Lady Indians Defeat NW Florida

by Joc Calloway - Chipola Athletics

Coming into tonight’s games against the Lady Raiders of Northwest Florida, Chipola knew two things: 1) they had already won the Panhandle Conference Crown and 2) they would be heading to the state tournament later this month.  However, Coach Belinda Hendrix’s approach to the game was simple: stay focus and take care of today’s business.

“We wanted to come out and finish the conference season on a high note heading into the state tournament,” said Coach Hendrix.  “We didn’t want to take anything for granted today.”

In game one versus Northwest Florida, the Lady Indians displayed a potent combination of superior pitching and excellent defense in the field to defeat the Lady Raiders 7-0.

Chipola jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when pitcher, Brittany Black, doubled to deep right-center field to score Ariell van Hook, who was hit by a pitch, and Trish Bliss, who singled earlier.

The Lady Indians would add another run in the third as Brittany Black’s sacrifice fly to deep center allowed Michelle Hewett to trout home, pushing the score to 5-0.  Chipola would tack on another 2 runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, while scripting one of their best defensive performances all season.  In both the top of the first and second, the Lady Indians converted to crucial double plays to end the innings.

The winning pitcher, Brittany Black, went five innings while allowing the only three hits for the game. Black also helped her winning cause by leading the team in RBIs for the game, four.

In the night cap, the Lady Indians took control with a 4-0 lead through four innings before N.W. Florida was able to plate two runs in the top of the fifth.  The Lady Indians would hold steady throughout the remainder of the game to defeat the Lady Raiders by a 4-2 in their final Panhandle Conference game.

With the wins, the Lady Indians improve to 42-11 overall and 14-2 in conference play.  The Lady Indians will now head to the NJCAA Region VIII Tournament in Auburndale, FL for their first game on April 30th.

Although the Lady Indians are not sure who their first round opponent will be, one would be safe in assuming the game plan will involve staying focus and taking care of today’s business.
