CHIPOLA SHINES AT STATE
AFC CONVENTION
MARIANNA—Chipola College was one of the most talked-about colleges at the
Association of Florida Colleges Annual Convention in Palm Harbor.
Chipola garnered numerous honors, including chapter recognition,
membership awards and leadership awards.
The Chipola Chapter was named a Platinum Chapter, the highest recognition
a chapter can receive for chapter activities and leadership. The Chipola Chapter
also won a membership award for having one of the highest percentages of full
time employees as AFC members.
Chipola’s Automotive Technology program was awarded the Occupational and
Workforce Education Commission’s Exemplary Practice Award.
Chipola Instructors John Gardner and Chase Vlieg and Executive Vice
President Dr. Jason Hurst presented the practice, “Time to Reinvent the Wheel”
at the conference. The practice
emphasized today’s evolving student and how workforce training and programs must
also change.
Chipola’s Public Relations Office also won three Exemplary Practice
Awards from the Communications and Marketing Commission.
The group was awarded a First Place Award for Specialty
Advertising/Promotion Items for the Center for the Arts Grand Opening bookmark
souvenir and Best Bang for the Buck Award for the 2011 Chipola Yearbook.
The PR Office also won a Second Place award for the redesign of the
Chipola Workforce Development brochure. Dr. Bryan Craven is the Director of the
Chipola Public Relations Office.
Evelyn Ward is the Publications Coordinator.
Several Chipola employees presented Educational Sessions at the
conference. Chipola English
professor Dr. Rachel West presented, “Employees as Donors: Who Are They and Why
Do They Contribute.” West’s
presentation highlighted her doctoral research on the giving patterns of state
college foundation donors. Her
research at three Florida state colleges showed that 40% of individual donors
were past and present employees.
Dr. James Froh, Dean of the School of Business and Technology at Chipola,
presented a session, “Faculty Teaching Online.”
Froh discussed different avenues for offering coursework online and
guidelines to help faculty be better prepared for the online classroom.
Publications Coordinator Evelyn Ward presented a session on “Creating
Your Leadership Growth Plan.” The
session included a study of leadership styles and the traits most used in them,
to help aspiring leaders decide which approach was best for their personal
growth.
Pat Barfield was honored with the Distinguished Service Member Award.
The award was given for her exceptional leadership and achievements at
the chapter, region and state level. Barfield, Departmental Staff Assistant for
Institutional Development and Planning, also serves as the Vice President-Elect
for Regions and Chapters and sits on the state Board of Directors.
During the convention, Immediate Past President Evelyn Ward was awarded
the highest honor the Association bestows, the Honorary Life Membership Award.
The award recognizes significant, long-term contribution to AFC and the
state college system. Ward also was
acknowledged by the Chipola Chapter as their Un-sung Hero for her service behind
the scenes.
Ward was also recognized as a member of the first class earning the new
AFC Certified College Professional certification.
The leadership program which began in February 2012 provides AFC members
with the opportunity to earn a designation related to their work as a college
professional, and exposes them to content and leadership experiences they may
not be able to obtain elsewhere. The
designation will be recognized not only by their college, but by the entire
Florida State College system.
Several Chipola employees will serve in state leadership roles next year.
Evelyn Ward will serve as the Awards Chair and Alice Pendergrass will
serve as chair of the Credentials Committee.
Both will sit on the state Board of Directors.
Dr. Jim Froh is Chair-Elect of the Communications and Marketing
Commission.
Also attending the convention from Chipola, were: Angie Tyler, Katy
Flowers, Kim Collins and Becky Davis.
AFC is a statewide organization open to all employees, retirees and
trustees of Florida's 28 state colleges.
AFC provides professional development opportunities for its members, and
represents the interests of community colleges before the Florida Legislature.
Today, all 28 of the state's public colleges support the work of the
Association as do nearly 9,000 individual employee and retiree members.

THREE ON
A STRING TO PERFORM FOR CHIPOLA ARTIST SERIES
MARIANNA—Three on a String,
a popular bluegrass, country and comedy group will perform at the Chipola Center
for the Arts, Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. This is the final event in the
Chipola College Artist Series.
Three on a String performs
all kinds of music - classic old standards, country, bluegrass, and folk mixed
with comedy and humor suitable for the entire family. Jerry Ryan, Bobby Horton
and Brad Ryan have been having a good time right along with their audiences all
over the country for over 40 years. The group has gained a wide following on the
convention, music festival, or a symphony pops concert circuit.
Three on a String’s show has
evolved into a well-timed, musically interesting and funny presentation. Their
three-part harmony has a unique and pleasing blend, from a heart-rending country
song to an unexpected a cappella rendition.
Tickets are available online at www.chipola.edu. Online tickets may be
printed at home, or with an order con¬firmation, will-call tickets will be
available at the box office the night of the show. The Center for the Arts Box
Office will be open from 2 to 5 p.m., April 4, April 8-10, and from 6 to 7 p.m.
on April 11.

MARIANNA—The Chipola College Theater is in rehearsal for the children’s
musical, "Alice in Wonderland," which will be presented to hundreds of
elementary school children in May. A
public performance is set for Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m.

BASEBALL IN THE THICK OF CONFERENCE RACE
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians picked up a big 5-4 win over Pensacola April 1.
Freshman
pitcher Michael Mader went seven innings and allowed just one earned run on six
hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.
The Indians
led 5-1 when Mader exited the game before the eighth, but the Pirates fought
back with three runs in the top of the eighth, taking advantage of an error, a
walk, and a wild pitch by reliever Mikel Belcher, and getting a two-RBI double
by Jake Swearingen to make it 5-4.
Taylor
Lewis came in for Belcher and eventually ended the inning by striking out Toby
Thomas with runners on the corners to preserve the lead for Chipola. Lewis came
back on in the ninth and retired the side in order to earn the save.
The Indians
got their first run of the game in the fourth when Ian Rice walked and scored on
a passed ball to make it 1-0. A solo home run by Taylor Eads in the top of the
fifth tied the game for Pensacola, but the Indians answered in the bottom of the
inning with a three-run shot by Luis Tunon off of reliever Matt Muench to make
it 4-1. Tunon struck again in the seventh inning with an RBI single to score
Cameron Gibson to give Chipola a four-run cushion.
Tunon
finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run, while Gibson was 2-for-4 with a run,
while Daniel Mars was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, and Rice walked four times
and scored twice.
With the
win, Chipola moved to 4-5 in the Panhandle Conference and stayed within a game
of second-place Gulf Coast State (5-4) in the standings.
The Indians will face the
Commodores in a three-game series with postseason implications, with the first
game slated for Wednesday, April 3, in Panama City at 5 p.m. Chipola hosts Gulf
Coast Friday, April 5, at 5 p.m., before finishing the series at Gulf Coast on
Saturday, April 6. The Indians travel to Darton April 8, and to Alabama Southern
April 9 before returning home to host Tallahassee Friday, April 12, at 4 p.m.

CHIPOLA SOFTBALL
TIED FOR SECOND IN CONFERENCE
MARIANNA—Chipola split a
double-header with Tallahassee on April 2 to put the Lady Indians in a tie with
Gulf Coast for second place midway through the conference season. Chipola scored
a 7-3 win in the opener, but the Eagles won game two, 9-1.
As of April 3, Northwest
(6-2) leads the league. Chipola (5-3) and Gulf Coast (5-3) are knotted at
second. Pensacola is (2-6) and Tallahassee is (2-6).
Chipola’s Mya Anderson is
the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Player of the Week.
Anderson, a sophomore from
Tampa, batted .700 (7-for-10) with four runs scored, one home run
and seven RBI in four games
during the voting period. Anderson hit safely in both games of
double-headers against Gulf
Coast and Pensacola. She was a combined 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI in
the March 26 games against Gulf Coast. She went 5-for-5, scored three runs,
homered and drove in five in a pair of games against Pensacola. Anderson was
also a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases last week.
Chipola is third in the FCSAA State Rankings. Gulf Coast is second.
Northwest is fourth.
The Lady Indians host Darton in a non-conference double-header, Saturday,
April 6, at 2 p.m. Chipola hits the road for three conference double-headers at
Northwest April 11, at Gulf Coast April 13 and at Pensacola April 16. Chipola
finishes the conference season at home Thursday, April 18, with a 4 p.m.
double-header against Tallahassee.

CONTRACTING SEMINAR SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College
will offer a seminar, on “Government Contracting,” Friday, April 19, from 9:30
to 12:30 p.m., in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology building.
Participants will learn to
identify government agencies and target marketing efforts to save both time and
money. Cost is $30. The first six
Chipola students to sign up will receive free admission.

SPRING ENSEMBLE CONCERT IS APRIL 16
MARIANNA—Chipola College will present its Spring Ensemble Concert
Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m., in the Center for the Arts.
The free concert will feature the Chipola Rock and Jazz Band directed by
Dr. Daniel Powell, and the Chipola Chamber Chorus and Community Chorus directed
by Dale Heidebrecht.
The Community Chorus will again join the Chamber Chorus singing in
Russian, German, Latin, and a little bit of English.
One piece has no word, but will feature Indian sounds. Another piece will
be in the original Bebma (Chibemba) language spoken in Zambia.
The Jazz Band will close the concert with music in the funk, swing, rock,
Latin, and popular styles. Director
Dr. Daniel Powell says, “These professional that have worked hard all semester
to raise the bar on this knock out concert.
These students have been stretched and pulled to reach the height of
their talent and will leave you wondering why you should ever travel out of your
back yard to find such master performances.”
This will be the final Chipola performance for many of the students who
will be graduating this semester.

CHIPOLA TO
HOST RIBBON-CUTTING FOR NEW SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
MARIANNA—Chipola College officials will host a Ribbon-Cutting and Open
House, Tuesday, April 16, at 4 p.m., to celebrate the opening of the new School
of Education Building.
Current and former teacher education students are expected to attend. The
public is invited.
Chipola Teacher Education graduates are serving in the K–12 schools
throughout the five-county district and in neighboring counties.
Several have won awards for teaching excellence in their respective
schools.
All 2012 graduates from Chipola’s Elementary Education, Science Education
and Mathematics Education programs who sought positions were hired by the
beginning of the 2012–13 school year. This continues a hiring trend that has
been consistent since Chipola graduated its first mathematics and science
teacher candidates in 2005.
In 2008, Chipola added new programs in Elementary Education and
Exceptional Student Education, followed by English Education in 2011.
In May, Chipola will graduate its first class of English Education
teachers.

MARIANNA--Some 200 students representing 11 area high schools
participated in the 29th annual Chipola College Math Olympiad on April 5.
Students competed individually on written exams in Algebra I and II,
Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus.
Teams competed in three Ciphering competitions and for Team Awards that are
earned through highest combined scores on the written exams.
For their hard work, the students earned certificates of participation
and were treated to lunch. The event
concluded with an awards ceremony in the college Arts Center.

LAMAR POLSTON TO
DELIVER CHIPOLA COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
MARIANNA—Chipola alumnus Lamar Polston will deliver the commencement
address at the Chipola College graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 2. The
ceremony begins at 7 p.m. (CST), in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
Parents, relatives and friends are invited to a reception immediately
following the ceremony.
More than 400
graduates make up the Chipola class of 2013.
They will join the ranks of more than 12,000 Chipola alumni.
Counted as members of the class are all who completed their degrees or
certificates from December of 2012 to May of 2013 or who will complete work
during the summer 2013 terms.
Lamar Polston
grew up in Graceville, where he graduated high school in 1970.
He graduated from Chipola College in 1972 and transferred to Florida
State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Administration, with a degree in Risk Management and Insurance.
Polston began his career in 1974 in
Tallahassee with Alexander & Alexander, which was the world's second largest
insurance broker. For the next 14
years, Polston held various sales and management positions, rapidly rising
through the ranks to become one of the firm's youngest branch managers.
He was selected to start the firm's first ever branch office from
scratch.
Polston was hired by First Union National
Bank in 1988. While at First Union,
he built an insurance brokerage operation, then transferred to its Capital
Management Division, where he managed securities and personal trust sales
forces. In 1995, Polston joined
Factory Mutual Insurance as a Division Sales Manager, where he worked until
retiring in 2007.
During his
career, Polston obtained the CPCU designation, was a lecturer at FSU's College
of Business, and taught numerous Sales and Sales Management classes at the firms
he worked for.
Lamar Polston and his brother Ricky
Polston, Justice of the Florida Supreme Court, addressed the Chipola College
Honors seminar in 2010.
Polston lives in
Tallahassee with his wife, Leslie, also of Graceville.
Lamar and Leslie have three children.
Kathryn is a nurse in Atlanta, where she resides with her husband and 3
year old son. John works for
Frito-Lay in Tallahassee, where he resides with his wife, 4 year old daughter
and 2 year old son. Brian is an
insurance broker for RT Specialty in West Palm Beach, and is engaged.

CRAA TO MEET THURSDAY, APRIL 16
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA) will host its
monthly meeting Tuesday, April 16, at Jim’s Buffet in Marianna.
The public is
invited to attend the Dutch-treat buffet luncheon which begins at 11:30 a.m. and
the program at noon.
The meeting will
feature presentations by area arts educators who have received mini-grants. Dr.
Daniel Powell, Executive Director of CRAA, says, “This is a powerful testament
to what a donation to CRAA can do for the community.
All funds received directly support local arts programs.
To continue and expand these programs, we need your help.”
CRAA is in the
middle of their fundraising campaign to fund next year’s programs and hopes to
increase their impact on the community.
Because of the
number of mini-grant awards, presentations will be divided between the April 16
and May 21 meetings.

CHIPOLA TO OFFER LIFEGUARD COURSE
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer the American Red Cross Lifeguard
Training course beginning May 3.
All interested
students must be 15 years of age on or before the first day of class.
The course requires a minimum of 32 hours of training in water rescue,
CPR and First Aid. Attendance is required for all class meetings.
Students must be
in good physical condition, able to swim 500 yards without stopping, able to
swim freestyle, breast-stroke and side-stroke. Students also must be able to:
retrieve a 10 pound brick from a seven foot depth, and tread water without hands
for two minutes.
A prerequisite swim test must be taken
prior to the course on May 3. There is no charge to take the test.
Course meetings
will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., May 6-9 and May 13-16, with the final test
on May 17.
Cost of the course is $200. Students must
register and pay the fee prior to the first meeting.

YOUNG ARTIST SHOWCASE APRIL
21 AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The
Chipola College Department of Fine and Performing Arts will host a Young Artist
Showcase Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m., in the Experimental Theatre of the new
Center for the Arts.
The concert will
feature Aaron Smith, piano; Anna E. Williams, piano; Daniel Kern, piano; Michael
Lingerfelt, piano; and Anthony John Marotta, saxophone.
The students are
enrolled in music courses at Chipola and Gulf Coast. These award-winning artists
open the 2013 Spring into Summer Concert season with works by Barber, Beethoven,
Chopin, Haydn, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and more.
The primary
mission of the Spring Into Summer series is to present the area’s finest local
chamber music ensembles and soloists on a Sunday Matinée during the spring and
summer months.
Concerts in this
series may range from classical offerings to modern. All concerts begin at 2
p.m., and admission is by donation.

SEMINAR SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer a
seminar, on “Government Contracting,” Friday, April 19, from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m.,
in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology building.
Participants will
learn to identify government agencies and target marketing efforts to save both
time and money. Cost is $30.

CHIPOLA SOFTBALL THIRD IN
CONFERENCE
MARIANNA—Chipola
split a double-header with Tallahassee on April 2. Chipola scored a 7-3 win in
the opener, but the Eagles won game two, 9-1.
As of April 10,
Gulf Coast (7-3) leads the league. Northwest (6-4) is second. Chipola (5-3) is
third. Pensacola is (3-7) and Tallahassee is (3-7).
Chipola is third
in the FCSAA State Poll. Gulf Coast is first. Northwest is tied for fifth.
Chipola hits the road for three
conference double-headers at Northwest, April 11, at Gulf Coast, April 13, and
at Pensacola, April 16.
Chipola finishes
the conference season at home Thursday, April 18, with a 4 p.m. double-header
against Tallahassee.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL THIRD IN CONFERENCE
MARIANNA—As of
April 10, Chipola (5-7) is third in the Panhandle Conference standings. Gulf
Coast (8-5) is second. Tallahassee
(12-1) leads the league.
The Indians have four home games remaining in the conference schedule.
They host Tallahassee on Friday, April 12, at 4 p.m.; Northwest, April 17
at 5 p.m.; Pensacola, April 20 at 1 p.m. and Gulf Coast, April 22 at 5 p.m.
Chipola closes out the conference season on the road at Gulf Coast on
April 24. Chipola beat Alabama
Southern 8-5 on April 9.
The Indians
scored a big 4-2 win over Gulf Coast on April 6 in 10 innings. Chipola picked up
a big 5-4 win over Pensacola April 1.
Freshman pitcher Michael Mader went seven innings and allowed just one
earned run on six hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.
Luis Tunon hit 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run. Gibson was 2-for-4 with a
run.

CHIPOLA
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION GETS NEW HOME
MARIANNA—Chipola College officials cut the ribbon to formally open the
new School of Education on Tuesday.
The new building is home to the college’s five teacher education
programs: Elementary Education, Exceptional Student Education, Math Education
(5-9 and 6-12), Science and Biology Education (5-9 and 6-12) and English
Education.
Dr. Gene Prough, president of Chipola College, says, “We are very proud
of our Teacher Education program. I am happy that our students and faculty have
a new place to learn so that they can go out and teach the next generation of
students.”
Chipola’s old teacher education building was one of the oldest buildings
on campus and was short on space. The new School of Education features five
classrooms, an ample conference room, a computer lab, and a large gathering area
for students. Space in the common areas where students can work together has
more than tripled in the new building.
Chipola’s School of Education has been successful since the college first
began offering bachelor’s degrees in 2003. Since that time, more than 176
teacher education graduates have earned bachelor’s degrees. Most of those
graduates are teaching in the K–12 schools throughout the college’s five-county
district and in neighboring counties.
All 2012 graduates from Chipola’s Elementary Education, Science Education
and Mathematics Education programs who sought positions were hired for the
2012–13 school year. This continues a hiring trend that has been consistent
since Chipola graduated its first mathematics and science teacher candidates in
2005.
Dr. Lou Cleveland, Dean of the Chipola School of Education, says,
“Because of rigorous course requirements, Chipola teachers are classified as
‘highly qualified’ with many of them having both reading and ESOL endorsements
upon graduation. Our curriculum provides teachers with a strong foundation which
makes them valuable employees.”
Chipola Executive Vice President, Dr. Jason Hurst, says, “Chipola’s
School of Education is one of our very best programs. Our teacher education
graduates are highly qualified and effective. This is evidenced by the fact that
many of our graduates have been recognized as teachers of the year at the school
and district level.”
From seven students in 2004, the program has experienced tremendous
growth. By May, a total of 176 teacher candidates will have graduated from
Chipola. The majority of these have been employed in the five county
district; others have earned teaching certificates and positions in Alabama,
Georgia and Louisiana. There are 33 traditional K – 12 schools in
Chipola’s district. Thirty-one of these schools employ Chipola
graduates. The number is even higher when EPI participants are included.
Vernon High School’s entire math department is comprised of Chipola math
education graduates.
Chipola first began offering courses in Secondary Mathematics and Biology
in 2004 with seven students. In 2006, added Middle School Science and Middle
School Math. The Educator Preparation Institute was also approved
that year to serve non-education majors who were seeking teaching certificates.
In Fall 2008, Chipola began programs in Elementary Education and
Exceptional Student Education. The Early Childhood Certificate and
Associate in Science program also were moved under the newly named School of
Education this year. In 2011, English Education was added. Chipola’s first
English Education teachers will graduate in May.
Chipola offers the Bachelor of Science Degree, the Associate in Arts
Degree, the Associate in Science Degree and Workforce Development programs.

BRAIN BOWL FINISHES AS TOP COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN ICT
CHICAGO—With a 290-245 win over MIT in the last round of the
preliminaries, the Chipola College Brain Bowl team advanced to the championship
bracket of the DII ICT (Intercollegiate Championship Tournament) on April 13.
After finishing the initial round robin with a 6-1 record, Chipola became
only the second community college in history to make the championship round.
The teams qualifying for the championship bracket were: Stanford, Harvard, Yale,
Chicago, Illinois, Williams, MIT and Chipola.
Only the teams in the championship bracket were eligible to win the
tournament. Chipola coach Stan Young, said, “The Chipola team finished the
tournament seventh overall, but played valiantly in the bracket.”
Chipola lost to Yale 350-315, losing on the last question of the match.
Yale finished second overall in the tournament. The Chipola team also held their
own against Harvard, losing 385-310. With two questions remaining, Chipola had a
chance to win the match, but lost a couple of buzzer races to the Harvard team
which finished fourth overall. Stanford went undefeated to win the championship.
The Chipola team was awarded the Top Community College for the third year
in a row. Chipola team members are: Paul Kelson, Katelyn Miller, William
Singleton, and Becca Delgado.
Paul Kelson was the top individual scorer in the entire tournament. He
averaged 114.55 per 20 tossups heard. Kelson is only the third person in DII
tournament history to average more than 100 point per 20 tossups heard. The
other two individuals were Matt Jackson (Yale), and Neil Gurram (MIT). Young
said, “Paul Kelson will finish his career at Chipola as arguably the best
community college player in the history of the game.”
Young thanked his Chipola colleagues and the community for the support of
the Brain Bowl team. “I would just like to thank everyone for your continued
support of the Chipola team. So many of you have been so supportive, and I
really appreciate the interest you have shown.”
Earlier this month, Chipola broke a state record with six consecutive
state championships. The Brain Bowl team will be recognized at their own high
school tournament on Thursday, May 2, at 1:30 p.m. in Chipola’s Building Z.

WINS AT STATE PHI BETA LAMBDA BUSINESS CONFERENCE
ORLANDO—The Chipola College chapter of Phi Beta Lambda business
association took top honors at the recent Florida PBL State Leadership
Conference in Orlando.
Katrina Messer and Cathy Riddle won first place in the Small Business
Management Plan team event. Jeff Pitts, Sheetal Patel and Jessica Taylor were
the second place team in Hospitality Management. Nacole Thomas and Barbara Wynn
won third place in the Human Resource Management team event.
In individual competitions, Jeff Pitts won second place in Business Law
and fourth place in Management Concepts. April Harrison was third in Computer
Concepts. Barbara Wynn was fifth in Networking Concepts.
Chipola students competed with more than 400 students from colleges and
universities throughout the state in performance events, skill events and exams.
Chipola members also enjoyed VIP status and were recognized at all events
for their top participation and fund-raising efforts at last year’s competition,
earning them the coveted “Gold Membership Status.”
Qualifying students will compete at the national level this summer in
Anaheim, CA. Students attending the national conference will also participate in
numerous leadership and career development workshops to acquire cutting-edge
skills for today’s competitive business environment.
PBL is the college level division of FBLA-PBL, the largest business
career student organization in the world. Chipola Professor, Vikki Milton,
serves as the local chapter PBL adviser, Florida District I State Adviser, and
on the Florida FBLA-PBL Executive Board.

Cross-over class beginning May 20. Qualification deadline for all
materials is May 15.
The program will meet weeknights from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The course is 770
clock hours in length.
Chipola also offers an ongoing Basic Corrections academy with open
enrollment. Students may start within a week of qualification. Classes are
weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Candidates must be at least 19 years of age and earn a passing score on
the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT). Applicants must have a
standard high school diploma or its equivalent and must undergo a medical
physical examination, background check and drug screening. Financial Assistance
is available based upon need and eligibility.
The Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) is offered at the
Public Service Building on Chipola Campus every Tuesday at 12:30. Cost of
the test is $45.

representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Pictured from

BASEBALL IN SECOND PLACE
MARIANNA—Chipola moved into a tie for second place in the Conference with a 6-5
win over Northwest on Wednesday, April 17.
The win puts Chipola at 8-8 in league play. The top two teams in the
conference move on to the state tournament
May 10-14 in Lakeland. Tallahassee
has already captured the Panhandle Conference title.
Freshman pitcher Michael Mader got the win for the Indians and his fifth
straight league victory. He pitched
a thrifty 78 pitches in seven shutout innings, giving
up only three hits and two walks while striking out three.
The Indians scored four in the first with a two-RBI single by Chase
Nyman, and RBI doubles by Chase Scott and Josh Barber. Chipola added another run
in the fifth when Nyman singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Barber, and
scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by Bert Givens to plate Cameron
Gibson.
Chipola led 6-0 late the game, but the Raiders scored five in the eighth.
Preston Johnson came on for the Indians in the eighth giving up a one-out single
to Ben Craft, who moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another for
Northwest’s first run.
After a single by Vann Pitts, Kevin Knapp was hit by a
pitch and Chris Madera walked to load the bases.
Cole Evans came in to replace Johnson, but Northwest’s Nick Masonia hit a
grand slam to cut Chipola’s lead to one.
A single by Steven Jernigan and a walk to Scottie Peavey gave the Raiders
a chance to take the lead, but Evans got Brandon Harigel to ground into a 6-4-3
double play to end the inning. Evans retired the side in the ninth to end the
game.
Daniel Mars led Chipola offensively with three hits, while Nyman was
2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and two runs, Barber was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and
Gibson was 2-for-5 with two runs. Givens and Scott also had two hits each for
the Indians, who had 14 as a team.
The Indians scored a 6-1 win over Northwest on April 15. Chipola scored a
6-4 win over Tallahassee on April 12.
Chipola heads to Pensacola Friday, April 19.
The Indians have two home games remaining in the
conference schedule. They host Tallahassee Pensacola, April 20 at 1 p.m. and
Gulf Coast, April 22 at 5 p.m.
Chipola closes out the conference season on the road at Gulf Coast on
April 24.

CHIPOLA SOFTBALL MAKES STATE TOURNEY
MARIANNA—Chipola College (35-8) has clinched a spot in the FCSAA State
Softball Tournament set for May 2-5 in Pensacola.
The Lady Indians are ranked fourth in the FCSAA State Poll. Gulf Coast is
first. Northwest is fifth.
As of April 17, Gulf Coast (10-4) leads the league. Northwest (10-6) is
second. Chipola (9-5) is third. Tallahassee is (4-10). Pensacola is (3-11).
Chipola’s Eva Voortman is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball
Pitcher of the Week. A sophomore from the Netherlands, she was 2-0 with a 1.00
ERA in two appearances during the voting period.
On consecutive days, Voortman delivered complete-game wins against
nationally-ranked opponents. She beat NJCAA No. 16 Northwest Florida State 6-3
on April 12. On April 13, she tossed a 2-0 three-hit shutout against No. 4 Gulf
Coast State. For the week, Voortman tallied 14 innings in the circle and allowed
eight hits while striking out ten.
Voortman continued her dominance with a 13-2 win over Pensacola on April
16. Rosanne DeVries picked up the 10-2 win for Chipola in game two.
Chipola finishes the conference season at home Thursday, April 18, with a
4 p.m. double-header against Tallahassee.

Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, says, “These three young people are
not only some of Chipola’s best students, but they are three of the best in the
country. They have excellent academic records and outstanding records of serving
others. I am very proud that they chose to attend Chipola.”
Pam Rentz, Chipola English professor and Phi Theta Kappa adviser, says,
“We are so proud of the accomplishments of these students. Kaylee, Jessica and
John have helped so many people while maintaining excellent grades. We are very
proud of their service to the college and to the community.”
Toole began dual-enrollment classes at Chipola the summer before her
junior year at Marianna High School. She graduated from Marianna in 2011
as an honor graduate and top 10 in her class. At Chipola, she has been active in
Phi Theta Kappa, Honors Program, Pre-Med Society, Show Choir and Science Club.
During her time at Chipola she has been a part of two mission trips to
Nicaragua to help improve medical care and assist in building homes. On her
first trip, she noticed that most of the people she met did not have shoes. When
she returned to the U.S., she collected 300 pairs of shoes which delivered to
Nicaragua last summer. She has since collected more shoes which she will take to
Nicaragua on her third trip this summer. She also has served as a counselor at
Joni and Friends Family Retreat, watching over a special needs child.
Toole will graduate from Chipola this semester with an Associate in Arts
degree in pre-pharmacy. Toole said, “I decided I wanted to pursue a degree in
pharmacy after I fell in love with my job at Kelson Drugs, where I have been
employed for two years.” She plans to continue her studies at Lake Erie College
of Osteopathic Medicine’s School of Pharmacy. Toole also serves as a tutor in
the Chipola ACE Lab. Toole is the daughter of Steve and Melody Toole of
Marianna.
Jessica O’Keefe, a 2012 graduate of
Chipola College, is the recipient of the Hites Scholarship awarded by Phi Theta
Kappa Honor Society. The scholarship includes a $7,500 monetary award. In her
PTK service project, she helped raised funds, prepare and serve meals to 250
people at the Panama City Rescue Mission.
O’Keefe graduated from Chipley High in 2010. She is the daughter of
Connie Odom and the late Ron O’Keefe. She is currently enrolled at the
University of Florida majoring in Chemical Engineering.
John Whittington is a 2011 graduate
of Sneads High School where he graduated with honors. While at Chipola, he has
been a two-time nominee to Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.
He recently was awarded a transfer scholarship to Florida State University in
Panama City.
Whittington also was involved in the Chipola Science Club, Mu Alpha
Theta, Honors Club, and Phi Theta Kappa.
Through PTK John led a service project to renovate the
historic Hard Labor Creek Church in Washington County. Through a fund drive and
golf tournament, he raised $12,000 for the project. He also convinced area
contractors to donate time and labor for the renovation. To date, a new metal
roof has been installed, and windows and doors have been repaired. New pews and
a new podium were also installed. The exterior of the church has been painted
and new has been landscaping planted. A wheelchair ramp also has been installed.
A historical sign describing the history of the church is also in place. A
dedication ceremony was held last year at which donors celebrated the
restoration. This project helped him achieve the recognition of Second Team All
Florida for the Nu Chi chapter of PTK.
Whittington is the son of Steve Whittington and Stephanie Gleason.
After graduating from Chipola, he plans to continue his goal of becoming a civil
engineer at FSU/PC.

CHIPOLA
GRADUATION IS THURSDAY, MAY 2
MARIANNA—The Chipola College graduation ceremony is Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. (CST), in the Milton H.
Johnson Health Center. Parents, relatives and friends are invited to a reception
immediately following the ceremony.
More than 400 graduates make up the Chipola class of 2013. They will join
the ranks of more than 12,000 Chipola alumni.
Chipola alumnus Lamar Polston will deliver the commencement address.
Polston grew up in Graceville, and graduated from Chipola in 1972. He went on to
a distinguished career in the Insurance industry until his retirement in 2007.

MARIANNA—Tickets are now on sale for the Chipola College Theatre
children’s musical, "Alice in Wonderland," set for Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m.
The show also will be presented to hundreds of elementary school children
during several sold-out daytime performances.

OFFER LIFEGUARD COURSE
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer the American Red Cross Lifeguard
Training course beginning April 30.
All interested students must be 15 years of age on or before the first
day of class. The course requires a minimum of 32 hours of training.
Attendance is required for all class meetings. The course includes water rescue,
CPR and First Aid.
Cost of the course is $200. A prerequisite swim test must be taken prior
to the course. There is no charge to take the test. To schedule a test, call
718-2440. Course meetings will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., April 30,
May 1, May 7-10, with the final test on May 11.

COLLEGE BRAIN BOWL RECOGNITION AND HIGH SCHOOL BRAIN BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP
Chipola will host a high school Brain Bowl Tournament, Thursday, May 2,
in the college Literature/Language Building. The public is invited to watch the
(20 minute) Championship round at 1:30 p.m. At 1:50 p.m., high school awards
will be handed out, followed by recognition of Chipola’s Six-Time State
Championship Brain Bowl Team.

CHIPOLA’S PINKINS AND HALL MOVING UP TO NEXT LEVEL
MARIANNA—Two Chipola College men’s basketball players are moving on the
next level.
Marianna native Kruize Pinkins has signed with the University of San
Francisco. Pinkins averaged 11.4 points and 7 rebounds per game. He shot 58%
from the floor and 49% from three-point range. Pinkins also was recruited
by Murray State and Florida Gulf Coast.
The 6-foot-7 Pinkins will find a familiar face in San Francisco, as
former Chipola assistant Brent Crews now coaches there.
USF competes in
NCAA's
Division I
and is a member of the
West Coast Conference.
Terel Hall, a 6’0 guard out of Dawson, Georgia, has signed with Savannah
State University. Hall averaged 6 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds per game and
was considered a team leader. Hall was also recruited by North Carolina Central
and North Carolina A & T.
Savannah State is an NCAA Division I school in the MEAC Conference.
The Chipola Indians made it the first round of the FCSAA State Tournament
this season where they lost Central Florida who went on to win both the state
and national championships. Chipola finished the season as runner-up in the
Panhandle Conference with a 23-7 record.

BASEBALL HEADED TO STATE
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians captured second place in the Panhandle
Conference and earned a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament with a big 7-3 win
over Gulf Coast on April 22.
Michael Mader was the
winning pitcher.
The Indians won seven of their last eight outings including: a 7-6 win
over Gulf Coast on April 24; a 7-4 win over Pensacola on April 21; a 4-0 shutout
over Pensacola on April 18; a 6-5 win over Northwest on April 17; and a 6-1 win
over Northwest on April 15.
The top two teams in the conference move on to the state tournament,
May 10-14, in Lakeland. Chipola
will represent the Panhandle along with Conference Champion Tallahassee.
Chipola (35-19) will face Miami Dade (35-8) in the first round of the
FCSAA State Tournament, Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. (EST). A win would put
the Indians in a second round game, Saturday at 7 p.m., with the winner of State
College of Florida and Seminole. A loss in the double-elimination tournament
would move Chipola to the 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
The regular season league standings are: Tallahassee (16-4), Chipola
(12-8), Gulf Coast (9-11), Pensacola (7-13) and Northwest (6-14).
