Lady Indians Move to Within
One Game of Nationals
by Joc Calloway - Chipola Athletics
On Saturday, the Lady Indians had a three-part mission; play one game, win that one game, and get out of the heat. After Saturday’s game versus State College of Florida, Chipola was able to check yet another item off their to-do list and moved to within one victory from securing a berth into the NJCAA National Tournament.
In the sweltering south Florida heat, Chipola took down the previously undefeated in the tournament and impressive team of State College of Florida 7-4. Pitcher Brittany Black collected her third victory of the tournament in four innings of work while holding the opposition to five hits and two earned runs. Teammate Emma Stevenson finished the remainder three innings giving up six hits and two earned runs.
Offensively, the Lady Indians were led by Ariell van Hook and Andrea Sullivan. Hook boosted two hits, one run, one RBI, and a walk; while Sullivan added two hits, one run, and one walk.
Throughout the tournament, Chipola has struggled to hit the ball but in today’s game, Chipola collected eleven hits and five walks, while striking out only twice throughout the entire game.
Although the Lady Indians defeated State College of Florida today, they will face each other again tomorrow in the FCCAA Gulf District/NJCAA Region VIII Championship at 10:00am. After losing to Chipola earlier in the afternoon, State College of Florida defeated Tallahassee 6-4 to save them from elimination.
After tomorrow, Chipola hopes to once again be able to check another item off their to-do list.
