department of the Fine and Performing Arts.
Romanenko will present a
recital of the complete cycle of Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental,
unaccompanied Six Solo Cello Suites. The six works will be presented in an
extended afternoon program from 2 p.m to 3 p.m. followed by a short
intermission, and continuing from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The concert is free and open
to the public. Donations are welcomed in support of our visiting artist.

LAUNCHES Pivot Point Learning IN NEW SHOP
The Pivot Point OLS, created from Pivot Point’s Designer’s Approach library,
will allow students to access information at any time and from anywhere as they
pursue their studies and prepare to take state board examinations.
“We want students to be able to study and learn wherever they are and use tools
they are familiar with,” said Chipola Cosmetology instructor Paige Vanderwerf.
“Our students are comfortable with the virtual world and the Pivot Point system
provides an online environment where they can continue their studies at home or
on the go. This tool provides all the information in one place as well as
the flexibility students need to be more successful in their studies and
careers.”
With Designer’s Approach online, students can take quizzes and track their
day-to-day learning and comprehension. Students also have access to
ebooks, videos, an interactive glossary, and educators have access to teacher
support material. Additionally, the video content is available on iPhone,
iPod Touch, and the iPad.
In addition to a new virtual environment, Cosmetology students also have a new
shop with all the furnishings of a full-service salon. The program is housed in
the new $3.3 million Workforce Development building which opened earlier this
year. In addition to 20 student work stations, the space also includes a facial
room, a manicure/pedicure room and a customer-friendly reception area.
Cosmetology is a 1,200 hour program which takes approximately one year to
complete. New students will be accepted into the program in January 2012, with
an orientation to be announced later this Fall.

THEATRE CELEBRATES FINAL SEASON ON OLD STAGE
MARIANNA—Chipola College Theatre director Charles Sirmon has scheduled three
great shows for the final season in the old theatre building. College officials
anticipate moving into the new $16 million Center for the Arts by August of
2012.
The 2011-12 season opens
with the Thornton Wilder favorite, “Our Town,”
Nov. 3-6. Our Town explores the lives of people living
in a small, quintessentially American town. It was first produced in 1938 and
received the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. The
play is divided into three aspects of the human experience: Daily Life, Love and
Marriage, and Death making it one of the most deeply human scripts in all of
American theatre. Auditions for “Our Town” are set for Sept. 6 and 7 at 6 p.m.
Chipola will present the hit musical, “Godspell,” Feb.
29, Mar. 1-4, 2012. Based on the book of
Matthew, “Godspell” is one of the biggest
Broadway successes of all time. “Godspell”
boasts a string of well-loved songs, led by the international hit, “Day By Day.”
As the cast performs “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons
Well,” “All For The Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My
Side,” the parables come humanly and hearteningly to life. “Godspell” is a
groundbreaking and unique reflection with a message of kindness, tolerance and
love. Auditions are Jan. 9 and 10.
The children’s show, “Finale” is set for May 10, 2012.
Created by Chipola’s long-time guest choreographer Chris Manasco, this will be
the last show in the old theatre. It’s time to move to the new theatre,
but someone forgot to tell the zany characters from past children’s shows.
Don’t be surprised to see Snoopy, the Three Little Pigs, or even Alice in
Wonderland in this high-energy show. The roller coaster of an adventure
weaves storylines and characters together in exciting and unexpected ways,
reintroducing the children to some of Chipola Theatre’s most memorable
characters. Auditions are March 12 at 5 p.m.
Reserved tickets for all shows are customarily on sale three weeks prior to
opening. Theatre fans also are invited to join the The Applauding Chipola
Theatre (ACT) VIP fund, which guarantees the best seats for all shows. The ACT
Fund offers five levels of membership including Sponsor, Patron, Benefactor,
Angel and Corporate Angel with VIP seating available at all levels. A portion
ACT memberships are tax-deductible.

CHIPOLA CAREER EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
She has served as a Staff Assistant in the college’s Admissions and Records
Department in Student Affairs since 2010.
Flowers says, “Chipola is a wonderful place to work. I was welcomed right
from the start and feel like I’ve come home. Students are a joy to work with,
especially when they have such a passion for their education.”
Her supervisor Dr. Jayne
Roberts, says, “Katy is a team player and willingly takes on new
responsibilities and challenges in the Admission and Record’s Office. Her
well-developed sense of customer service makes her a hit with the students and
the staff! She is a ‘keeper’.”
Flowers is an active member of Chipola’s chapter of the Association of Florida
Colleges and the Chipola Career Employees Association.
She enjoys baking
cakes and is active in the Christian Center Church. Flowers has one child,
whom she says “is the light of her life.”
The Employee of the Year
award recognizes the exceptional work of Chipola's career service employees.
Candidates are nominated by fellow employees for exhibiting courtesy, motivation
and professionalism. Annual winners receive a $1,000 bonus, reserved
parking for a year, a one-year membership in AFC, and a $100 gift certificate
from the college Book Store.

PHI BETA LAMBDA ATTENDS NATIONAL CONFERENCE
ORLANDO—The Chipola College chapter of Phi Beta Lambda recently attended the PBL
National Leadership Conference in Orlando.
Students competed in business and technology objective and performance events.
Chipola PBL members, James Lewis, Katrina Messer, Tracy Scott and Barbara Wynn
won fourth place in the nation in the Parliamentary Procedure event. Chipola PBL
adviser, Vikki Milton, represented Florida as the host state’s Advisor of the
Year in the opening session’s “Parade of States.”
Regarding the conference,
Milton said, “The PBL National Conference is a first class, fast-paced, intense,
competitive, networking event. Our students exchange business cards with
corporate executives, get the edge on career-building, and meet hundreds of
college and university students from across the nation. They exchange
ideas, get focused on their career and see so many opportunities available to
them. I’ve been involved in PBL for four years and I’m continually amazed
at the impact this organization has on our students. “
Over 1,800 college and university students participated in a variety of business
and leadership workshops including “Becoming a Mover and a Shaker in the
Interviewing Room,” “Preparing for Management in a Global Setting,” “Ethical
Leadership,” “GMAT Strategy Session,” “CSI: Accounting,” and “The New Guerilla
Job Search in a Digital Age.” Students had the opportunity to network with
representatives from numerous corporations to explore career and graduate school
opportunities.
PBL is the college division of FBLA/PBL, the largest student leadership
organization in the world. FBLA-PBL’s mission is to bring business and education
together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and
career development programs. FBLA-PBL is on the leading edge of career and
technical education. Promoting business ethics is critical to the organization.
Chipola will host a PBL Kick-off Reception Wednesday, Sept 7, at 10 a.m., in
room M202. All interested Chipola students are invited to attend.

BUSINESS SEMINARS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer a series of small business seminars in the
coming months.
“Steps to Starting a
Business” is Friday, Sept. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants
will learn about organizational requirements and licensing for a small business
in Florida, personal financial assessments, credit checks, defining customers,
location considerations, and employee requirements.
On Oct. 7, a seminar entitled, “How to write a Business Plan,” will be offered
from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will learn to create an impressive,
professional business plan to get it right the first time. Participants
also will review a software program and walk through the business plan process.
“Starting Your Own Restaurant Business” is set for Oct. 21. Marketing Series,
Part 1: Introduction to 21st Century Marketing is Nov. 4 and Marketing
Part 2 Marketing on the Internet and Using Social Media is Dec. 2.
The workshops will meet in
Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology building. Cost of each seminar
is $30.

HOST HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL SHOWCASE
MARIANNA—Chipola College’s annual Select Baseball Showcase, is set for Saturday,
Sept. 17, at the Chipola field.
The event is open to all
high school sophomores, juniors or seniors who are current members of a varsity
baseball team.
Chipola head coach Jeff
Johnson says, “This is a great opportunity for players to showcase their skills
and to gain national exposure while being evaluated by JUCO and Division I
coaches, as well as professional scouts.” Johnson says he is expecting
from 50 to 100 pro and college scouts to attend.
Check-in opens at 8 a.m. on Sept. 17. The event will continue rain or shine with
indoor facilities available. Skill evaluation for running, hitting and fielding
begins at 9 a.m. with skill evaluation for hitting, pitching and catching to
follow. Players should wear baseball pants and bring their own bats, spikes,
gloves, hats and protective cups.
Registration deadline is Sept. 14. Participants must provide proof of insurance
and sign a waiver of liability. Cost is $100.
