Chipola Preps for Final Four Games Before Conference Play
The time is upon them.
Although the Chipola Men’s Basketball team has four more games before the official start of the 2010 Panhandle Conference season, the feeling is in the air.
“As soon as the New Year begins, our total focus is on developing as a team and fine tuning our skills that will prepare us to be competitive during conference play,” said head coach Jake Headrick.
The 11-1 Indians will play four games in four days as they gear up for the conference season. Chipola will play the first two games as part of the Gulf Coast C.C. Holiday Classic; Monday versus Georgia Perimeter College and Tuesday versus Northwest Mississippi College. Both games are slated for a 2:00pm tip.
For the final two games of their four game road swing, the Indians will travel to Pensacola to participate in the Collegiate Sports Shootout at Pensacola Junior College. Chipola will play USC-Salkehatchie at 5:00pm on Wednesday and Albany Tech at 2:30pm on Thursday.
After losing to nationally-ranked Howard College during the Thanksgiving holiday, Chipola has responded offensively by averaging 93 points per game. However, if the Indians look to make an impressive mark in conference play and secure a spot at this year’s state tournament, they will have to improve on other aspects of their game.
“Defensive we have to improve as a team,” commented coach Headrick. “During conference play, it’s critical that we play within our game plan each night and execute both offensively and defensively each and every possession.”Chipola will host their first Panhandle Conference on Saturday, January 9th as the Commodores from Gulf Coast travel to Marianna. This will mark the teams’ first match-up since last year’s competitive Region VIII Championship game in which Chipola defeated Gulf Coast by the final score 98-95 to secure a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament.
