MARIANNA--New students planning to enroll in Fall classes at Chipola
Junior College are encouraged to complete the application process prior to the
Aug. 7 deadline.
New student testing and returning student registration is Aug. 14. New
student registration is Aug. 15 and 16, with classes beginning Aug. 19.

Chipola’s open-door policy
guarantees acceptance to all students with a high school diploma. Testing is
required to enroll in certain academic courses.
Chipola
offers hundreds of college credit courses during the day and evening, and also
through independent study. The college offers the Associate in Arts (AA) degree,
a two-year program that guarantees acceptance to Florida’s 10 public
universities. Chipola also offers several Associate in Science (AS) and
Workforce Development programs that provide training for high wage jobs.
Chipola’s
University Center provides opportunities for students to pursue a number of
bachelor’s degree and advanced programs on the CJC campus. Registration is
ongoing for two new Florida State University programs—a full-time BS in
Business Administration and a part-time RN to BS in Nursing (BSN) degree—to be
offered at Chipola this Fall.
Registration also is ongoing for several University of West Florida (UWF)
programs offered at Chipola, including: BA in Criminal Justice; BA in Social
Work; BA in Special/Elementary Education; MS in Curriculum & Instruction, MS
in Ed. Leadership, Administrative Certification, Educational Specialist (EDS) in
Curriculum & Instruction, and Educational Doctorate (EdD) in Curriculum
& Instruction. A special registration for the Special/Elementary Education will be held Aug.
29-31 on the CJC campus.
CJC
will begin its own bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in the Fall of
2003.

MARIANNA--Chipola
Junior College sophomore Chrissie Prichard of Chipley for has been named a Phi
Theta Kappa Leader of Promise!
Prichard is one of only ten students to receive the award this year. She will be awarded $500 to facilitate completion of her associate degree. She also was the winner of the local PTK Leader of Promise award.
Prichard serves as Leadership Officer for the Chipola chapter of PTK, the
international honor society of two-year colleges. She also is co-captain of the
CJC Cheerleaders. Prichard plans to
transfer to the University of Florida to study Civil Engineering.
She is the daughter of David and Caren Prichard of Chipley.

MARIANNA--Chipola
Junior College officials will dedicate the college’s new Academic Hall of
Fame, Monday, Aug. 12, at 9:15 a.m., in the foyer of the CJC Literature/Language
Building.
Three
CJC alumni--Stephanie Crisp, Andrea Bruner and Cherra Pumphrey--were inducted as
charter members of the new Academic Hall of Fame earlier this year. Portraits of
the inductees will be unveiled during the dedication.
The Hall
of Fame recognizes CJC students who have earned national honors for their
commitment to scholarship and service. Crisp, Bruner and Pumphrey were each
named to the Community and Junior College All-Academic Team and were featured in
issues of USAToday.
The team highlights the top 40 of the more than 10 million community
college students in the U.S.
Crisp is
a 2002 graduate of Chipola and was the 2000 valedictorian of Graceville High. A
microbiology and cell science major, Crisp plans to transfer to the University
of Florida to pursue a career in dentistry.
Andrea
Bruner is a 2001 graduate of Chipola. The 1999 valedictorian of Chipley High, is
currently enrolled at the University of Florida. She plans to attend medical
school and specialize in obstetrics.
Cherra
Pumphrey is a 1999 graduate of Chipola. She
was the 1997 valedictorian of Marianna High and is currently enrolled at the
University of South Florida.
MARIANNA—Chipola Junior
College Baseball will host its first-ever High School Showcase, Saturday, Sept.
14, at the CJC field.
The event is open to all high
school juniors or seniors who are current members of a varsity baseball team.
CJC
head coach Jeff Johnson says, “This event is a great opportunity for players
to showcase their skills and to gain national exposure while being evaluated by
JUCO and Division One coaches, as well as professional scouts.”
Johnson says he is expecting from 50 to 100 pro and college scouts to
attend.
Check-in
opens at 8 a.m. on Sept. 14. Skill evaluation for running, hitting and fielding
begins at 9 a.m. Skill evaluation for hitting, pitching and catching begins at
12:30 p.m. Players should wear baseball pants
and bring their own bats, spikes, gloves and hats.
Registration
deadline is Friday, Sept. 6. Participants must
provide proof of insurance and sign a waiver of liability. Cost
is $75.

p.m., Aug. 22 through Dec. 5. This is the foundation course for
administrators/directors for minimum child-care licensing standards. Cost is $98

course satisfies Part II of requirements in the Childcare Standards, Chapter

will meet Sept. 7 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course satisfies Part III of the HRS

MARIANNA--The Chipola Junior College
Theatre Department will hold open auditions for the hit comedy, “You Can’t
Take It With You,” Aug. 26 and 27, at 6 p.m. in the CJC Theatre. The show
opens a four-day run, Oct. 17.
Charles Sirmon, CJC Theatre Coordinator
says this is the largest cast for a comedy he has directed at CJC.
“As the department continues to grow so must our shows with
nine men and seven women needed with three male extras,” said Sirmon.
Scripts may be checked out in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building.
The hit comedy by Moss Hart and George S.
Kaufman is one of the most popular and successful plays of modern times.
At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it
is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is
madder. In contrast to these
delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The
plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with
Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong
evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food,
shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question.
The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic with Alice, find it hard to
realize her point of view. Meantime,
Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give
her up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the
Sycamores, particularly since he happens in during a visit by an ex-Grand
Duchess, earning her living as a waitress.
No mention has yet been made of the strange activities of certain members
of the household engaged in the manufacture of fireworks; nor of the printing
press set up in the parlor; nor of Rheba the maid and her friend Donald; nor of
Grandpa’s interview with the tax collector when he tells him he doesn’t
believe in the income tax.

FSU TO OFFER BUSINESS DEGREE AT CJC
MARIANNA-- Beginning in the Fall
semester, Florida State University will offer a BS in Business Administration on
the Chipola Junior College campus.
In
addition, FSU will deliver a part-time RN to BS in Nursing (BSN) degree
face-to-face at Chipola. Faculty
from FSU’s nationally-recognized and accredited Schools of Business and
Nursing will teach the course and graduates will be awarded FSU degrees.
Information Sessions for both
degrees will be held Thursday, Aug. 15, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in L-400 at Chipola.
Students planning to enroll in the Fall 2002 semester or who may be interested
in enrolling at a later date are encouraged attend. FSU classes begin Aug. 26. Students should bring

MARIANNA—U.S. Congressman Allen
Boyd will visit the campus of Chipola Junior College Thursday, Aug. 22, at 10
a.m., to announce the award of a $950,000 Department of Education Talent Search
grant intended to encourage area middle and high school students to prepare for
college.
District school superintendents, principals and guidance counselors are
expected to attend the meeting in Chipola’s Public Service Building.

Clean Sweep for CJC Cheerleaders
MARIANNA--The Chipola Cheerleaders returned home with an armload of
awards from the recent UCA College Cheerleading Camp at Embry Riddle University
in Daytona Beach.
Chipola
received a “Superior” ribbon for each of their daily evaluations in the
Fight Song, Sideline Cheer, and Cheer categories.
Chipola competed against other junior college and university squads in
the same categories, placing first at each level.
CJC
also won the Leadership trophy, which is awarded to the squad that the other
squads picked as the squad they would most rather be on besides their own.
Finally, camp staffers picked the Chipola Cheerleaders as the Most
Collegiate Cheerleading Squad.
Coach
Geraldine DeFelix attributes the squad’s success to their unity and teamwork
and to their excellent preparation at the high school level. “The cheerleader programs in the Chipola District are very
strong, and the top-notch cheerleaders that come to CJC are eager to hone their
skills and climb to even greater heights,” said DeFelix.
The
squad learned several new cheers, chants, dances, as well as stunts and
pyramids. Cheerleaders are busy planning a routine for Chipola Senior
Day in October, in addition to preparing for basketball season in November.
The cheerleaders also will appear in a number of area parades this Fall.
The squad will be sporting a new
look with an updated uniform as they work to involve the crowd at ball games
this season.

Sirmon,
who is beginning his fourth year at Chipola, said, “The Tony’s are the best
of the best in the theatre world and to be a part of it in a small way is very

will present the classic comedy “You Can’t Take It With You” this Fall and
the Broadway musical “Big River” in the Spring. Auditions for “You Can’t

MARIANNA--Season tickets for the 2002-03 Chipola Artist Series go on sale
Aug. 30 in the Business Office in the Administration Building at the college.
The four-event series opens with American violinist Linda Wang, Monday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. Wang has been praised among the premier young violinists of the world for her masterful technique and singing and jubilant tone. She has won recognition from the music world as grand prize-winner of the International Markneukirchen Instrumental Competition in Germany among numerous other accolades. Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of nine, Wang has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras in the U.S. and Europe, such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchestra under Sir Georg Solti, Paris Sinfonietta, Vogtland Philharmoney (Germany), and Southern Bohemia Philharmony (Czech Republic).
As soloist, she has performed in such musical centers as Carnegie
Hall, Beurs van Berlage (Amsterdam), and the Berlin Schauspielhaus.
Her live performances have been televised nationally for PBS and A &
E and National Public Radio.
The native New Yorker studied at the Juilliard School (Pre-College
Division), and the University of Southern California.
She studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg on the Fulbright Grant.
Her principal teachers have been Dorothy DeLay, Alice Schoenfeld, and
Ruggiero Ricci.
Manhattan Rhythm Kings, the second offering of the series, is set for
Monday, Nov. 18. Known for their polished performances of American popular music
from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, the Manhattan Rhythm Kings have gained a
large and enthusiastic following across the county.
While frequently compared with such musical greats as the Mills Brother
and Paul Whiteman’s Rhythm Boys, the trio has established a unique character
of its own with a combination of close harmony singing, virtuosic instrumental
work and spectacular tap dancing. The
Rhythm Kings began performing together on the sidewalks of New York in 1980.
From there, these song and dance men graduated to playing cabarets,
colleges and concert halls across the country.
Soprano
Alison England, hits the CJC stage Tuesday, Jan. 21.
This stellar singer/actress/comedienne has
starred
at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, The Dorothy Chandler More Pavilion, The
Orange County Performing Arts Center and Ambassador Auditorium.
She has appeared with the Los Angeles, Miami, Honolulu, Pacific, Miami
and Redlands Symphonies and has sung leading roles with the Seattle, Miami, St.
Louis, Long Beach and Kansas City Operas. She
has starred in “The Sound of Music,” “The King & I,” “Hello
Dolly.” Her One Woman Show “Opera, Broadway & Beyond” has recently
toured the U.S. This year she finished her second season as a featured
operatic artist on ABC’s Dharma & Greg; can be seen in Sky-Tel’s
national commercial as “Brunnehilde,” and is sought after as a recitalist
and artist-in-residence around the county.
Her debut album “Harp & Soul” is due for release this summer. Her shows blend the power, pathos and pizzazz of Broadway,
Opera and Pop’s best with infectious humor and warmth that The Anaheim
Bulletin raved “…held the audience in the palm of her hand…”
Boston Brass--the final offering of the series--is set for Thursday,
April 3. One of the most exciting
and multi-faceted brass groups in the county, Boston Brass performs concerts
that range from opera arias by Mozart, chorales by Bach, hot jazz from Ellington
and Hancock, and a little barbershop style close harmony from these five
musicians who are a adept vocally as they are instrumentally.
With numerous awards, including the 1992 International Brass Quintet
Competition, the 1990 Yellow Springs National Chamber Music Competition, and the
1988 and 1989 Rafael Mendez International Brass Quintet Competition, Boston
Brass is a must see for music lovers everywhere. The Rapid City Journal
says, “A quintet of versatile musicians who richly earned the standing ovation
they received at the end of their excellent and entertaining program.”
The Chipola Artist Series is funded through Chipola’s Performing Arts
Fund, and with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Southern
Arts Federation, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Chipola Regional
Arts Association, corporate donors, and through ticket sales.
Season tickets--$40 for all four events—are available at the Business
Office in the Administration Building. Season tickets entitle holders to same
seat reserved seats, invitations to the “Meet The Artist” receptions,
subscriptions to the CRAA arts calendar, and early ticket-renewal next year. A
limited number of individual event tickets will be available prior to each
performance at the Chipola Business Office at $12 for adults and $8 for ages 18

MARIANNA—Chipola Junior College Baseball will host its first-ever
High School Showcase, Saturday, Sept. 14, at the CJC field.
The event is open to all high school juniors or seniors who are
current members of a varsity baseball team.
CJC
head coach Jeff Johnson says, “This event is a great opportunity for players
to showcase their skills and to gain national exposure while being evaluated by
JUCO and Division One coaches, as well as professional scouts.”
Johnson says he is expecting from 50 to 100 pro and college scouts to
attend.
Check-in opens at 8 a.m. on Sept. 14. Skill evaluation for running,
hitting and fielding begins at 9 a.m. Skill evaluation for hitting, pitching and
catching begins at 12:30 p.m. Players should wear baseball pants and
bring their own bats, spikes, gloves and hats.
Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 6. Participants
must provide proof of insurance and sign a waiver of liability. Cost
is $75.

MARIANNA—U.S. Congressman Allen
Boyd on Tuesday announced the award of a $950,000 Talent Search grant to Chipola
Junior College to help middle and high school students prepare for
college.
Funded
by the U.S. Department of Education, the five-year project will provide at least
$190,000 per year for the next five years.
The project, called Talent Search at
Chipola Junior College (TS@CJC) because of its
unique technology component, will begin later this year and serve about 700
students annually. According to college officials, public school participants
will be potential first-generation college students who have shown strong
potential for success and are recommended by faculty and counselors. A total of
3,500 students are expected to be served during the five-year grant period.
College staff will meet with counselors from each school in designing the
project.
TS@CJC will serve a large geographic area including all
five counties in the Chipola district: Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty and
Washington. Major components of the project include assistance for school
counselors by a part-time career and life planning specialist in each middle and
high school and creation of a technology link through a TS@CJC website from a state-of-the-art computer in each school.
Schools will provide office space and computer links for the project.
Strengths of the projects include plans for meaningful group activities
for each grade level, focused individual attention for students, and creating
ways to impact parents by enriching the lives of their children.
College personnel, county schools superintendents, principals, counselors
at all school sites, and a wide range of community leaders cooperated in
planning the project with more than 100 letters of support written in support of
the grant.
Dr. Gene Prough, CJC executive vice president, says, "We very much
appreciate Congressman Allen Boyd’s support of Chipola Junior College and the
Talent Search program. This project will put a college education within the
reach of many students in our local schools which should have a very positive
impact in our communities."

MARIANNA--The Chamber Chorus of Chipola
Junior College invites community singers to perform in the upcoming presentation
of Camille Saint-Saens’ “Christmas Oratorio” and John Rutter’s
“Gloria.”
The performance is set for Thursday, Dec.
5, at 7 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Marianna. Dress rehearsals are
scheduled for Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. Additional rehearsals are
scheduled for Oct. 28 and Nov. 11.
According to Dr. Ed Lyon, Chamber Chorus
director, “The chorus is open to community members who might wish to
participate. It is not necessary to attend all rehearsals, but chorus members
are encouraged to attend as many as possible.”

MARIANNA—Wayne Herring of Marianna was recently chosen Chipola Junior
College's Career Employee of the Year for 2001-02.
Herring serves as Maintenance Repairman in the Physical Plant. He began
working at CJC in 1980.
Herring is a member of the Chipola Career Employees Association and has
served on the Governance Council and various college committees. As a winner of
the award, he was appointed to serve on the Career Employees Awards Committee.
He says, "I’m honored to
receive this award. I work
alongside five of the best guys anywhere. Even though I received this award
individually, I feel that my co-workers received it as well because we work as a
team. Since two employees in the Physical Plant have won this award in the past
two years, I think that speaks highly of our department."
Sonny
Wise, director of Physical Plant, says, "Wayne is a very valuable employee
who keeps a lot of things working on campus. His good attitude helps make our
work a lot more enjoyable."
In his spare time Herring enjoys officiating high school football and
basketball games. He also serves as a deacon at Bethel Star Missionary Baptist
Church. Herring and his wife Regena, a teacher at FCI, have a son Maurice, a
site manager for the About Face program in Jacksonville.
The Employee of the Year recognizes the
exceptional work of CJC's career service employees. Candidates are nominated by
fellow employees for exhibiting courtesy, motivation and professionalism.
Annual winners receive $1,000 bonus, reserved parking for a year, a

MARIANNA--Again next summer, a group of students and
adults will travel to Europe from Chipola Junior College.
The summer 2003 trip will include visits to Verona
and Venice in Italy, Lucerne, Switzerland and Paris, France.
Organizer of this tour, Robert Ivey of the CJC Social Sciences
Department, says, “This tour will include some of the most popular sites
visited on previous tours.” The
11-day tour will run June 18 through 28, 2003.
In addition to stops at sites of interest, a Swiss
folklore show and dinner is included in Lucerne, Switzerland, as well as dinner
in the famous L’Altitude restaurant in the Eiffel Tower in Paris. An optional
evening is also planned at the Moulin Rouge in Paris.
Cost of the tour is approximately $2,800, with a
discount for early reservations.

Equivalency (FTE), an average calculation of the number of hours students take,
is up more than eight percent to 479, compared to 442 last Fall.
CJC
president Dr. Dale O'Daniel says, “We’re very excited about the increase. I
believe that we have been responsive to the needs of our students.” The
president pointed to three programs that positively affected enrollment: (1) a
new program for local school paraprofessionals; (2) the new Partners program (a
high school recruiting/advising effort); and (3) expanded university offerings
on campus.
A
total of 80 paraprofessionals from three county school districts--Holmes,
Jackson and Washington--enrolled in a new program established by CJC officials
in response to requirements of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act.
Paraprofessionals (teachers’ aides) who work in schools that receive Federal
Title I funding are required to earn the equivalent of a two-year associate’s
degree by January 2006. CJC offers
a number of afternoon courses just for the paraprofessionals.
As
part of the new Partners with CJC program volunteers from the college visited
the 16 high schools in the district for several hours each week last spring. The
volunteers met with hundreds of students to share information about college
major requirements, registration and
financial
aid. College officials reported
increases in college applications, and applications for Foundation scholarships.
Some 720 students received more than $547,000 in aid from the Foundation.
The
presence of four- year degree programs at Chipola also has positively affected
enrollment. Dr. Kitty Myers, Dean of University programs at CJC, says, “Many
university center students must take pre-requisites at CJC to prepare for
four-year programs. This is especially true for students preparing for FSU’s
anticipated Business Administration degree and Chipola’s own four-year degree
in Secondary Education that begins in Fall 2003.” An estimated 300 students
are currently enrolled in university programs offered on the CJC campus.
Students
may continue to register for many of Chipola's Workforce Development programs
and Continuing Education courses throughout the semester.

MARIANNA—Chipola sophomore Nick
Williams has signed with the University of Cincinnati Bearcats.
The 6-4 combo, guard transferred to Chipola in May from Kansas State
University. Chipola Coach Ryan Cross, said, "Nick has a chance to be not
only one of the best guards in the Panhandle Conference this year, but one of
the best guards in the country. He'll play both point and shooting guard for Chipola, but mostly
point.”
The native of Arlington, Texas, played in all 29 games, including 25
starts for Kansas State last year. He
averaged 9.0 points and 2.5 assists, while shooting 46 percent from the field
and 74.7 percent from the free-throw line.
He posted a career-high 19 points vs. North Texas on December 15, 2001
and scored in double figures 13 times, including five of the last six contests.
In the Big 12 Tournament, Williams posted back-to-back double figure
games by scoring 16 points vs. Baylor and 15 points vs. NCAA Final Four
participant Oklahoma.
As a high school senior, Nick was tabbed the 8th best recruit in the
state of Texas by texashoops.com after averaging 17.6 points per game for
Mansfield High School. He was also
a first-team All-District selection and second-team All-State choice as a
senior.
Williams will join another former CJC player,
6'8 Kareem Johnson, who
signed with Cincinnati last spring.
