Chipola Wins Home Opener
November 6, 2009
The Jake Headrick era at Chipola College began in a big way Friday night with a convincing 96-74 win over L.B. Wallace in the opening night of the Milton H. Johnson Classic.
The Indians were lead in scoring by Lashay Page, who poured in 26 points. Page connected on 7 three pointers in the game. Fellow guard Dexter Ellington also shined in his debut at Chipola by contributing 18 points.
Headrick’s team led 52-26 at halftime before a strong second half by L.B. Wallace sought to cut the deficit. Nevertheless, an Indian victory was never in question.
“Because we only had 8 players tonight, everybody played a lot of minutes,” said coach Headrick. “The second half showed our freshmen’s inexperience at times. We have to continue to improve each day if we want to achieve our goals this year.”
Chipola was limited to 8 players because of injuries but hopes to have the full squad back in practice later this week as they prep for their first road trip of the season.
"Next weekend, we play 4 games in 5 days on the road,” commented the Chipola coach. “This will be our first major test for this team.”
