Former Indians Led Dutch National Team
As Chipola Softball Coach Belinda Hendrix finalizes her 2009 recruiting class, she’s keeping one eye on the recruiting board and the other eye the happenings in Valencia, Spain.
This week, two former Lady Indians are taking part in the 16th annual ESF European Championships. Areke Spel and Karin Tuk, both key contributors on the 2007 National Championship team at Chipola, are teaming up again to take on the world.
Playing on the Dutch National Softball Team, Spel and Tuk are showing the world the grit and determination that won over countless fans during their time at Chipola College.
“It’s great to see our former players contributing on the international level. Areke and Karin were both instrumental parts of our success here at Chipola,” said Chipola coach Belinda Hendrix.
In the closing game of the second round of the European Championship this morning, Spel and Tuk’s team came from behind after trailing 5-0 in the sixth inning. The Dutch scored once in the sixth and then plated four runs in the final inning to claim a 6-5 victory over the Czech Republic.
The win keeps the Dutch National Team undefeated in tournament play and they will advance play Great Britain in the Semi-finals later today.
