Chipola brain bowl is best in state and Nation
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Brain Bowl team won Florida College System
Activities Association Brain Bowl State Tournament on March 24 and finished as
the top two-year college in Chicago at the National Academic Quiz Tournament
(NAQT) Four-Year College Tournament on March 31.
For the second year in a row, Chipola placed ninth overall in the 32-team
NAQT field of the best teams in the USA and Canada.
Chipola Brain Bowl Team members who played in the national tournament
are: Travis Bontrager, Paul Kelson, Annemarie Nichols and Caroline Peacock.
They are coached by mathematics professor Stan Young and volunteer, Dr. Robert
Dunkle.
Chipola also recorded the second highest finish by a two-year college in
tournament history. Chipola was one of only six two-year colleges in the
nation to qualify for the tournament and did so by going undefeated in the
two-year college national tournament in February to win its second consecutive
two-year college national championship.
Chipola’s 11-2 record, the second highest percentage record in the
four-year college tournament behind Harvard, included impressive wins over teams
from Carnegie Mellon, University of Chicago, Notre Dame, Maryland, Minnesota,
and Toronto. Chipola’s only two losses in the tournament were to Harvard, the
eventual champion, and Delaware.
Chipola’s Paul Kelson was the top scorer among all players in the 32-team
field. He answered 131 tossups, with 52 powers. Powers are awarded when a
player answers a question early to earn 15 points instead of the 10 points
normally awarded for a correct answer. Kelson averaged 81.48 points per game,
the highest average among both all Division I teams (including graduate
students) and Division II teams (only undergraduate students). Kelson is a
freshman and will be eligible, should the Chipola team qualify next year, to
play in both the two-year and four-year college national tournaments. Link to
NAQT statistics are available at:

Chipola won the Florida College System Activities Association Brain Bowl
State Tournament on March 24 in Orlando finishing the tournament with a big
825-275 win over Valencia Red.
The state championship is Chipola’s fifth in a row tying Broward as the
only other Florida team to win five straight state titles. Chipola Brain Bowl
Team members who played in the state tournament are: Travis Bontrager, Paul
Kelson, Annemarie Nichols, Caroline Peacock and Adrian Carr.
Chipola’s Paul Kelson was the Dave Ehlert High Point Award winner in the
tournament with 1145 points. Kelson was named to the All Star Team for the
tournament along with Travis Bontrager (Chipola, 355 points).
Chipola swept all three major awards in the state tournament including
championship team, high point player and Coach of the Year. Dr. Robert
Dunkle, a volunteer assistant coach for the Chipola team, was selected by his
fellow coaches to receive the Roger Raepple Coach of the Year award.

Chipola brain bowl
RECOGNIZED
MARIANNA— The Chipola College Student Government Association recently
hosted a Press Conference/Reception to recognize the academic accomplishments of
the Chipola College Brain Bowl team which won the Florida College System
Activities Association Brain Bowl State Tournament and finished as the top
two-year college in Chicago at the National Academic Quiz Tournament Four-Year
College Tournament.
Link to
NAQT statistics are available at:
www.naqt.com/stats/tournament-teams.jsp?tournament_id=3872&playoffs=1

CHIPOLA
RANKED IN TOP 10 PERCENT OF U.S. COMMUNITY COLLEGES
Chipola
Eligible For $1 Million Aspen Institute Prize
Washington, DC – Highlighting the critical importance of improving
student success in America’s community colleges, the Aspen Institute College
Excellence Program has named Chipola College as one the nation’s 120 top
community colleges, challenging it to compete for the $1 million fund for the
2013 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.
The Aspen Institute identified the 120 community colleges -- 10 percent
of all institutions -- using a quantitative formula that assesses performance
and improvement in four areas: graduation rates, degrees awarded, student
retention rates, and equity in student outcomes. These colleges will now
compete for the prestigious honor following a year-long research process into
how well their students learn, complete degrees, and get jobs with competitive
wages after graduating. A full list of the 120 community colleges is
available at www.AspenCCPrize.org.
Prize winners will be announced in March 2013.
Some seven million students – youth and adult learners – enroll in
America’s nearly 1,200 public and private community colleges every year. “The
success of our nation’s community colleges is more important than ever before,”
said Aspen Institute College Excellence Program Executive Director Josh Wyner.
“At a time when a college degree is essential to entering the middle class,
community colleges like Chipola offer the most promising path to education and
employment for literally millions of Americans. This competition
spotlights excellence and we encourage Chipola to apply for the nation’s top
community college prize to help raise the bar for all community colleges to
improve student achievement and better prepare the next generation for the job
market after college.”
Chipola and 119 other community colleges will be winnowed to eight-to-ten
finalists in September based on how much students learn, how many complete their
programs on time, and how well students do in the job market after graduating.
The college is now eligible to submit an application containing detailed data on
these criteria. It must demonstrate that it delivers exceptional student
results, uses data to drive decisions, and continually improves over time.
The Aspen Institute will conduct site visits to each of the finalists in
the fall. A distinguished Prize Jury co-chaired by John Engler, president of
Business Roundtable, former Michigan Governor, and former president of the
National Association of Manufacturers and Richard Riley, former South Carolina
Governor and U.S. Secretary of Education, will select a grand prize winner and
four runners-up, to be announced in March 2013.
“American employers have jobs open right now but lack enough skilled,
educated workers to fill them,” Engler said. “The job training programs at
community colleges must play a central role in filling those gaps and preparing
the American workforce. Community colleges’ success will help determine whether
and in what sectors America will continue to lead in the global economy.”
While every community college faces challenges, particularly in today’s
economic climate, Secretary Riley underscored the importance of improving
outcomes for community college students, the majority of whom are
underrepresented minorities, “Many community colleges across this country are
doing an excellent job of boosting student success, but we need to encourage all
community colleges achieve excellence. When students learn more, graduate or
transfer to four-year institutions, and get competitive-wage jobs after college,
it helps everyone - students, employers and our nation’s economy as a whole.”
Chipola College is designated as a state college in the Florida College

MINI-GRANT
RECIPIENTS TO PRESENT AT MAY 15 CRAA MEETING
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA) has a popular
mini-grant program that challenges music, art, and theatre teachers to use $200
grants to reach out to countless school children in the Chipola district.
On May 15 at 6 p.m. at Jim’s Buffet in Marianna, the public is invited to
see what a difference these funds can make in our community as mini-grant
recipients present their projects during the CRAA meeting.
This year’s mini-grant applications were particularly competitive and
only half of them were able to be funded. Since 2000, CRAA has given
$30,000 to area art, music, and theatre teachers who use the funds to support
art programs in the area schools. Dr. Daniel Powell, Executive Director of
CRAA, says, “This is a powerful testament to what your donation to CRAA can do
for the community. All funds received by CRAA directly support local arts
programs.” CRAA is in the middle of their fundraising campaign to fund
next year’s programs and hopes to increase their impact on the community.
Some school teachers have even committed to meeting at 5 p.m. before the meeting
to brainstorm ways they can promote the arts and do their part for these
important programs. During the April
17 meeting, school board members, corporate sponsors, and civic leaders attended
to hear the enthusiasm of these mini-grant recipients and how far this modest
amount goes to help area children.
All of those wishing to make a difference in the community are invited to
attend all or part of this event. For more information regarding the May
15 meeting, contact Dr. Daniel Powell at
powelld@chipola.edu or (850) 718-2257.

Chipola finished second in the State Tournament.
Coach Blake said, “I’m excited about the opportunity to lead the men’s

Kennedy at the University of Mississippi. Blake graduated from the University of
Louisville with a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing. At Louisville, he

appearance and an Elite Eight Appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Blake is a native of Evansville, Indiana, where his parents, Mike and
