SEMINARS SET FOR MAY 6 AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer two small business seminars on Friday, May
6.
The first five students to sign up for any seminar will receive free admission.

On Friday, May 6, a seminar entitled, “Marketing Series, Part 1: Introduction to
21st Century Marketing” will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Participants will learn to choose the best methods for marketing a business,
target a market audience, create a free web site quickly and easily, discover
which social media avenues are the best, and learn to optimize internet
presence.
Also on May 6, a seminar entitled, “Marketing Series, Part 2: Marketing on the
Internet and Using Social Media” will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Participants will discover the power of having a social media strategy and learn
to implement new marketing techniques, unlock the secrets of the top social
media sites and establish brands online presence.
Valerie Simmons, Certified Business Analyst, with the Small Business Development
Council, leads the seminars at Chipola. She says, “The Ultimate Business Plan
seminar helps new and existing businesses create a successful plan to ensure the
success of their business.”
The workshops will meet in

TEACHERS TO PRESENT AT
APRIL 19 CRAA MEETING
MARIANNA—The public is
invited to attend the monthly meeting of the Chipola Regional Arts Association,
Tuesday, April 19, at Jim’s Buffet and Grill in Marianna.
A Dutch-treat buffet
luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program at noon.
This month’s program will be given by teachers in the Chipola District who were the recipients of “Mini-Grants to Enhance the Arts” awarded by CRAA.
Seven of the 14 teachers
will share how they utilized their grants, including: Craig Bean, Marianna High
band director, who purchased music for woodwind, brass, and percussion
ensembles; Richard Bouton, Graceville High band director, who purchased
instruments for his percussion technique classes; Jill Cook, Vernon Middle
School drama teacher, who purchased music and materials for language and writing
classes and honor student projects; Richard Davenport, Roulhac Middle band
director, who purchased solo and ensemble music; Rebecca Dilmore, Cottondale
High band director, who purchased a digital audio recorder and condenser
microphone for students to improve their performances; Janet Edewaard,
Blountsown Middle School music and drama teacher, who purchased Sight-Singing
Books to enhance students music reading level, and Blountstown High for the
purchase for drawing pencils and paper for art classes; and Tina Smith, Altha
School music teacher, who received a grant to help with the music department’s
spring musical.

CAST ANNOUNCED FOR CHIPOLA
CHILDREN’S SHOW
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Theater is in rehearsal for the children’s play,
“Aesop’s (Oh-So-Slightly Updated) Fables,” which will be presented to hundreds
of elementary school children in May. A public performance is set for Thursday,
May 12 at 7 p.m.
The play weaves
six of Aesop’s most famous fables into a show that’s funky, fast-paced, and full
of surprises. The show features favorite tales, including: the Dog and the Bone,
the Tortoise and the Hare, the Lion and the Mouse, the Fox and the Grapes, the
Country Maid, and the Miller, His Son and the Donkey.
Chipola Theater director Charles Sirmon recently cast local actors in the
following scenes: The Dog and The Bone—Chris Holloway as Narrator 1, Deanne
Harrison as Dog, Steven Ozbun as Butcher, Alex Parrish as Girl, Kayla Todd as
Pond; Tortoise and The Hare—Dianna Glaze as Miss Hare, Joy Wallace as Miss
Tortoise, Trey McKay as Narrator 2 and Alex Parish as Girl; The Lion and the
Mouse—Austin Brockner as Reporter 1, Kelli Todd as Reporter 2, Sierra Hill as

AUDITION DATES FOR
CHIPOLA SCHOLARSHIPS IN THE ARTS
MARIANNA—Audition and
application dates have been set for Music, Art, and Theatre scholarships to
Chipola College for the 2011-12 school year.
Music Scholarship auditions
are April 21, and May 26. Theatre Scholarship auditions are April 21. The Visual
Art application and portfolio deadline is April 21.
The scholarships are
available to high school graduates with acceptable academic records and aptitude
in music, theatre, and art. Applicants who plan to pursue studies as music,
theatre or art majors are eligible to apply for scholarships. Music or
theatre students unable to meet one of the scheduled dates are asked to contact
Joan Stadsklev, Director of Fine and Performing Arts, to arrange an alternative
audition date.
Scholarships in various
amounts, up to full tuition and fees, are awarded on the basis of talent and
academic record. Students with financial need may seek additional
assistance through the college’s Office of Financial Aid and the Chipola
Foundation.

MARIANNA—The Chipola College
department of Fine and Performing Arts will present an afternoon of music for
the guitar performed by students in the department’s guitar program from the
studio of Adam Larison, Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m.
In settings for solo, duo,
trio and quartet, students will present a diverse program including Luigi
Boccherini’s elegant yet earthy Introduction and Fandango, the Brazilian
folk-inspired Preludes by Heitor Villa-Lobos, movements from Miguel
Llobet’s highly provocative “Catalan Folksongs,” as well as other works by
Couperin, Brouwer, Morel, Poulenc, Zarb, Tarrega and Mompou.
The concert will be held in
the college Chapel and is free and open to the public.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL HOSTS GULF COAST
MARIANNA—The Chipola baseball team
hosts Gulf Coast, Friday, April 8, at 2 p.m., and Monday, April 11, at 5 p.m.
The Indians play at Gulf Coast April 9.
The Indians are ranked fifth in the FCSAA State Poll.
Chipola is 9-3 in the Panhandle Conference play and 26-14 overall. Northwest
Florida is 10-4. Pensacola is 6-8. Tallahassee is 5-9 and Gulf Coast is 4-10.
Chipola hosts Northwest on
Friday, April 15, at 2 p.m. The Indians play at Northwest, Wednesday, April 13
and Saturday, April 16.
Chipola swept Pensacola in a recent three-game
series. The Indians beat Pensacola 10-3 on April 1 behind the pitching of Robby
Coles. Chipola slipped by Pensacola 4-3 on March 31. Luke Bole was the winning
pitcher. Chipola scored an 18-14 win over Pensacola on March 28.
The Indians swept Tallahassee in a three-game set.
Chipola beat Tallahassee 6-2 on March 26. The Indians whipped Tallahassee 11-6
on March 25 with Luke Bole picking up the win for Chipola. Chipola beat
Tallahassee 4-3 March 23. Matt Marsh earned the win for Chipola. Derick Pitts had 2 RBI for the Indians.

MARIANNA—The Chipola Lady Indians (43-10) host Tallahassee, Wednesday, April 13,
at 4 and 6 p.m., in the final home games of the season. Chipola travels to
Northwest on Saturday, April 16.
Chipola has earned a berth in the FCSAA State Tournament, beginning April 29 in
Pensacola.
The Lady Indians are 10-2 in league play and are tied
for second in the FCSAA State Softball poll with Northwest Florida. Top-ranked
Indian River leads the poll. Gulf Coast is fifth and Tallahassee is eighth.
Chipola infielder and designated hitter Ariell Van Hook was named
the NJCAA Softball Player of the Week for the week of March 23. Van Hook hit
.593 over eight games with 16 hits and 27 at-bats, including four doubles, three
home runs and 17 RBI’s. She hit a solo homerun in the 6th to tie the
game against Pensacola on March 17 and drove in the winning run in the bottom of
the 6th against Gulf Coast on March 19.
The Lady Indians scored a pair of wins over Gulf
Coast—6-4 and 9-6—on April 5.
Chipola shut out Pensacola in a double-header on
April 2. Brittany Black was the winning pitcher in Chipola’s 8-0 win in game
one. Elizabeth Krauser earned the win in Chipola’s 9-0 rout in game two.
Andrea Sullivan had a homerun for Chipola in game two.
Chipola split a double-header with Northwest on March
31. Chipola scored a 7-2 in game one behind winning pitcher Brittany Black.
Northwest won the second game 10-5 in 10 innings.
The Lady Indians swept Tallahassee on March 24.
Brittany Black picked up the 6-1 win in the first game. Chipola scored a 2-1 win
in game two. Elizabeth Krauser earned the win. Pinch hitter Brittany hit
a two-run homer with 2 outs in the top of the seventh.
Chipola split with Gulf Coast on March 19. Chipola
lost 9-4 in game one and came back to win game two, 5-2, behind winning pitcher
Elizabeth Krauser.
Brittany Black threw a no-hitter in Chipola’s 7-0 win
over Pensacola on March 17. Marielle Vleugeis picked up the win for Lady
Indian’s in a 5-1 win in game two.

BRAIN BOWLERS BEAT HARVARD, FINISH TENTH AT NATIONALS
CHICAGO—The Chipola College Brain Bowl team scored wins over Harvard, Stanford
and Northwestern and placed 10th among 32 colleges and universities
at the NAQT Division II National Championship April 9 in Chicago.
After winning the community college national championship two months ago,
Chipola captured another first place trophy by placing first among all community
colleges in the Division II tournament.
Chipola A lost to Minnesota by 10 points on the final question in the last round
of the preliminaries which cost them a chance to be re-seeded in the
championship bracket and therefore, a shot at winning the DII national
championship. The championship bracket includes the top two teams from each of
the initial four brackets.
Chipola finished third behind Ohio State and Minnesota in the preliminary rounds
with a 5-2 record. Chipola is only the second community college ever to place in
the top ten at the Division II Tournament. Yale defeated Chicago 510-315 to
claim the Division II championship.
Chipola’s Dallin Kelson placed third in individual scoring behind Neil Gurram
from MIT and Matthew Jackson from Yale. Kelson’s individual scoring
average is the highest ever for a community college player.
Chipola A team members are: Dallin Kelson, Travis Bontrager, Brittany Stephens
and Harrison Fuqua. The Chipola Brain Bowl team also includes: Paul Kelson,
Ashley Adams, Annemarie Nichols, Alton Stone, Nick Ratzlaff and Zach Gilmore.
Chipola is coming off the best year in school history after winning the Florida
Community College Activities Association Brain Bowl State Championship for the
fourth year in a row and the NAQT National
Community College Tournament in February.
Chipola captured six tournament wins during the
2010-11 season, including: the FCCAA State Championship,
Valencia Delta Burke, ACF Fall, Chipola New
Year Tournament, the NAQT Sectional Tournament, and the NAQT Community College
national championship.
Chipola math professor Stan Young and Humanities professor Dr. Robert Dunkle
serve as coaches for the Brain Bowl team.

CHIPOLA JAZZ BAND
PERFORMS AT TROY JAZZ FEST
TROY, AL—Chipola College music students and faculty recently attended the
Legends of Jazz Festival hosted by the John M. Long School of Music at Troy
State University.
Chipola’s Travis Bontrager of Marianna won the outstanding soloist award and was
featured with the Troy Jazz Band in the finale. He was one of only two
students selected from performances during the festival.
High Schools and Colleges from the Florida Panhandle and lower Alabama performed
throughout the day. The Troy University Jazz Band closed the program with
featured "legends of jazz" guest artists.

CHIPOLA SPRING MUSIC CONCERT IS
TUESDAY
MARIANNA—Chipola College’s Spring Musical Ensemble Concert is set for Tuesday,
April 19, at 7 p.m., in the Chipola Arts Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The
free concert of Swing, Latin, Funk styles, Cha-Cha and madrigals will feature
the college’s Chamber Singers, classical guitar students, and Jazz Band. This
will be the last chance to hear the Chipola Jazz Band this academic year.
This musical ensemble has been dazzling audiences in the tri-state area with
recent performances at the Troy University Jazz Festival and in district
schools. “This concert will feature many students who will play their last with
the band before transferring so, don’t miss out,” says Director Dr. Daniel
Powell.
The
Chipola Chamber Singers’ eclectic program under the direction of Stefan Gordon
and accompanied by Dr. Josh Martin will include music by William Boyce, John
Jacob Niles, John Rutter and assorted madrigals.

and only requires the public to come ready to tap their toes, expect to have

MARIANNA--Some 200 students
representing 14 area high schools participated in the 27th annual Chipola
College Math Olympiad on April 8.
Students competed individually
on written exams in Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus.
Teams competed in three Ciphering competitions and for Team Awards earned
through highest combined scores on the written exams. For their hard work,
the students earned certificates of participation and were treated to lunch.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony in the college Arts Center.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL HOSTS
NORTHWEST FLORIDA
MARIANNA—The Chipola baseball team
hosts Northwest Florida, Friday, April 15, at 2 p.m. The Indians play at
Northwest Florida April 16.
Chipola plays at Tallahassee on Monday, April 18, at 4 p.m. The Indians host
Tallahassee on Wednesday, April 20, at 5 p.m. The Indians travel to
Tallahassee Friday, April 22, at 3 p.m. Indians return home Saturday, April 23
to host Pensacola at 1 p.m.
The Indians are ranked fourth in the FCSAA State Poll. Chipola is 11-5 in the
Panhandle Conference play and 28-16 overall. Northwest Florida is 14-5.
Pensacola is 7-9. Tallahassee is 5-14 and Gulf Coast is 7-11.
Chipola scored an 8-5 over Northwest Florida on April 13. The Indians suffered a
10-6 loss to Gulf Coast on April 11. Chipola beat Gulf Coast 7-6 on April 9.
Chipola fell to Gulf Coast 5-4 on April 8.
Chipola swept Pensacola in a recent three-game series. The Indians beat
Pensacola 10-3 on April 1 behind the pitching of Robby Coles. Chipola slipped by
Pensacola 4-3 on March 31. Luke Bole was the winning pitcher. Chipola scored an
18-14 win over Pensacola on March 28.

CHIPOLA COACH MARKS 300 CAREER
WINS
MARIANNA—Chipola College softball coach Belinda Hendrix marked her 300th
career win at a pre-game ceremony on April 13.
In
seven seasons, Hendrix has coached 45 All Conference Players and 8 NJCAA All
Americans. To this point, her career record includes 310 wins and only 86
losses.
Coach Hendrix led the Lady Indians to Chipola’s first national softball title in
2007 when she was named the National Coach of the Year. Last season,
Chipola won a third straight Conference title and she was named conference Coach
of the year. Last year’s Lady Indians also won the state championship and
finished fifth in the National Tournament.
Coach Hendrix was also a successful player. She was the MVP at Chattahoochee
High School and went on to play college ball at Thomas University where she met
her assistant coach and husband Shane Hendrix. The Hendrixes have two little
sluggers, Madison and Jade.
Coach Hendrix began her coaching career at Vernon High School where she won two
district titles.
Athletic director Dr. Dale O’Daniel said, “Coach Hendrix has built an
outstanding program here at Chipola and this year is no exception. The Lady
Indians are 43-10 this season and have earned a spot in the state tournament in
Pensacola later this month.”
As
of April 15, the Lady Indians are 12-2 in league play and tied for first place
in the Panhandle Conference with Northwest Florida (12-2).

CHIPOLA’S SAM GROOMS SIGNS
WITH OKLAHOMA
MARIANNA—Chipola College point guard Sam Grooms will soon be a Sooner. The
two-time All Panhandle Conference selection signed with Oklahoma University at a
press conference April 13 at Chipola.
Grooms, a native of Greensboro, NC, started 50 games for Chipola over two
seasons. This season, he averaged 11 points and 5 assists per game. The 6’1”
Grooms led Chipola to a conference title and a runner-up finish in the state
tournament.
Grooms says, “From the minute I landed in Norman, I could tell how much people
loved Oklahoma. This was an easy decision for me. I’m excited about being a
Sooner.”
Chipola coach Jake Headrick,
says, “We’re happy for Sam and we can wait to watch him compete against the rest
of the Big 12.”

JUDGE BILL WRIGHT
to Speak at CHIPOLA Commencement
MARIANNA—The Honorable Judge William L. Bill Wright will deliver the
commencement address at Chipola College’s graduation ceremony on Thursday, May
5.
The ceremony begins at 7 p.m., in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. Parents,
relatives and friends are invited to a reception immediately following the
ceremony.
Judge Wright is a native of Marianna who graduated from Chipola in 1974. He has
served as judge of the 14th Judicial Circuit since his election in
1997. Wright served as Chief Judge of the 14th Circuit from
2005 to 2007.
Wright’s
association with Chipola began in 1973 as a senior at Marianna High School when
he earned 36 hours of college credit on College Level Examination Program
(CLEP). Upon his graduation from Chipola, he was awarded a Presidential
Scholarship to attend Florida State University where he earned a bachelor’s
degree. He graduated from the FSU College of Law in 1979 and was admitted to the
Florida Bar.
He served as Assistant State Attorney in Bay County from 1979 to 1983 and was
Chief Assistant State Attorney in Jackson County from 1983 to 1996. He was the
first attorney in the 14th Circuit to become Board Certified in
Criminal Trial Law. From 1984 to 1997, he also served as an adjunct instructor
at Chipola, teaching courses in the Criminal Justice area.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, says, “Judge Wright is a great friend to
Chipola. He supports of all college programs and is generous with his time and
resources.”
Wright
is a member, past president and secretary of the Marianna Rotary Club. He also
is past president of the Marianna Jaycees. Judge Wright and his wife, Tina, have
two children, Carter and Nikki.
More than 500 graduates make up the Chipola class of 2011, including 60
graduates who are earning bachelor’s degrees. They will join the ranks of more
than 12,000 Chipola alumni. Counted as members of the class are all who
completed their degrees or certificates from December of 2010 to May of 2011 or
who will complete work during the Summer 2011 terms.

AUTO TECH PROGRAM EARNS NATEF MASTER ACCREDITATION
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Automotive Technology program recently earned
Master Accreditation from the National Automotive Technicians Education
Foundation (NATEF).
William A. Kersten, NATEF president, conducted an on-site evaluation of the
Chipola program in April and recommended NATEF Master Accreditation, the highest
level of achievement recognized by NATEF.
President Kersten stated “We commend Chipola instructor John Gardner and his
staff for maintaining your program’s standards, and continuing to meet the
industry’s requirements. The explosion in automotive technology makes your
high quality automotive training program more valuable than ever.”
Bud Riviere, Dean of Chipola’s Workforce Development programs, said, “Our
automotive technology program has become one of the standard bearers for Chipola
College. The achievement of Master Accreditation through NATEF is
testimony to program excellence. John Gardner and our automotive staff
provide state-of-the-art training for our students.”
NATEF industry certification represents a seal of excellence indicating that
automotive facilities, equipment and instructional techniques represent the
highest the industry offers.

CHIPOLA TO OFFER LIFEGUARD
TRAINING
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer a Red Cross Lifeguard Training course
beginning Monday, May 2. A pre-requisite swim test is scheduled for 4 p.m.,
Thursday, April 28.
The course will meet from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., May 2-5 and May 9-13.
Students must be must be at least 15 years of age by the first day of class.
Participants must be able to swim 500 yards continuously, perform a variety of
water safety skills and pass a written test. Completion of the course does
not guarantee summer employment.
Cost is $200. Pre-registration is required in the Continuing Education
Office at 718-2473.

STUDENTS LEARN WITH PROJECT LEARNING TREE AT CAVERNS
MARIANNA—Chipola College students in the elementary education program recently
participated in a six-hour Project Learning Tree workshop at the Florida Caverns
State Park.
Bill Kleinhans and fellow Project Learning Tree (PLT) facilitators, foresters,
and naturalists Linda Hebb, Mark Hebb, Lil Hollis and Ed Lewis, led the
workshop.
Chipola science professor Dr. Santine Cuccio, says, “Project Learning Tree is
recognized as one of the premier environmental education programs in the world.
It gives teachers the strategies, techniques, and conceptual knowledge for
activity-based learning to take the environment into their classrooms and
students into the environment.”
The students used trigonometric functions to calculate the heights of trees,
studied drops of water in the water cycle, wrote Haiku poetry, learned about
different bird species to understand worm camouflage, constructed webs in which
each student was a member of an ecosystem; and studied tree cookies and rings.
The Chipola students were awarded certificates following their completion of the
workshop and the PreK-8 Environmental Education Activity Guide with
educator resources. Activities were selected from the guide and
implemented at the park, including: Birds and Worms, Water Wonders, Tree
Factory, Tree Cookies, Every Tree for Itself and Schoolyard Safari.
Chipola College offers Bachelor of Science degrees in elementary education,
exceptional student education, English education, middle and high school
mathematics education, and middle and high school science education.

Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, says, “These two young women are not only two
of Chipola’s best students, but they are two of the best in the United States.
They have perfect academic records and excellent records of serving others.
Both of them work in our ACE Lab helping other students succeed in their
classes. They come from fine families and I am very proud that they chose to
attend Chipola.”
Pam Rentz, Chipola English professor and Phi Theta Kappa adviser, says, “We are
so proud of the accomplishments of these students. Caitlyn and MaryBeth have
helped so many people while maintaining excellent grades. We are very proud of
their service to their college and to the community.”
Caitlyn Prichard of Chipley is a sophomore
at Chipola where she is majoring in Food and Resource Economics. Last year, she
served as the Florida FFA State President, allowing her to travel across the
state and nation representing the National FFA Organization.
While enrolled at Chipola, Caitlyn has been an active member of the Chipola
chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two year
colleges. She was elected Leadership Officer for the group this year. In
this position, she coordinated the first ever “From Farm to Family” conference,
a leadership workshop designed to teach agricultural literacy across the Florida
Panhandle. Prichard says, “To do my part in ensuring America never falls
into a trap of complacency, risking the food supply of future generations, I
began planning the ‘From Farm to Family’ project.” Prichard invited FFA and 4-H
members from 15 high schools and 12 middle schools in the district, and designed
the workshop to raise awareness about the importance of agriculture.” Prichard’s
team also designed a curriculum to provide resources for teaching agricultural
literacy to elementary school grades.
Prichard also participated in Relay for Life and worked on a toy drive to
distribute toys and books to children in local hospitals. She also helped
coordinate an ACT Prep Day for local high school students to prepare for the ACT
exam.
Prichard works as a math and science tutor in the Academic Center for Excellence
and also serves as a Biology Lab Assistant. She serves as the
Parliamentarian to the Chipola Student Government Association and also is a
member of the college science club, student ambassadors, and the Chipola Honors
Society.
The 2009 valedictorian of Chipley High School, Prichard has maintained a perfect
4.0 college GPA. She says, “The education I have received at Chipola has
not only allowed me to become a better student but has also given me many
opportunities to develop leadership skills.”
This fall, Caitlyn will be transferring to the University of Florida.
Ultimately, she plans to attend law school and become an effective advocate for
the agriculture industry as an agricultural lawyer.
For winning the Guistwhite award, Prichard will receive $5,000. The award is
based on academic achievement, participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs and
community service. The 20 recipients from across the nation were selected from
more than 1,340 applicants. The award is named in honor of Dr. Jack
Guistwhite and his wife Margaret.
Caitlyn’s portrait is the second of the Prichard family on the Chipola Academic
Wall of Honor. Her older sister Chrissie was an Academic All American in 2005.
Middle sister Cassie Prichard also was Coca-Cola Scholar in 2007. Caitlyn
is the daughter of David and Caren Prichard of Chipley.
MaryBeth Alderman is the daughter of Jason
and B.J. Alderman of Chipley. She was also the Valedictorian of Chipley High
School. She was named to the All-Florida Academic team and a national Coca-Cola
Gold Scholar which includes a $1,500 award.
She plans to transfer to UF to major in Food Science and Human Nutrition and
then on medical school to specialize in pediatrics.
MaryBeth, says,
“Instilled in me from an early age was the importance of work. The skills,
experiences, and life lessons gained from having the responsibility of a job
while in college are invaluable.” She worked 30 hours a week providing
childcare for two children. She has served as an office assistant at
Family Healthcare of Chipley which stimulated her interest in medicine. At
Chipola, she has been employed as a tutor in the Academic Center for Excellence
providing assistance to students with homework and test preparation. She also
has served as Chemistry Lab Assistant at the college. After school, she
tutors middle and high school students in calculus, algebra, and chemistry.
Alderman says, “All of these job experiences have strengthened me in different
ways, while giving me the opportunity to save money for my aspiration of
becoming a pediatrician.”
Alderman also has
an outstanding record of service. She coordinated the Conquering Cancer Project
which provided 500 toys to pediatric wards in seven area hospitals. The impetus
for this project came from the nine days she spent in the hospital as a young
middle school student. She says, “I remember the fear, loneliness, frustration,
and boredom of spending Christmas and New Year’s away from my family and friends
because I was stuck in my hospital bed. I also remember a bag of toys and
a bear graciously given to me by a local church. The impression this
simple gesture left on me will never be forgotten. The things in that bag helped
me endure my stay in the hospital.”
This experience
encouraged Alderman to extend the same generosity to other children. She
says, “As I became involved in Phi Theta Kappa, I realized that with the help of
other students my longing to encourage children just like me could become a
reality. I began communicating the idea to them and contacting area
hospitals.” As the project began to take shape, the group ordered
countless coloring books, crayons, DVDs, and dry-erase door hangers. With
the help of other Phi Theta Kappa members, toys were delivered to seven area
hospitals.
Alderman also has
held leadership positions in several campus groups. She served as president of
the Chipola Pre-Med Society. In this role, she worked with local schools in the
Haiti Relief and assisted with the Malaria Project which raised money for
mosquito nets for Africa. She was the lead coordinator for the Nutrition
Campaign to teach elementary students proper nutrition.
She was elected
senator of the Chipola Student Government Association and was active in the
Student Ambassador program. In Phi Theta Kappa, she was elected Service Officer
through which she helped in the following programs: Operation Christmas Child,
Senior Leadership Conference, Farm to Family workshop and an ACT Preparation
Workshop for high school students. She served as captain of a Relay for Life
team and also coordinated the Caps for Kids project by registering with the
national organization and raising $800.

SMALL BUSINESS SEMINARS SET FOR MAY 6 AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer two small business seminars on Friday,
May 6.
The first five students to sign up for any seminar will receive free admission.

On Friday, May 6, a seminar entitled, “Marketing Series, Part 1: Introduction to
21st Century Marketing” will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Participants will learn to choose the best methods for marketing a business,
target a market audience, create a free web site quickly and easily, discover
which social media avenues are the best, and learn to optimize internet
presence.
Also on May 6, a seminar entitled, “Marketing Series, Part 2: Marketing on the
Internet and Using Social Media” will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Participants will discover the power of having a social media strategy and learn
to implement new marketing techniques, unlock the secrets of the top social
media sites and establish brands online presence.

NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE
MARIANNA—Twelve members of the Panhandle Conference champion Chipola College
softball team were named to the Panhandle All-Conference team.
Ariell Van Hook was named Conference Player of the Year. Brittany Black
was selected as the Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix and assistant Jimmy Hendrix were selected as
the Panhandle Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
Three Lady Indians—Andrea Sullivan, Samantha Rich and Brittany Black —were named
First Team All Conference. Three Chipola players—Sayumi Akamine, Selentia
Pittman, Hannah Lovestrand and Elizabeth Krauser —were named Second Team All
Conference. Lady Indians MeQuilla Franklin, Ashley Ellis and Ebony Wright
earned honorable mention selections.
With a current league record of 13-3, the Lady Indians have earned the top seed
in the FCCAA State Tournament which begins April 29 in Pensacola.

MARIANNA—The
Chipola College baseball team is battling with
Northwest Florida State for the Panhandle Conference title.
Chipola (13-7) in Conference play and 30-18 overall is ranked fifth in the FCSAA
State Poll. Northwest Florida (15-6) leads the conference race as of April
21. Pensacola is 11-9. Tallahassee is 6-17 and Gulf Coast is 7-13.
The Indians travel to Tallahassee Friday, April 22, for a 3 p.m. game. The
Indians return home Saturday, April 23, to host Pensacola at 1 p.m. The
Indians travel to Pensacola on Monday, April 25. Chipola hosts Pensacola
Wednesday, April 27, at 5 p.m. The Indians also host Wallace Dothan
Monday, May 2, at 5 p.m.
The Indians scored a big 14-4 win over Tallahassee on Wednesday, April 20.
Luke Bole was the winning pitcher for Chipola. James Broddicker was 3-5,
with 2 runs and an RBI. Michael Revell was 4-5 with two runs scored and an
RBI. Geno Escalante was 2-4, with three runs scored and three RBI.
Tyrone Dawson was 3-4, with four RBI.
Chipola suffered a 6-4 loss to Tallahassee on Monday, April 18. James Boddicker
was 2-5. Mack Harrison was 2-5.
Chipola swept a pair of games with Northwest, April 15 and 16.
The Indians scored a 9-2 win on April 15 and a
6-5 win on April 16.
The top two teams in the Panhandle Conference earn a spot in the FCSAA State
Tournament, May 7-11, at Joker Marchant

PINKINS SIGNS WITH CHIPOLA
COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Marianna High School
basketball standout Kruize Pinkins on Tuesday, April 19, signed to play at
Chipola College.
A First Team All-State selection, Pinkins averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds, 4
assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals for the Bulldogs.
He was named Jackson County Player of the Year and picked for the FACA All-Star
Team. He was second in voting for MVP at the state All-Star game.
Pinkins led Marianna to three seasons with 20-plus wins as a varsity starter and
two Final Four appearances under coach Travis Blanton.
Chipola coach Jake Headrick says, “We’re excited to have Kruize join our program
here at Chipola. He has a lot of knowledge about the game. He’s going to help us
in a lot of ways as a player. He has a very bright future as a student-athlete.”

new Scholarship
established at chipola college
MARIANNA—The
Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc., from the Edward K. Roberts Fund
established a new scholarship at Chipola College for the upcoming summer and
fall 2011 semesters.
The
scholarship fund was created with a $50,000 donation from the Community
Foundation of Sarasota County with funds from the estate of the late Edward K.
Roberts.
The
intent of the gift was to distribute funds to underfunded community colleges and
to other charitable and emerging needs that Mr. Roberts felt strongly and
passionately about. It is intended that the scholarship fund help the
Chipola College Foundation provide scholarships with a preference given to
part-time students who may not qualify for other financial aid.
The
scholarship will be available for the Summer II Session at Chipola College and
the application deadline is Wednesday, May 18. The application deadline for the
Fall semester is Thursday, June 9.

Eligible For $1 Million Aspen Institute Prize
Washington, DC – In its first step to
identify the nation’s best community colleges and award $1 million in prize
money, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program on April 25 ranked Chipola
College as one of the nation’s 120 best community colleges.
Chipola is eligible to compete for the Prize funds (to be announced in December)
by insisting on high standards for learning, college completion without delay,
and serving as a training ground for jobs that pay competitive wages. The full

Citing the urgent need to focus on the value and potential of community
colleges, Aspen Institute College Excellence Program Executive Director Josh

Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden and Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education, attended the
Aspen Institute’s announcement event on April 25. The Aspen Prize was
announced at the White House Community College Summit hosted by President Obama
and Dr. Biden in October. At that time, the President noted how critical
community colleges are to the millions of youth and adult learners – who enroll
in America’s nearly 1,200 community colleges every year.
Dr.
Biden, a lifelong educator who continues to teach English at Northern Virginia
Community College, noted that “The country is becoming increasingly aware of the
importance of community colleges in educating our way to a stronger America.
I am inspired by all of today’s community college students—the workers who have
returned to school to improve their job prospects, the mothers who juggle jobs
and childcare while preparing for new careers, and those who work diligently
while at community college, preparing to transfer to a four-year institution.”
Florida College System Chancellor Dr. Will Holcombe announced that 14 Florida
colleges have been deemed eligible for The Aspen Prize: Brevard Community
College, Broward College, Central Florida Community College, Chipola College,
Daytona State College, Lake City Community College, Lake-Sumter Community
College, Miami-Dade College, Northwest Florida State College, Santa Fe College,
St. Johns River Community College, South Florida Community College, Tallahassee
Community College and Valencia Community College. The Sunshine State leads the
nation in the number of colleges qualified to compete for part of $1 million to
reward excellence in community colleges. “Colleges in our system are selected
for national recognition and grants on a regular basis. We are thrilled
that half of our colleges, the most of any state, have been chosen for this
prestigious honor, “said Dr. Holcombe. “This competition will bring further
recognition of the vital role our colleges play in Florida’s economy and
people’s lives.”
Chipola and 119 other community colleges will be winnowed to eight-to-ten
finalists in September based on how much students learn, how many complete their
programs on time, and how well students do in the job market after graduating.
Eight to 10 finalists will be named in September 2011, with the final prize
winner and up to three runners-up announced in December. The winner will receive
approximately $700,000, with the runners-up sharing the remaining money.
Chipola is now eligible to submit an application containing detailed data on
these criteria and must demonstrate that it delivers exceptional student
results, uses data to drive decisions, and uses that information to continually
improve over time.
Speaking for the jury that will select winners and finalists, former Governor of
Michigan John Engler – president of the Business Roundtable and former president
of the National Association of Manufacturers – emphasized the tremendous
importance of community colleges in preparing the high-tech workforce American
companies need.
Aspen will conduct site visits to each of the ten finalists in the fall. And,
based on the evidence, the Prize Jury will select a grand prize winner and two
to three runners-up, to be announced in December.
The Aspen College Excellence
Program aims to identify and
replicate campus-wide practices that significantly improve college student
outcomes. Through the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence,
projects targeting a new generation of college leaders, and other initiatives,
the College Excellence Program works to improve colleges’ understanding and
capacity to teach and graduate students, especially the growing population of
low-income and minority students on American campuses. For more

Scholarship established at chipola college
MARIANNA—The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc., from the
Edward K. Roberts Fund established a new scholarship at Chipola College for the
upcoming summer and fall 2011 semesters.
The
scholarship fund was created with a $50,000 donation from the Community
Foundation of Sarasota County with funds from the estate of the late Edward K.
Roberts.
The
intent of the gift was to distribute funds to underfunded community colleges and
to other charitable and emerging needs that Mr. Roberts felt strongly and
passionately about. It is intended that the scholarship fund help the
Chipola College Foundation provide scholarships with a preference given to
part-time students who may not qualify for other financial aid.
The
scholarship will be available for the Summer II Session at Chipola College and
the application deadline is Wednesday, May 18. The application deadline for the
Fall semester is Thursday, June 9.

SUMMER PROGRAMS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer programs for children of all ages
this summer.
A Parent/Infant swimming class
(ages 3 and under) is scheduled for May 23-26 with
classes available at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Registration deadline is May 16.
Cost is $30.
Swimming lessons will also be offered for ages four and up. Lessons are based on
a combination of nationally-recognized methods. The following sessions are
scheduled: Session 1: June 6-16 with registration deadline May 31; Session 2:
June 20-June 30 with registration deadline June 13; Session 3: July 11-21 with
registration deadline July 5; and Session 4: Aug. 8-18 with registration
deadline August 1. Classes are available at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. or 7 p.m. Sessions
are Monday through Thursday for two weeks of 45-minute lessons. Cost is $45 for
each session. Pre-registration is required with a $5 late registration fee. For

Chipola Baseball Coach Jeff Johnson
will offer three camps. A Pitching Camp for ages 7-18 will meet

IN STATE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
PENSACOLA—The
Chipola Lady Indians face Hillsborough College, Friday, April 29, at noon (CST)
in a first round game of the FCSAA/NJCAA District Softball Tournament.
Chipola will play again at 5 p.m. Friday and will face either Gulf Coast or
State College of Florida.
The
tournament continues Saturday, April 30, with the championship game set for 10
a.m. Sunday, May 1.
Chipola is playing in the Gulf District bracket. The winners of the Gulf and
Atlantic Districts will meet in the state championship game; however, both teams
will earn a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament.

MARIANNA—The
Chipola College baseball finished the regular season
as Co-Champions of the Panhandle Conference.
Chipola will share the title with Northwest Florida State; however earned the
top seed in the upcoming FSCAA State Tournament, May 7-11, at Joker Marchant
Stadium in
Lakeland.
Chipola (16-8) in Conference play and 33-19 overall is ranked sixth in the FCSAA
State Poll.

MARIANNA—Chipola
College’s annual High School Baseball Showcase, is set for Saturday, May 14, at
the Chipola field.
The
event is open to all high school sophomores, juniors or seniors who are current
members of a varsity baseball team.
Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson says, “This is a great opportunity for players
to showcase their skills and to gain national exposure while being evaluated by
JUCO and Division I coaches, as well as professional scouts.” Johnson says
he is expecting from 50 to 100 pro and college scouts to attend.
Check-in opens at 8 a.m. on May 14. The event will continue rain or shine with
indoor facilities available. Skill evaluation for running, hitting and fielding
begins at 9 a.m. Skill evaluation for hitting, pitching and catching begins at
12:30 p.m. Players should wear baseball pants and bring their own bats, spikes,
gloves, hats and protective cups.
Registration deadline is Friday, May 7. Participants must provide proof of
insurance and sign a waiver of liability. Cost is $100.
