Assistant Coach
Brent Shelton is currently in his fourth season under head coach Jeff
Johnson at Chipola. Shelton serves as recruiting coordinator,
coordinating administrative duties and works with the hitters and
infielders.
Shelton has coached 23 position players, in his four years at
Chipola that have played at four-year universities and
nine position players
that have signed
professional baseball contracts. Victor Alvarez in 2003, Cole
Armstrong in 2003, Tyler Flowers (second-team NJCAA All-American) in
2006, Steve Clevenger in 2006, Rene Tosoni in 2006, Ryan Chaffee in
2007 and 2008, Carlos Moncrief in 2008, Moises Montero in 2008, and
Chris Berroa in 2008.
Shelton moved into the collegiate coaching ranks in 2003 as an
assistant at Chipola for one year. At Chipola he was responsible for
the administrative activities, worked with the hitters and coached
first base. Shelton re-joined the Chipola staff during the 2006
season, where he helped the Indians to an appearance in the FCCAA
State Tournament during that season. Shelton also was an
assistant on the Indians' 2007 and 2008 FCCAA State Championship and NJCAA
National Championship Team during the 2007 season.
Upon graduation, Shelton entered the coaching profession as an
assistant at P.K. Yonge Lab School in Gainesville, Fla. While
working with one of the top high school baseball programs in Florida
for one season, he coached 2 players that are currently playing
minor league baseball, Flint Wipke (Angels), and Ryne Malone (Cubs).
He then moved back home to Liberty County High School in Bristol,
Fla., where he spent a year as an assistant in baseball and
football. During the 2004-05 seasons, Shelton served has the head
baseball coach at Sneads HS in Sneads, FL, compiling a 25-24 record
during two seasons and taking the Pirates to their 3rd state
tournament appearance in the school’s history.
Shelton also spent eight summers as a head coach of SWAT and the
Panhandle Indians where he has coached 17 college players and one
player who signed a professional contract: Travis Anderson (FSU), Jon Dortch (Mercer), Adam Gordon (Florida
A&M),
Logan Willis (CFCC), Dayne Read (Chipola), Matt Gannon (Chipola),
Taye Larry (Gulf Coast), Eric Sauls (Santa Fe), Kurt Lewis (North Florida), Matt Creamer (Lynn
College), Bryant Elkins (North Florida CC), Andrew Gay (Chipola),
Melvin Ray (Los Angeles Dodgers), Kevin McCoy (Chipola), Rex Wade (Gordon College), John Travis
(Wallace-Dothan), Hunter Park (Gulf Coast), Matt Miller (Tallahassee
CC), Sean Bierman (Lurleen B. Wallace), Bill Carpenter (Rollins), and David
Travis (Chipola).
