November 18, 2009
Former Chipola Indian star JaMarcus Ellis, who was the NJCAA National Player of the Year, was selected in the third round of the 2009 NBA D-League Draft by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Ellis, who transferred to Indiana University upon graduating from Chipola, last played for NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma City.
During his tenure at Chipola, Ellis helped the Indians to a 62-7 record and a NJCAA National Tournament Runner-Up finish in 2007.
Also in 2007, Ellis was named as a first-team All-American and Florida Community College and Panhandle Conference MVP, while averaging 17,1 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists.
During his high school days at Chicago Westinghouse, Ellis was named Player of the Year in the Chicago Public League in 2004 and was the #2 ranked prospect in the Illinois Class of 2004.
Ellis is the second Indian to be drafted in the NBA D-League in three years. In 2007, Mike Taylor was drafted by the Idaho Stampede. Taylor would play 39 games for the Stampede before being drafted in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft by the Portland Trailblazers.
