Twenty Fifth Annual
Mathematics Olympiad Brochure
The Mathematics Department of Chipola College is pleased to announce the Twenty Fifth Annual Chipola Mathematics Olympiad. The Olympiad, under the sponsorship of Chipola College, will be held Friday, April 10, 2009. In an attempt to recognize and promote mathematical achievement in our five county district, the Olympiad will only be open to the fifteen secondary schools in Liberty, Calhoun, Washington, Holmes, and Jackson Counties.
Registration
Sponsors should complete a preregistration form and returned it to
Chipola by Friday, March 20, 2009. When the team is on campus on Friday, April 10th, the sponsor will check in at the registration desk to confirm that the registration form is accurate or make any changes that may become necessary. Changes can be made prior to that date by calling Dr. Cavin (718-2382)or e-mailing her at cavinr@chipola.edu.Rules
In an effort to make the Olympiad as enjoyable and fair as possible, Chipola has formulated the following rules. Please examine the various rules as summarized below in order to determine which of your students can compete in the different
competitions.
1. In the Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II contests, a maximum number of three (3) students from each school will be
allowed to participate. A maximum of five (5) students may participate in the Trigonometry or Calculus contests. These two contests will be held at different times to allowstudents to participate in one or both of these examinations.
2. A participant in the Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II contest must be enrolled in that respective course during the academic year. A student is eligible to compete in the Trigonometry or Calculus contest if he or she is presently enrolled
in a mathematics course subsequent to Algebra II or Geometry.3. If a school is not offering a particular subject during the academic year, but offers that subject on a rotating basis,
the school can designate individuals from the last class offered in that subject to participate in that particular subject matter contest. A student may participate in each contest only one time.4. A student may register for more than one individual competition as long as it does not conflict with any of the other
rules.Teams
Teams for the overall written competition will consist of three (3) students chosen by the faculty sponsor and designated on
the pre-registration form. One student must be designated from each of the following contests: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. No person can represent more than one area on the same team. A maximum of one team per school will be allowed. The winner and runner-up of the team competition will be determined by the sum of the scores of the designated team members in each of the individual contests. A school is not required to enter a team to participate in the competition. The three students representing their respective schools in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II will compete as a team in the ciphering contest. A team may have fewer than three members.Composition of Exams
Each competition will consist of a timed, multiple choice exam lasting approximately one hour. The Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Calculus exams will measure the concepts learned in those respective courses.
Scoring
The student's individual exams will be graded in the following method: +1 for each correct answer. In the event of a tie in the number of correct answers in places three through ten, student winners will be decided on the basis of number of correct per least amount of time. However, where possible, duplicate place awards will be given for the same score. If a tie occurs between students in places one and two, the student who finishes first will be given the award.
Awards
All students will receive certificates of achievement for having been selected by their school to participate in the Olympiad. Trophies will be presented to the first and second place award winners. Medals of achievement will be awarded for the third through the tenth positions. Permanent awards will be given to the schools who finish first and second in the team competition. #9;Awards will also be given to the first and second place winners in the ciphering competition.
