CHIPOLA SHOW CHOIR
MEMBER WINS IDOL DREAM TICKET
ORLANDO—Kyndall Covington, a member of Chipola College’s Show Choir, won an
American Idol Dream Ticket at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando.
The Show Choir performed at Disney during Spring Break.
Successfully auditioning and performing her way to the evening competition,
Covington was voted best singer of the day by the large enthusiastic audience.
She won a Dream Ticket giving her the opportunity to sing in front of an
American Idol representative at a regional audition for the American Idol TV
show.
The Dream ticket is the ultimate “Fast Pass” to the regional auditions.
While at Disney, the Chipola Show Choir performed for a standing-room-only crowd
in Downtown Disney. Chipola Show Choir is under the direction of Angie
White, Josh Martin, and Brittney Holmes.
Auditions for Chipola Show Choir 2010-11 are for Monday, April 19 at 4 p.m. in
the college’s Arts Center. All college and graduating high school seniors
who are interested in being a part of Show Choir are encouraged to audition.

CHIPOLA FALL TERM SET FOR APRIL
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer two weeks of early registration in April for
the Fall 2010 term.
Early registration dates for current students are based on the number of hours
completed. The following dates are scheduled: April 19, students with 45 or more
hours; April 20, students with 15 or more hours; April 21-22 and April 26-30,
students with at least one hour.

PIANO AND
CELLO DUO TO PERFORM AT CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—The Romanenko-Yoshikawa Duo will present a concert in the Chipola
College Arts Center, Sunday, May 9, at 3 p.m.
The concert is sponsored by the Chipola Fine and Performing Arts Department.
Admission is by donation only.
The duo includes cellist Alexei Romanenko and pianist Christine Yoshikawa and
will feature works by Valentini, Schnittke, Fauré, Liszt, Romanenko and Strauss.
The Romanenko-Yoshikawa Duo continues to delight audiences around the world with
their highly vibrant musicality and technical brilliance. Equally in demand as
concert soloists, the duo has distinguished itself as a combined dynamic team of
artists with an impressive list of awards and personal achievements.
They also are advocates for new music and dedicated pedagogues to a generation
of young musicians, with current and past teaching positions at the University
of British Columbia, Arizona State University, University of Florida, and
Chipola College.

CAST ANNOUNCED FOR
CHIPOLA’S “THE THREE LITTLE…”
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Theater is in full rehearsal for the children’s
play, “The Three Little…,” which will be presented to hundreds of elementary
school children in May. A public performance is set for Thursday, May 13, at 7
p.m.
This high energy, original production is an adaptation by Chipola director
Charles Sirmon and choreographer Chris Manasco. “The Three Little . . .” tells
the story of Pigs, Blind Mice and other familiar tales in which 3 is a magic
number.
Director Sirmon recently selected actors in the following roles: Ben Grande as

PRESENT AT CHIPOLA REGIONAL ARTS MEETING
MARIANNA—The public is cordially invited to attend the monthly meeting of the
Chipola Regional Arts Association on Tuesday, April 20, at Jim’s Buffet and

Gator Gathering At Chipola College
MARIANNA—Chipola College and the University of Florida College of Agricultural
and Life Sciences invites CALS alumni, friends and prospective students and
their families to the annual Gator Gathering on the Chipola campus, Tuesday,
April 27.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Continuing Education Conference Center
where dinner will be served.
Those in attendance will receive an update from CALS Dean Kirby Barrick and hear
from Agricultural Education and Communication Chair Ed Osborne. The UF
representatives will discuss the proposed Agricultural Education and
Communication program to begin in the Fall of 2011 on the Chipola campus.
Dr. Osborne also will discuss the distance learning masters program which is now
available.
Overall, the gathering will provide an excellent opportunity to answer questions
regarding any area of interest offered by UF-CALS.

INDIANS LEAD PANHANDLE CONFERENCE
MARIANNA—The
league-leading Chipola Lady Indians finish up the conference season with a pair
of home doubleheaders: TCC on Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m. and Northwest on
Friday, April 16, at 4 p.m.
Chipola leads the Panhandle Conference race with a 10-2 record as of April 8.
Northwest is 7-5. Gulf Coast is 4-6. TCC is 3-6 and Pensacola is 3-8.
Chipola is third in the FCCAA poll behind top-ranked Miami Dade and second place
Santa Fe. Northwest is sixth. Gulf Coast is ninth.
Chipola swept a pair of games from Pensacola April 7, winning 4-1 and 9-2.
The Lady Indians split an April 1
double-header with Gulf Coast, losing 6-3 in game one and winning 7-5 in game
two.
Chipola swept Northwest in a March 30 double-header winning 4-3 in game one and
9-0 in game two.
Chipola’s Michelle Hewett was named NJCAA Softball Player of the Week for April
4. Hewett had a tremendous week at the plate for the sixth-ranked team in
the country. In a March 30 double-header against Northwest, the sophomore
went 7-for-9 with two runs, two doubles, two RBIs, and two stolen bases.
Two days later, in a double-header against Gulf Coast, Hewett went 2-for-6 with
two runs, one RBI, two walks, and one stolen base. For the week, the outfielder
batted .600 (9-15) with four runs, two doubles, three RBIs, two walks, and three
stolen bases.
Hewett was also named FCCAA Softball Player of the Week on Feb. 25.
The FCCAA state softball tournament is set for April 30 in Auburndale.

INDIANS SECOND
IN CONFERENCE RACE
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians moved into second place in the Panhandle Conference
race with a string of Spring Break wins.
Chipola won two of three games in a recent series with Pensacola. Pensacola won
a 7-5 decision on April 7. The Indians scored a 9-7 win over Pensacola on April
5. Chipola beat PJC 7-5 on April 3.
Chipola swept a three game set with Northwest, including a 9-8 win on April 2,
and a 10-4 win on March 31. The Indians blanked Northwest 10-0 on March 29
behind the shutout pitching of Austin Wright.
With nine conference games remaining as of April 8, the Indians are 7-8 in
league play. Gulf Coast (11-1) leads the league. TCC, PJC and Northwest are all
knotted at 6-9.
The top two teams from the conference will represent the Panhandle in the state
tournament.
The Indians play at Tallahassee April 9 and return home to host Tallahassee
Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m., at the Chipola field. Chipola heads back to
TCC April 12.
Chipola hosts Gulf Coast Wednesday, April 14, at 5 p.m. and Saturday, April 17,
at 1 p.m. The Indians play at Gulf Coast April 16.
The Indians host Northwest in the final home conference game Monday, April 26,
at 5 p.m. Chipola plays at Northwest April 24 and April 28.
The Indians’ recent success moved them back into the FCCAA Top 10 landing at
number 8.
The Indians finished second in
the conference and second in the state last season. In 13 seasons at the helm,
Chipola head
coach Jeff Johnson has led the Indians to the state tournament 10 times with six
appearances in the title game. Chipola
won the 2008 and 2007 state titles and captured the school’s first-ever national
tourney in 2007. The Indians finished second in the state tournament in 2009,
2005, 2002 and 2001, third in 1998, and
among the top four in 2006.

CHIPOLA CHEERLEADER TRYOUTS SET FOR JUNE 1
MARIANNA—Spring Tryouts for the 2010-11 Chipola College cheerleading season will
be held Tuesday, June 1, at the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
Freshmen are required to submit a high school transcript and a letter of
recommendation from the most recent previous cheerleader sponsor/coach.
All who try out must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be full-time (12 hours) Chipola
students in the Fall 2010 semester. Scholarships are currently available
for Chipola cheerleaders.
The gym will be open at 3:30 p.m. with tryouts beginning at 4:00 p.m.

CHIPOLA BEATS GULF COAST IN TEN-INNING BATTLE
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians outlasted the Gulf Coast Commodores 14-13 in
10-inning battle between the top two teams in the Panhandle Conference April 14
at Chipola.
With the win, the Indians improve to 10-9 in league play and increase their hold
on second place in the conference which comes with a state tournament berth.
With the game knotted at 13-13 in the bottom of the tenth, left fielder
Eric Sauls connected on a rope to left center to score
Blake Newalu and give Chipola the walk-off win.
The game was the first of a three game set that continues in Panama City on
Friday before finishing at Chipola field on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
The
Indians host Northwest in the final home conference game Monday, April 26, at 5
p.m. Chipola plays at Northwest April 24 and April 28.
The two heavyweight teams traded blows throughout the first three innings with
the Commodores taking a 7-5 lead. Gulf Coast picked up three in the fourth
on a homerun to increase their lead to 10-5. The Commodores posted three more in
the sixth, while Chipola’s
LeVon Washington plated
Andy Fermin make it 13-6.
After holding Gulf Coast scoreless in the seventh, the scoreboard began to light
up for Chipola as the Indians posted five runs on only two hits. This
would signify a change in momentum for the remainder of the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Chipola trailed 13-11 with two outs and bases loaded
when Marianna native

In the final inning, after nearly four hours of hard-fought competition,
Blake Newalu singled to short and advanced to second on a wild throw.
Newalu stole third on the first pitch to
Tyrone Dawson who eventually earned a walk. With runners on the corners,
Eric Sauls slapped the game winning hit to score Newalu.
Pitcher Duncan Midkiff picked up the win for Chipola. Austin Wright and CJ
Lusted threw 3.2 innings apiece for Chipola.
With the win, Chipola improves to 24-20 on the season and 11-9 in conference
play. Gulf Coast (13-3) has clinched the conference title. Chipola (10-9)
is second. PJC is 7-9. Northwest is 7-11 and TCC is 7-12.

CHIPOLA BRAIN BOWLERS
HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING SEASON
MARIANNA—Chipola College officials recognized the accomplishments of the college
Brain Bowl team at a press conference on April 14.
Chipola won the FCCAA State Championship for the third year in a row and
finished fourth in the Community College National Championship. Chipola is the three-time, defending Florida State champion. The team
also finished second in the NAQT national tournament in 2008 and 2009.
The Chipola squad recorded a string of victories on their way to their best year
ever with wins over state universities FSU, UF and USF, and Chipola held their
own in matches with Harvard and Arizona State.
The Chipola coaches are mathematics professor Stan Young and Humanities
professor Dr. Robert Dunkle. Team members include:
Ethan Hewett, Nathan
Hooppell, Dallin Kelson, Drew Padgett and Cody Pickens.
Chipola head coach Stan Young, said, “I’m so proud of players for the hard work
they put into this program. They could have been complacent based on our past
successes, but they worked hard to take it up a level. Coach Dunkle and I thank
everyone for the support we have received this year. We all should be proud.”
Chipola defeated Valencia CC 730-350 in the final to claim the 2010 FCCAA State
title. The team finished the initial round robin with a perfect 9-0 record on
their way to beating Valencia in the championship game for the second straight
year.
Three Chipola players were among the top 10 individuals in the state tourney.
Dallin Kelson was fifth with 750 points. Cody Pickens was sixth with 495 points.
Ethan Hewett scored 440 points to take tenth place. Nathan Hooppell and
Drew Padgett also scored among the top 40 players in the tournament.
The Chipola team had its highest finish ever at the Division II NAQT National
Championship on April 10, finishing 14th out of 32. Chipola
finished third in the initial bracket recording wins over St. Charles, Illinois,
Wisconsin, and Truman State. This record placed Chipola in the second tier for
the playoffs with seven other teams: Princeton, Cornell, Cal Tech, Ottawa, St.
Charles, Northeast Alabama and Carleton College. Chipola led Harvard at the half
and took Cal Tech and Arizona State to overtime games. Unfortunately, Chipola
lost both overtime games.
Dallin Kelson was a tournament all-star in the NAQT, finishing eighth overall.
He is the first Chipola player to receive this honor.
Of the team’s success, coach Dr. Robert Dunkle, said, “It speaks to
the work ethic of our kids that in the last three years we have consistently
beaten teams from schools with much larger enrollments. Many of our opponents
attended private schools or schools that offered Advanced Placement courses.”
Chipola's A Team tied for fourth in the Community College National Championship
held at Chipola Feb. 26-27. The Chipola B Team finished tied for tenth.
The field consisted of 24 teams from around the nation.
On March 6, the Chipola team, represented solely by Dallin Kelson, won the
Minnesota Undergrad Mirror held at Valencia CC. Kelson beat FSU 260-60 in the
final, and had only one loss in the tourney, to the USF. FSU had two losses,
both to Chipola’s Kelson. He was the top scorer with 1,180 points and averaged
more points per game and more points per bonus than any team in the tournament.
The Chipola Blue Team beat perennial powerhouse Valencia Red (330-220) on Nov.
14 to claim the championship of the Delta Burke Tournament for the second
straight year. Chipola beat South Florida CC in the quarterfinals, Case Western
University (Ohio) in the semifinals, and Valencia in the championship.
Five Chipola players scored among the top 30 individuals in a field of more than
140 players. Dallin Kelson was sixth overall. Ethan Hewett finished 10th. Drew
Padgett was 11th. Nathan Hooppell finished 14th and Cody
Pickens was 30th.
The Chipola A and B teams finished first and second respectively at the ACF Fall
Academic Tournament Oct. 31 in Gainesville. Chipola A finished 11-0, while
Chipola B finished 10-1, losing only to Chipola A. The 12-team field included
the University of South Florida and several state colleges. Five Chipola players
scored among the top 15 individuals with Dallin Kelson first overall.
Ethan Hewett was third. Cody Pickens, Drew Padgett and Nathan Hooppell finished
at numbers 12, 13 and 14, respectively.
Chipola finished third in a 20-team tournament in Orlando on Oct. 24.
Chipola finished third behind the first place University of Florida A team and
the second place Florida State University B team. Chipola also scored two wins
over the FSU A team. Kelson was the ninth individual among 65 players. His
team-mate Ethan
Hewett was tenth overall.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, said, “These young men represent the best of
the best in our student body. Not only are they gifted students, but they work
very hard to perform at a high level year after year.”

CHIPOLA JAZZ BAND TO
PRESENT FREE CONCERT APRIL 20
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Jazz Band under the direction of Dr. Daniel Powell
will present a free concert Tuesday, April 20, at 7 p.m., in the Chipola Arts
Center.
The non-ticketed show will feature many styles of jazz including: swing, latin,
ballad, bossa nova, funk, swing, rock ballad, and moderate swing.

ELECTED CHIPOLA SGA PREZ
MARIANNA—Madison Wester of Grand Ridge was elected president of the Chipola
College Student Government Association during Spring elections on April 7.
Aja Finklea of Chipley was elected sophomore class president. Monica Guilford of
Blountstown was chosen Chief Justice.

students enrolled at Chipola are members of the SGA and may, through their

faculty and administration of the college.

MARIANNA—Some
200 students representing 14 area high schools participated in the 26th annual
Chipola College Math Olympiad on April 9.
Students competed individually on written exams in Algebra I and II, Geometry,
Trigonometry and Calculus. Teams competed in three Ciphering competitions
and for Team Awards that are earned through highest combined scores on the
written exams. For their hard work, the students earned certificates of
participation and were treated to lunch.

BLUE SPRINGS OLD TIMERS
DAY IS MAY 8
MARIANNA—Blue Springs Old Timers Day is set for Saturday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m., at the Blue Springs Recreation Area.
The Blue Springs Working Group is hosting the event. Working Group leader Allan
Tidwell, says, “The purpose of Old Timer’s Day is to assemble those who have
known and cherished Blue Springs in order to hear their stories of the ‘old
days’ at the spring.
We are especially interested in stories before
1970.”
The event begins at 11 a.m. with an informal visit with friends and interviews.
A fish fry and covered dish picnic begins at noon. A storytelling session kicks
off at 1 p.m.
All who want to tell stories or hear them are invited. Guests are asked to
bring: a covered dish, a lawn chair, old photos of Blue Springs, and stories to
share or an ear to listen.
Tidwell says, “Blue Springs has been a magnet for the citizens of Jackson County
for nearly 200 years. It has been a special place to swim, picnic, relax
and play hooky from school. Family reunions, Fourth of July celebrations,
school outings and church baptisms are all part of the springs story. Come
join us as we add to that history.”

CRAA SPONSORS MUSIC
PROGRAM IN LOCAL SCHOOLS
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association recently sponsored educational
programs by concert flutist Donna Wissinger in selected local elementary and
middle schools.
Wissinger interacted with, taught, and entertained over 2,500 children at Golson
Elementary, Vernon Elementary, Cottondale Elementary, Marianna Middle, and Ponce
de Leon Elementary schools.
Students raced to the beat of the flute and were then asked to feel their own
heartbeat, proving we all have music inside. Students were exposed to many
different types of music and especially enjoyed hearing the William Tell
overture and visualizing the horses coming.
Wissinger also discussed the development of the flute and students were able to
see flutes from all over the world.

Chipola Ladies Capture Panhandle Conference Crown
MARIANNA—The Chipola Lady Indians clinched the Panhandle Conference title and
secured a top spot at the NJCAA Region VIII Softball Tournament after sweeping
rival Tallahassee Community College in an April 10 double-header.
The Lady Indians won the first game (3-0) behind the shutout performance of
winning pitcher Brittany Black. She allowed only one hit while striking out 5
Lady Eagles in a complete game.
In the second game, the Lady Indians jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with
Michelle Hewett scoring from third on a single by Ariell van Hook in the third
inning. The teams traded runs in the fifth as Chipola maintained a 2-1
lead heading into the seventh.
Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, the Lady Indians mounted their comeback. After
Trish Bliss was hit by a pitch, Dana Cauthen reached on a fielder’s choice and
an errant throw advanced Bliss to second. With two outs, Chipola catcher
Kellie Todd tripled to center field on a 2-1 pitch, plating Bliss and Cauthen to
give the Lady Indians the 4-3 victory.
The Lady Indians improved to 12-2 in Panhandle Conference play and 40-11
overall.
Chipola will return to action Friday, April 16 in their final double-header
conference match-up against Northwest Florida at 4 p.m. The Lady Indians
defeated Northwest last month, 4-3 and 9-0.

MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians outlasted the Gulf Coast Commodores 14-13 in
10-inning battle between the top two teams in the Panhandle Conference April 14
at Chipola.
With the win, the Indians improve to 10-9 in league play and increase their hold
on second place in the conference which comes with a state tournament berth.
With the game knotted at 13-13 in the bottom of the tenth, left fielder
Eric Sauls connected on a rope to left center to score
Blake Newalu and give Chipola the walk-off win.
The game was the first of a three game set that continues in Panama City on
Friday before finishing at Chipola field on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
The Indians host Northwest in the final
home conference game Monday, April 26, at 5 p.m. Chipola plays at Northwest
April 24 and April 28.
The two heavyweight teams traded blows throughout the first three innings with
the Commodores taking a 7-5 lead. Gulf Coast picked up three in the fourth
on a homerun to increase their lead to 10-5. The Commodores posted three more in
the sixth, while Chipola’s
LeVon Washington plated
Andy Fermin make it 13-6.
After holding Gulf Coast scoreless in the seventh, the scoreboard began to light
up for Chipola as the Indians posted five runs on only two hits. This
would signify a change in momentum for the remainder of the game.

Eric Sauls slapped the game winning hit to score Newalu.
Pitcher Duncan Midkiff picked up the win for Chipola. Austin Wright and CJ
Lusted threw 3.2 innings apiece for Chipola.
With the win, Chipola improves to 24-20 on the season and 11-9 in conference
play. Gulf Coast (13-3) has clinched the conference title. Chipola (10-9)
is second. PJC is 7-9. Northwest is 7-11 and TCC is 7-12.

STUDENTS HONORED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
MARIANNA—Chipola College officials on Wednesday recognized the academic
and service accomplishments of two of Chipola’s most outstanding students.
Chipola sophomore Jessica Bradley was named to Coca Cola Scholars Gold
Team and to the All-Florida Academic First Team.
Allison Ellis was named to the 2010 All-Florida Academic First Team, the All-USA
Academic First Team, the 2010 New Century Scholar, and a 2010 Guistwhite
Scholar.
Both students were featured in an April issue of USA Today. Both are leaders in
the Chipola Nu Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society
for Two-Year Colleges.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough introduced the students whose portraits will
hang in the Chipola Academic Hall of Fame. “We are so proud to add two more
students to our wall of honor. These portraits represent the best of the best of
Chipola students and community college students from across the nation. I
congratulate Allison and Jessica for their many leadership and academic
accomplishments,” Prough said.
Jessica Bradley
Jessica Bradley was named to Coca Cola Scholars Gold Team and to the All

An early-admission student to Chipola, she was a member of Chipola Honors
program, and Scholarship Officer of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Bradley was
also a Chipola Student Ambassador and a member of the Student Government
Association. She also served as a writer and editor of the Chipola student
newspaper, The Papoose.
When asked about her Chipola experience, Bradley said, "As an early admit
student, Chipola gave me the opportunity to challenge myself and expand my
education before I was ready to transfer to a larger university."
Bradley was founder of Phi Theta Kappa’s “Reading First” project that
provided a free book to every first grade student in Jackson County. She led
Chipola students in the drive to deliver a total of 860 copies of the book, The
One, the Only, Magnificent Me to students in the county.
Bradley said, “This project had such an impact on me because I now know
that something as simple as a book is out of reach to so many of the children in
our own county. It’s a bittersweet moment to hand a seven year old their first
book. I’m thrilled that Phi Theta Kappa had the opportunity to invest in the
future students of our society, and give them a book that they can really relate
to.”
Bradley has worked to promote literacy to students of all ages. In the
Characters with Class program, she led Chipola students on visits to local
schools where they wore costumes to represent characters from various books.
Bradley also worked to conduct four free ACT prep courses for high school
students in the district.
Bradley is the daughter of Karen and Aron Bradley,
of Greenwood. She is a graduate of Sneads High School and plans to transfer to
the University of Florida to major in Public Relations. She also hopes to
attend law school upon completion of her Bachelor’s degree.
Allison Ellis
Chipola sophomore Allison Ellis is one of the most awarded students in Chipola
College history. She was named to the 2010 All-Florida Academic First Team, the
All-USA Academic First Team and the 2010 New Century Scholar, the top student
from the state of Florida. Additionally, Ellis was named a 2010 Guistwhite
Scholar.
As New Century Scholar, Ellis delivered the keynote address at the All-Florida
Academic Team meeting in Tallahassee and the American Association of Community
College Presidents in Seattle. While in Seattle, Ellis and a small group
of students were invited to meet with Melinda Gates, wife of Microsoft founder
Bill Gates.
Ellis’ selection for these and other awards were based on her 4.0 academic
standing and her work as a leadership officer in the Chipola chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa.
Ellis had her choice of colleges, but chose to attend Chipola for her first two
years. “Attending Chipola has allowed me to be involved in many extracurricular
activities which wouldn’t have been possible at a larger college. I feel like my
decision to attend a community college has and will continue to benefit me in
the future,” Ellis said.
The Chipley native led several programs to help children locally and
internationally. From dressing up as a book character and reading to
elementary school children to raising money for school supplies or mosquito
nets, Ellis has worked to improve children’s lives and learning.
As captain of the Chipola Cheerleading Squad, she coordinated pep rallies at
elementary schools and represented the college in local parades. Ellis, who
plans to attend medical school, also served as president and treasurer of the
Chipola Pre-Med Society. Her work was not limited to young children; she
also volunteered at the ACT prep course for area high-schoolers held at Chipola.
She helped coordinate a shoebox drive on campus for Operation Christmas Child
and worked with March of Dimes, Rock the Vote, Relay for Life and United Way.
Ellis said her favorite project was Mission Backpack, a school supplies drive
which she coordinated last summer. The project was founded by the Florida
Baptist Children’s Home to help provide disadvantaged and orphaned children with
backpacks and school supplies. Ellis said, “Studies show that backpacks give
children more enthusiasm and excitement for school, another reason why this
particular project was so important to me.”
She worked with businesses to coordinate drop-off zones for the school supplies,
and encouraged other students to donate. Chipola collected over 60 backpacks and
school supplies for the Children’s Home in Tallahassee and for students in
Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Russia and Romania.
Ellis helped involve all student organizations at the college through the
“Nothing But Nets” project. She led a team of college students on a
malaria awareness campaign to local elementary schools, and led a fund drive to
collect loose change to raise money for malaria nets for families in Africa.
Ellis is the daughter of Terry and Paula Ellis of Chipley. She is active
in the First Baptist Church of Chipley where she serves in the nursery and
volunteers for missions.
Chipola English instructor Pam Rentz is faculty adviser to the college chapter
of Phi Theta Kappa.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE to Speak at CHIPOLA Commencement
MARIANNA—Representative Marti Coley will deliver the
commencement address at the Chipola College’s graduation ceremony on Thursday,
May 6.
Coley is a native of Blountstown who graduated from
Chipola in 1981. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m., in the
Milton H. Johnson Health Center. Parents, relatives and friends are invited to a
reception immediately following the ceremony.
More than 300 graduates make up the Chipola class of 2010. They will join the
ranks of more than 10,000 Chipola alumni. Counted as members of the class are
all who completed their degrees or certificates from December of 2009 to May of
2010 or who will complete work during the summer 2010 terms. Chipola’s first
class of bachelor’s degree graduates in Nursing, Elementary Education and
Exceptional Student Education also will receive their degrees during the
ceremony.
Rep. Marti Coley, the former Marti Bontrager, has been a long-time resident of
Jackson County. She graduated from Chipola Junior College in 1981.
She then went on to graduate from Florida State University in 1984 with a degree
in English Education.
Coley began her teaching career in Thomasville, Georgia, before moving to
Marianna in 1985 with her husband, David. She began teaching at Malone
High School where she remained until 1989. In 1989 Coley moved to the
college level and has been with Chipola College for over twenty years.
Rep. Coley has championed many pressing issues facing local communities,
including: affordable housing, education, and economic development.
Currently, she serves as the Chair of the Joint Administration Procedures
Committee, the Vice Chair of the Education Policy Council, and is a member of
the Pre-K-12 Appropriations Committee, Pre-K-12 Policy Committee, and the Select
Committee on Seminole Indian Compact Review.
Rep. Marti Coley was married to the late Rep. David Coley for 23 years until his
death in March of 2005. They have three children: Kristin, Vance,
and Hunter.
She was first elected to the
Florida House of Representatives in 2005.

PLACE INDIANS HAVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
MARIANNA—Chipola baseball player Eric Sauls is this week’s FCCAA Baseball Player
of the Week for April 20.
The sophomore outfielder from Tallahassee batted .348 (8-for-23) with three home
runs and nine RBIs in five games for the Indians.
Sauls hit safely in his final four games of the week. He scored at least one run
in all five games and enjoyed a three-game stretch in which he drove in eight
runs.
In a three-game series against top-ranked Gulf Coast, he went 7-for-15 with two
homers and six RBIs, including 4-for-7 in game one when he drove in the
game-winning run in Chipola’s 14-13, ten-inning victory.
Gulf Coast (15-4) has clinched the Panhandle Conference title. Chipola (11-10)
has a good hold on second place in the league ahead of Pensacola (8-11),
Northwest (8-11) and TCC (8-14).
Gulf Coast is the top-ranked team in the state poll. Chipola is next highest
Panhandle team at seventh place. PJC is tenth.
Chipola outlasted Gulf Coast 10-9 on April 16 behind the pitching of CJ
Riefenhauser. Aaron Etchison was 2 for 5, with 4
RBI. The Indians lost a 4-3 decision to Gulf Coast on
April 17.

MARIANNA—Ten members of the conference champion Chipola College softball team
were named to the Panhandle All-Conference team.

CHIPOLA
SOFTBALL PLAYERS NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE
MARIANNA—Ten members of the conference champion Chipola College softball team
were named to the Panhandle All-Conference team.
With a current league record of 14-2, the Lady Indians have already secured a
spot in the FCCAA State Tournament.

MARIANNA—Some 460 students were
eligible for graduation at Chipola College at the end of the spring semester.
Graduation exercises are scheduled for Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m., in the
Milton Johnson Health Center.
State Rep. Marti Coley will
deliver the commencement address.
Coley is a native of Blountstown who graduated
from Chipola in 1981. Parents, relatives and friends are invited to a reception
immediately following the ceremony.

certificates from December of ‘09 to May of ‘10 or who will complete work at
Chipola during the summer of ’10.

CHIPOLA HOSTS Vernon
STUDENTS AT BLUE SPRINGS
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Ground Water Outreach Project recently hosted
Vernon Middle School students, principal
Chris Beard and teachers Stacy Abbott and
Lindsey Watson, on an Earth Day field trip to the Jackson
Blue Springs Park.
Park director Chuck Hatcher welcomed the group and was presented an award for
his outstanding service over the five-year Ground Water project which is funded
by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Dr. Santine Cuccio, Ground Water project director, said, “As students ran from
their school bus, parked on one of the highest points in the park, they saw for
the first time panoramic views of the Blue Spring from elevations of 40 feet and
sniffed the pine laden spring air. They dipped their feet in the 67 degree
water; and hiked the new nature trail with Russell Williams, Springs
Ambassador.”
The students also visited karst features such as limestone bluffs, solution and
collapse (chimney) sinkholes. The natural bridge and animal niches in the
sinkholes were a source of interest, as were the sinkholes which held sparkling
spring water. Dotting the areas in between were trillium, blood root and
rain lilies.
Blue Springs Park surrounds the largest spring in the Apalachicola;
Chattahoochee Flint River Basin has been a magnet for people and wildlife for
12,000 years. With a flow of 122 million gallons of water per day, it
ranks 17 out of 33 first magnitude springs in Florida and 33 of 78 in the US.
The100 square mile basin surrounding the park which recharges the Florida
aquifer which feeds the spring is vulnerable to contamination.
Dr. Cuccio said, “The purpose of the field trips can be summarized in the words
of Baba Dioum given during a 1968 speech in New Delhi, India, at the
International Union for conservation of Nature: ‘In the end, we will conserve
only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will
understand only what we are taught.’”

UF PLANNING TO OFFER AG
ED DEGREE AT CHIPOLA

University of Florida and Chipola College are exploring the possibility of
offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education and
Communication on the Chipola Campus.
Plans are to begin the program in the Fall of 2011 pending a favorable needs
assessment survey and sufficient student interest. Anyone interested in the
program is requested to complete the survey found at

Chipola students can obtain their Associate in Arts Degree from Chipola College,
completing all prerequisites, and transfer immediately into the program.
Students in the program will be comprised of juniors and seniors and will be

CHIPOLA TO OFFER SMALL
BUSINESS SEMINARS
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer two small business seminars on Friday, May
7.
A webinar entitled, “Running a Profitable Company,” will meet from 9 a.m. to
noon. A seminar entitled, “Steps to Starting a Small Business,” will meet from 1
to 4 p.m.
Both seminars will meet in the Chipola College Business Building (M108).
The small business development seminars are a collaborative effort among Chipola
College, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the Small Business Development
Council, and the Jackson County Development Council.

MATHIS WINS NEAL AND KEEN
ATHLETIC AWARDS—Maggie Mathis of
Marianna, a member of the Chipola College Cross Country team, won both the Neal
Sportsmanship Award and the Charlton Keen Scholar Athlete Award at the college’s
recent Awards Night. Mathis was a two-time NJCAA Academic All-American. She will
graduate from Chipola in May and plans to attend Florida State University to
major in Communication Disorders. Cross Country coach Rance Massengill presented
the awards.

CHIPOLA PLAYS FRIDAY IN
STATE SOFTBALL TOURNEY
Auburndale, Fla.—The Chipola Lady
Indians will play South Florida, Friday, April 30, at 2 p.m., (EST) in the
Gulf District Bracket of the
2010 FCCAA/NJCAA Softball Tournament.
Win or lose, Chipola will play again Friday at 7 p.m. (EST).
Tournament games continue Saturday, May 1, with the championship set for Sunday,
May 2. Other teams in the Gulf bracket include: St. Petersburg, Tallahassee,
State College of Florida, Gulf Coast, Northwest Florida and Polk.
The
Atlantic District Bracket includes Santa Fe, Lake-Sumter, Brevard,
Seminole State, Miami Dade, Daytona State, Florida State College and Indian
River.
Chipola finished the regular season as Panhandle Conference Champions with a
14-2 league mark and a 42-11 overall record.
Fifth year Chipola coach Belinda Hendrix leads the Lady Indians with 10 players
from the Panhandle All-Conference team, including catcher Kellie Todd,
Conference Player of the Year, and Emma Stevenson, Conference Pitcher of the
Year.
The Lady Indians won the Panhandle Conference championship in 2008 and in 2007.
Chipola finished fifth in the 2009 State Tournament. The team captured the state
and national championships in 2007.

BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
LAKELAND—The Chipola Indians will make their sixth consecutive appearance in the
FCCAA State Baseball Tournament, May 6-10, at Tigertown Stadium in Lakeland.
Chipola faces Palm Beach in the opening round of the tournament, Thursday, May
6, at 10 a.m. (EST). A win will put the Indians in the 4 p.m. game on Friday. A

Johns River (Mid-Florida Runner-up), St. Petersburg (Suncoast Runner-up), Santa
Fe (Mid-Florida Champion) and State College of Florida (Suncoast Champion).
The Indians punched their postseason ticket April 24 by defeating the NW Florida
12-3 to secure the runner-up spot in the Panhandle Conference. Chipola
Baseball currently holds a 13-10 record in conference play and 25-22 overall.
“It was a big win for us to be able to clinch a spot in the state tournament,”
Chipola coach Jeff Johnson. “We just need to continue to improve and keep
getting better every day.”
The Indians combined an impressive hitting display with awesome pitching by
sophomore
Austin Wright, who allowed just one hit and four walks to earn his team-high
sixth victory of the season. Wright pitched eight innings while striking
out 11 batters.
Offensively the Indians benefited from home runs by
Eric Sauls and
Joey Rapp. Sauls drove in four runs while Rapp was 1-for-3 with two
runs and two RBIs.
LeVon Washington was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Andy Fermin also got into the action with three hits and a run.

FCCAA State Baseball Tournament, May 6-10, at Tigertown Stadium in Lakeland.

NAMED TO BASEBALL ALL CONFERENCE TEAM
MARIANNA—Five Chipola College Indians have been named to the All-Panhandle
Conference team.
Eric Sauls (OF), Blake
Newalu (INF) and Austin Wright (LHP) were named First Team All Conference. LeVon
Washington (OF) and CJ Reifenhauser (LHP) were named second team All Conference.
Sauls, Wright and Newalu also were named among Top 10 Players from Panhandle
