CHIPOLA ALL-AMERICAN RED ROBBINS STRICKEN WITH CANCER

MARIANNA—Chipola College officials recently learned this week that former ABA All-Star Austin “Red” Robbins has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Robbins visited the Chipola campus in March for a ceremony during which his number 14 Chipola jersey was retired.

The 6’8 Robbins led the Indians to a state championship in 1964 and back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament in 1963 and 1964. He was named to the JUCO All-American team in 1964.

Milton Johnson, who coached Robbins at Chipola, said, “Robbins is a very special person, and I know that many of Red’s friends would want to wish him well during this time.”

Robbins is arguably one of the best players to ever wear a Chipola jersey. His school scoring and rebounding records have stood for 40-plus years. He scored 1,361 points over two seasons at Chipola and averaged 27 points per game his sophomore year. Robbins played for the University of Tennessee where he was an All-Southeastern Conference selection bringing his college career numbers to 2,031 points and 1,630 rebounds.

Robbins’ professional career included a year in the Italian league followed by eight years 1967-1975 in the ABA with five teams.

Robbins is hospitalized in the Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. The phone number is 504-897-7011. Cards may be mailed to Touro Infirmary, 3525 Prytania, New Orleans, LA 70115. Email messages may be sent by visiting www.touro.com

CHIPOLA DESIGNATED EDUCATOR PREPARATION INSTITUTE

MARIANNA—The Florida Department of Education recently designated Chipola College as an Educator Preparation Institute.

Dr. Kitty Myers, Vice President of Instruction and Baccalaureate Programs, says, “This is great news for anyone with a bachelor’s degree who is interested in entering the teaching field.”

The Educator Preparation Institute is a program for college graduates with a bachelor’s degree—in a subject other than education—who want to earn the credentials to become a Florida certified teacher.

Myers says the approximately year-long course of study offers programs leading to certification in four areas: math education, science education, exceptional student education and elementary education.

Students must complete from 19 to 25 semester hours of coursework as well as some field experience. Enrollees will work through all three portions of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination during the program. Those who successfully complete the program will receive certification from the Department of Education.

Perhaps the best news for aspiring teachers is the fact that Chipola pays the tuition through a Succeed Florida grant.

In addition to the Educator Preparation Institute for students already holding a bachelor’s degree, Chipola also awards bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics Education (6–12), Biology Education (6–12), Middle Grades Mathematics Education (5–9) and Middle Grades Science Education (5–9).  Tuition is free for these programs as well.

For information about the program, contact Dr. Myers at 850-718-2276.
