Chipola Offers State Approved Educator Preparation Institute

Chipola College is an approved Florida Department of Education Educator Preparation Institute (EPI).  The Educator Preparation Institute is a program for college graduates with a bachelor’s degree, who want to earn credentials to become a Florida certified teacher.  The course of study, which can be completed in as little as a year, offers certification in all areas.

Students must complete 15 semester hours of coursework, as well as demonstrate the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs).  Enrollees must pass all three Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (General Knowledge, Subject Area, and the Professional Education) during the program. Those who successfully complete the program will receive a Professional Teaching Certification from the Florida Department of Education.  Potential EPI participants should first apply for a Status of Eligibility at http://www.fldoe.org/edcert/step2.asp.

If your Bachelor's Degree is not in a content area, such as Biology, History, Math, English, etc., then you should go to the following link and select an area that you are qualified to teach (http://www.fldoe.org/edcert/subjlist.asp).  Since the Educator Preparation Institute does not provide coursework to pass Subject Area Examinations, you are strongly advised to register, take, and pass a Subject Area Exam before beginning the EPI curriculum.

A person with a Bachelor's degree that passes one of these subject area examinations is eligible for a temporary teaching certificate that is valid for three years from the first date of employment in a K-12 school setting.  With this temporary teaching certificate, you may seek employment before or during completion of the EPI coursework.  The 15 semester hours of EPI coursework will assist the participant in knowledge of the competencies needed to pass the FTCE Professional Examination.  The coursework is not designed to assist with the Subject Area Exam content or the competencies needed to pass the third FTCE examination, the General Knowledge Test.

In addition to the Educator Preparation Institute for students already holding a bachelor’s degree, Chipola awards bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics Education (6–12), Biology Education (6–12), Middle Grades Mathematics Education (5–9), Middle Grades Science Education (5–9), Elementary Education (K-6), Exceptional Student Education (K-12), and English Education (6-12).
